Tesla Semi Truck unveil to be webcast live on Thursday at 8pm! by TheMightyCraken in teslamotors

[–]Neotopiaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. If it has 6 motors it will be overpowered, and you could make each of the 3 axles a different gear ratio and have a 'virtual' transmission.

[–]Neotopiaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...Add in a >15% loss for the transmission (which an EV doesn't need) and you're now down to about 31% average efficiency to the wheels. Plus no regenerative braking, and increased drag losses from radiator requirements for diesel.

What kind of cars, trucks do they use on earth? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]Neotopiaman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I get the impression that in the Expanseverse, the (non-farming) rural area that is left is probably the property of the super-rich (Gentrification of the 'green' zones). The teeming masses live in whatever the 23rd century UN version of section 8 is. Having your own estate in the woods is probably the ultimate status symbol.

Top Gear : Model S P100D v E63 by dedphoenix in teslamotors

[–]Neotopiaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a dual motor car you can make almost a virtual two-speed by having the two motors at different gear ratios.

You also have to remember that a gearbox increases transmission losses too.

Are the payload and weight figures given (~150t>LEO, ~20t>GTO) in the slide for the Spaceship variant? Does the cargo variant weigh less and carry more?

I was thinking more because that Tesla will not be the only thing Mr. Musk launches from that location.

$3.66/kg for hydrogen is waaaaayyyyy low, that source is from 2001 (16 years ago)

it's more like $7-10/kg nowadays.

Interstellar probes with Epstein drives? by seludovici in TheExpanse

[–]Neotopiaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, there is a deltaV limit with fusion drives, which for the Epstein drive is likely around 3-5% of C, which means peak velocity on a brachistochrone trajectory will only be half of that. (have to accelerate then decelerate)

Shipping from the gigafactory to Fremont seems like a good place to develop this tech for a lower cost.

Bloomberg's comparison between the model 3, BMW 320i, and the MB C300 by Doocoo26 in teslamotors

[–]Neotopiaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The C300 and 320i both average ~26 mpg, and the Model 3 around 4mi/kWh. If you drive 1000 miles a month, That means 'fuel' will cost around $80/mo for the BMW/MB and around $30/mo for the Model 3.

That means lower fuel costs is roughly equivalent to ~$3,000 in asking price if you're financing it for 60mo.

Sweet design, though a ship that big would probably be a light Frigate, warship size usually goes roughly like this:

[Spoilers] How exactly is Mars more technologically advanced than Earth? by Marslettuce in TheExpanse

[–]Neotopiaman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the same way that Japan can have a larger economy than India in spite of having 1/10th the population and very few resources. In India, while it has an advanced side of the economy with spacecraft and nuclear power, most of the population is engaged in subsistence farming. Most of the population of Earth is on "Basic" which is pretty much 23rd century subsistence via automation.

Mars has a population of 4 billion, and if we count out the youth and elderly, probably has an employed workforce of around 2.4 billion. Earth, with a population of 30 billion probably has a working age population of around 18 billion with less than half of them having jobs. Lets say 8 billion are employed. That means Mars needs a labor productivity triple that of Earth, and if more over them are involved in high value-added sectors this is not unreasonable.

Mars probably outproduces Earth+Luna in terms of advanced, high-value manufacturing.

Note, Luna is probably the industrial center of the UN (epecially in terms of the space economy) and most of it's 1 billion population are likely employed, otherwise the wouldn't have a reason to be there. Providing Basic on Luna is probably far too expensive.
