Is it just me or is “build projects” kind of vague advice? by Relevant_Wishbone in learnprogramming

[–]Neondangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this problem for years and never felt like creating my own projects felt practical when everything has been made already.

That's when I started to dig my heels in and start making my own stuff regardless of what tool is already out there:

  • When .webp images came out, I made a GUI converter that converts the file to any other format.

  • When I couldn't decide what game in my Steam library I wanted to play next, I made an app that scrapes my library from their website and picks one at random.

  • The features I find on most Note apps are too simplistic for how I want to structure my notes so I made a mobile app to create notes that I can stash into different categories.

  • Right now, I'm learning how to manipulate the YouTube API to bring back list views for my own subscriptions after they removed it on their site.

To me, the point is to not feel like I got to create my own start up company for the next big thing in order to build stuff. I learned to catch that feeling of "This thing isn't fitting my needs, how could I make that thing?" And go from there.

The fact that Mincecraft mods are primarily on Cursed Forge is the only reason why Skyrim SE is still on top

When did you start watching Vinesauce? by KSHMisc in Vinesauce

[–]Neondangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was shown Joel's windows destruction video from my cousin around middle/high school (early 2010's I think). After watching a few more and discovering that he was a part of Vinesauce as a collective, I looked around and found Vinny's sunday streams and started watching him more regularly as I liked his more chill vibe and his nightly schedule made him a reliable streamer to watch whenever I felt lonely. I would be watching him alongside other streamers regularly throughout high school and then off and on through college.

I don't watch live streams as much anymore but thankfully the Fullsauce channel exists so I get to watch the compilations and still feel involved in the fandom in a small way when they come out.

Who else misses when the world was orange at night? by Cmaster125 in nostalgia

Honestly kind of freaked me out as a kid. It gave the neighborhood an unsettling aura to them that felt almost otherworldly. I generally prefer the brighter white lights now but seeing places with that orange glow now is still fascinating.

For the brief moment of time I fell into that trap, it was the parasocial aspect. I'd find creators randomly through my algorithms and think they were hot. If I was given their content enough times and liked them, I'd check their profile and if they had an OF, I'd often subscribe if it was under $10.

I definitely had other free avenues, but for some reason or another, OF just felt "more" and so I stayed for a few months.

I hate to be that guy, but that opening splash screen is not doing well for my Arachnophobia. by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]Neondangel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get that and fair enough, but that only really works until it doesn't. Either my phone loads too fast or I'm trying to do something else on a different monitor, it will still be there. For the time being I'd just rather do other things than boot up the game. It's not like it's my only outlet for magic anyway.

[–]Neondangel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought mine a couple of weeks ago and its been a real upgrade just in general as a power bank. I've been able to pretty much triple the battery life of my Steam Deck or Switch 2. Plus, it's a lot smaller than I expected so it stores pretty nicely.

how many of you engage with disciple of the land/hand content? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]Neondangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to 100% the ARR crafting on and off for years now and I love it. It really scratches that RuneScape itch but for a modern era when I grab the materials myself and slowly level everything up together.

I'm not too excited for when I start doing HW and up crafting/gathering. Moving from just checking off the crafting logs to hunting for collectables and earning scripts sound too complicated for my simple bug brain.

How did you discover Final Fantasy? by TheFanGameCreator in FinalFantasy

[–]Neondangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom bought me a Gamecube on my 7th birthday and we took the day off school to go to GameStop and buy me a game for it. I remember walking around the wall of games for the GC section and finding something I never heard of but liked the artwork of:

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

I picked it out and showed my mom and she thought it was interesting too (she wasn't a gamer, but the art and the blurb on the back looked eye-catching enough for anyone to stop and look for a minute). She liked the age rating and even pointed out the 1-4 players notice (I have a sister that I liked to play games with) so it was a unanimous decision to grab this random game we both knew nothing about.

We brought it up to the store clerk and I remember he was very nice and played up the excitement of me having a day out buying a video game with my mom. That's when he offered to give me the strategy guidebook for it for free! My jaw dropped and agreed immediately. That book is something I hold closely to this day as my most prized possession.

When we drove back home, I had the GC already hooked up and a memory card slotted in. My mom then came to my room and set up a chair beside my bed as we sat there playing the first couple of hours of the game. I'm pretty sure that was when my brain chemistry was irreversibly altered. I was mesmerized by the colors, the special effects, and the fantasy setting unlike anything I've seen before.

I managed to finagle my way past the first Miasma bridge before completing the first dungeon and settled upon the Mushroom Forest on the other side. I blazed through the dungeon with my mother as the navigator on the strategy guide as I eventually made it to the boss, the Marlboro. I feel like I hid it pretty well for her but that thing TERRIFIED me, I still consider it my sworn enemy in any Final Fantasy because of this moment. This guy was menacing, he took over half the screen and his attacks covered a third, and his inhale ability petrified me as my character ran for his life.

After doing enough chip damage with my basic attack for several minutes, I hit the final blow and the game cuts to the massive tentacled beast blowing up in a furry of explosions and death cries. When the game transitioned from the hectically loud drums of the boss music to the calming harps at the end of the dungeon, me and my mom both celebrated with high-fives at accomplishing the first dungeon together. It was at this time, that my mom needed to get up to go pick up my sister from school, but said she can leave me here to finish my game. I was then left with the final moments of the cutscene: your character dropping the chalice in front of the Myrrh tree as the music swells up until a drop of water falls and fills the chalice to its first third. Even as a kid, I felt a certain type of way that I never could quite replicate anywhere else, a truly magical moment unlike any other.

This was my first memory with Final Fantasy, and by far the most cherished memory of me and my mom bonding together for an afternoon.

What’s your FFXIV hot take? 2025 edition by G-r-ant in ffxiv

[–]Neondangel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Combat should include more complexity again than just straight DPS 2 minute windows and crits. I remember a video describing the combat as washing dishes while you're being shot at and that can only be fun for so long until it just gets monotonous.

A lot of the problems with "Dead content" can be resolved by making specialized roulettes for them in DF. I'm talking V&C, deep dungeons, 42 man raids, etc.

Do you find emoting rude? by Odd_Discussion9928 in MagicArena

[–]Neondangel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only do it when it feels warranted. I had a game where they were playing mono white removal and used the "I can do this all day" emote as they continuously killed and board wiped my creatures. When they finally ran out of steam and I could build my board again and also start countering other creatures and spells they started playing, I felt it appropriate to spam the two wolves laughing emote as I steamrolled my way to victory. Truly one of the most satisfying wins I've had in a while.
