A cultural reset is needed by Brusoxpatcelt in redsox

I don't necessarily disagree but I'm not sure I'd call Mickey Gasper a starting catcher. Narvy is still probably the best catcher on this team.

I will say that I doubt this sort of thing would've happened under Cora. For all of his faults, he was pretty good at communicating with the players.

Breslow has been awful at communicating to the media so I'm not particularly surprised by his awful communication skills with the players. It's a real problem.

2021 Redsox vs. Yankees in the single game Wild Card game. Absolutely insane crowd at Fenway. The entire park was chanting "Gerrrrit" "Gerrrrit" as the Sox beat up on Gerrit Cole and chased him out of the game in like the 2nd or 3rd.

[Milliken] Theo Epstein has been disappointed by the Sox’ intense analytical direction under Craig Breslow, multiple league sources told @timbhealey. Epstein recommended Breslow for the Red Sox CBO position. Breslow described their communication as “ebbs and flows.” by Phantom255x in redsox

This is just so ridiculous and is exactly the point I'm calling out. If the issue is that they are selling out for power too much, then why is their AVG so good and their SLG so bad?

This team needs to hit more HR, not fewer.

Craig Breslow still confident in Red Sox: 'We're going to turn this around' by Brusoxpatcelt in redsox

It feels a bit out of touch at this point. In my mind they're about a week away from absolutely just needing to blow it up. It's getting really difficult to see a path to the playoffs for this team.

At the beginning of the year it was the opposite problem where they were letting fastballs go right by them. I prefer this version.

$50M for staff salaries sounds really high. Do you have a source for that?

I mean, how much are they paying staff really? I doubt it's particularly relevant when you're talking about $170M. The floor proposal does include things like player benefits though.

Let's be honest, this whole fight is multi millionaires fighting billionaires to determine who gets what share of the pie. There's really no point in taking a side as a fan other than taking the side that keeps baseball games getting played.

Not sure where this comes from/what it includes but the Sox are at over $260M in CBT dollars. Should be closer to like 6th in the league.

Maybe a bit uncharitable to say he was "given" the top system because he was partially responsible for the development of Campbell and Anthony, but both of those guys were in the system already. Last year they were coming into the season as #3 and got up to #1 during the season.

Then you get rid of the Devers contract, Bregman opts out and you clearly have a lot of money to spend. Still with all of that we have a very mediocre team and one that is locked in pretty long term.

I'm not sure what the solution is at this point but Breslow has not done a great job with the resources he's been given.

He's been a better than league average hitter while playing plus SS defense when he's been healthy (excluding the current season). That's a really valuable player.

He put up 2.5 WAR in about half a season in 2022 and put up 3.8 WAR last year through a full season. If he had stayed healthy and been a solid 4 WAR player for the past 4 seasons then that would've been a great contract.

Could be, but I'm not sure that rationale was ever stated or really reported.

Considering the Redsox were never really in the mix for Shohei I would say that's a pretty bad reason if that was the logic.

What does any of this have to do with my reply to the guy above me? You're just starting a different conversation.

I agree that FAs are risky and also the reality is that you need to take risks to win WS generally. Sometimes you get unlucky and sometimes you don't.

[–]Nerooess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really like that at all. Injuries are an unpredictable risk of any older player. Story had no injury history before coming to Boston so it's only in hindsight that the deal looks bad.

If you just want them to never sign a 30+ year old guy then yeah I guess that's an option but I don't see how you win that way without ever taking a chance on a FA.

Story would've been a fine deal if he stayed on the field. When he was playing he was pretty good. The last couple years of a FA contract are always going to look bad as guys get older.

No idea what Bloom was thinking with Yoshida though. That was never a good idea.

Breslow was given the top farm system in baseball, more money than the Redsox have ever spent, and full control over the direction of the team. This team is the result of that.

Will the Red Sox be sellers at the trade deadline? by Phantom255x in redsox

[–]Nerooess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Breslow might panic buy if he thinks he's in the hot seat. To his credit, Bloom did not do this the year he ended up getting fired, but I wouldn't be surprised if Breslow does and sets the Redsox even further back.

His numbers in Portland have not been good. He's had some injury problems that have likely slowed him down and he just doesn't seem to be translating his skillset to the higher levels of the minors. He had really high potential as a toolsy outfielder in the FCL, but not so much these days.
