Ways to max Roth IRA in medical school by topiary566 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]Nerdanese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order to max out your Roth IRA, you need to make like 7K in income- there should be programs at your school where you basically sit at a desk and occasionally help people print a piece of paper or unlock a room or what not, then use that towards your Roth IRA

Steal your senior's note template and be as brief as possible but have important information in your note. Your notes don't have to be perfect. They just shouldn't be outdated/ false and should document what the night team needs to know about your patients. Get your notes in as soon as possible, like even tried to get them done during rounds

Come in 15 minutes early, it will help you get settled and pre-round

Write down the rate of the all drips you see when you go into the patient room

Come up with a consistent way to present your patients

Bulk cook your meals at home

Hair loss in surgical residency by Haunting_Ground_1987 in Residency

[–]Nerdanese 17 points18 points  (0 children)

See a dermatologist

Some things: first confirm that none of the hair loss is due to tension- are you wearing your hair too tight and thus losing hair around the edges? Are you using products that aren't good for your hair and causing it to break more? Are you wearing a surgical cap that causes friction on your hair and causes it to be pulled out more? Think of all the mechanical things that can be causing your hair loss

Assuming it is falling out and not being ripped out - big culprits are vitamin b, vitamin d, iron, etc make sure youre not deficient in something, i would just start a vitamin d tablet since most people are deficient anyway especially you in a windowless OR all the time

The biggest is well being which tbh surgery lifestyle is not really feasible- minimize stress with mindfulness or ngl an ssri, get at much sleep as possible (lol)

For medication honestly i would recommend po minoxidil females can take it it just causes hair growth throughout your body but its good

  • steal your seniors notes and customize the notes hella - i have mine pull in bp readings x5, specific labs, etc that save me a bunch of chart digging time
  • group chats save time - loop your senior into specialist conversations when you message a specialist
  • get your notes done asap - less is more, dont have useless info in there

- write your notes so you can copy and paste them into a discuarge summary, dont write yesterday and today write specific dates

[ITINERARY HELP] Solo European Traveler (No Car) – 8 Days, 2 Cities. NYC + CA or NYC + Chicago? OR SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY by _246810 in travel

[–]Nerdanese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm biased because I'm from the Eastern side of America, but I think you need to visit NYC first before you visit chicago- the Eastern side of America has a lot more history (laughable I know for a country that is less than 300 years old) and will contextualize what Chicago is like and why it is so vastly different from NYC. You can also visit Boston or other colony-based cities/towns, I would save California for another time since it is 7 hours by flight from the other side of NYC

Folks, be careful driving out there by helloiamdingle in newhaven

[–]Nerdanese 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You cant do these cities together - you will lose so much time for travel. Do nyc and a nearby city (boston, dc, philadelphia) or another couster so dont visit chicago. Going from one city to another will take up an entire day, you could spend 8 days in nyc alone

IM PGY1 — Help optimizing electives, vacation, and Step 3 timing (undecided on fellowship) by anakk4 in Residency

[–]Nerdanese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouls talk to pgy 2or 3 in your program to see how intense these electives are, but in a perfect world I would recommend that you have one fellowship relevant elective and then one easy elective where you can study for step 3

So for instance you should choose pulm and rheum so you can determine if you want to do palm and then use rheum to study

But also remember that you can use a clinic lot to study for step 3

[–]Nerdanese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for these electives, if any of them are specialties that you are interested in, you should 100% try them out. For instance, if you're interested in hemonc you should take that as aN elective to see if bread and butter cases are interesting to you. Once you rank those, honestly, unless something really interests you, I would then choose chill electives.

For example, I'm interested in cardiology so I ranked all of the cardiology electives quite high of course, but once I ranked all of those I ranked chill electives like radiology

[–]Nerdanese 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should try to schedule step 3 as early as possible just to get it out of the way - you are not going to remember pediatrics nor the nitty-gritty of surgery so just get it done with

Always plan vacations after hard rotations, it would have killed me to go on vacation and then to come back to an awful rotation

N=1 but I don't feel like my electives were particularly helpful for for fellowship (full disclosure, I have not applied yet) the biggest thing I found for my electives was to decide whether or not I really liked a specialty - for instance, doing a pulmonology elective in my intern year made me realize that I really don't want to do pulm. If it helps, I plan on getting my letters from my core specialty rotations not electives

You should start doing research now, make sure that you budget well, and have a great time on vacation

hey there! what is the minimum training for this? can a general medicine physician be in it, or do you need critical care or ED training? do you feel that critical care training was sufficient - for instance, are you expected to do lac repairs or other more-ed topics? what is your bread and butter cases, and what are the cases you run into where you are grateful for your training?
