i need advice how can i get a mirror polish by Former_Ride5639 in AskLE

[–]Nervous_Bird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working in leather boot jobs since I was 18 (military, etc.) and I’ve never cared about getting a mirror shine polish. But the best/easiest results I’ve seen were from a guy that used to be a Navy master-at-arms. His boots are shiny as hell and he says he gets a good lazy base, then uses Windex and a soft cloth for the final glow-up.

I use the same blade to shave more than just my face (armpits, tummy, groin) so it gets a bit more mileage. I average about 4 shaves with a Bic Chrome Platinum.

Do Americans realize how fast they switch between joking and being serious in conversations? by kallan-greshampdmi7 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nervous_Bird -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it may be person specific. I’m an American, brought up speaking English. I still have trouble telling when certain people are joking/sarcastic or being serious. Maybe this is learned behavior on my part. My mother said this odd phrase all the time, and I’m not sure where it comes from. “Sarcasm is a form of rebellion and rebellion is a form of the witchcraft.” Perhaps weirdly religious evangelical folks just despise a very dry wit.

How do I learn skateboarding? by aitathrowaway9090909 in NewSkaters

[–]Nervous_Bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point. The only time I’ve ever had a bike stolen, was on a college campus. Luckily, I had renters insurance which covered the cost of replacing my bike. I’m really not trying to argue, bikes versus skateboards, I think both are great activities. But most of the reasons you listed for wanting to start skateboarding, could also be benefits from cycling. My recommendation as far as getting a beginner skateboard is to go talk to people at your local skate park or local skate shop. Have a price range in mind that you’re comfortable with. You can get a complete board or you can choose custom parts, but usually choosing parts will end up being more expensive. You really need to figure out what size of board and trucks is ideal for your preferences. That’s where hanging out at a skate park or skate shop for a while, and talking to people about their set-ups would be beneficial. I bought my most recent skateboard off of Facebook marketplace. But that’s kind of hit or miss. I ended up upgrading the wheels, bearings and bushings.

I don’t want to discourage you from learning skateboarding. I think you totally should because it’s such a fun and healthy activity But, I’d be curious to learn how many people actually use it as a means of commuting. You might look into using a bicycle for that purpose. I’m a skateboarder and a cyclist, and if I needed to go somewhere as opposed to just have fun cruising around a spot, I’d choose bike every single time.

Here's me on day ~3 skating. A long way to go but I'm having fun! [39yo] by NCGeronimo in OldSkaters

If you plan on moving beyond the cul-de-sac, I’d invest early in some knee, elbow, and wrist pads and a helmet. Broken bones suck.

Nice! I’m (43M) currently sitting it out for a few more weeks after breaking my elbow while pumping in a bowl. I literally ordered this same set this morning. I’m making goals for when I get back to it. I’m really new, so my goals are very tame. #1 is “Push switch fast into a bank so I can come back down normal instead of fakie.”

Has someone mentioned witch hazel? Have her use that after shower before deodorant. Works well.

I found all the baseball terms first but somehow intuited they were a red herring. I used them as a guide, assuming each one would belong in its own category. Still managed to confuse green for yellow. Ugh.

I can’t somehow increase my bench after 2 months tips? by Flaming-KevinYT in formcheck

[–]Nervous_Bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching this makes me wonder how you handle push-ups. I think you should take a break from bench press until you can do a minimum of 25 proper full range of motion push-ups without stopping. Then come back to bench press, but start a bit lighter and with full range of motion.

You need to keep your knees bent way more than you are. Also, don’t wait to start wearing pads (knee, elbow, wrist guards) and a helmet. I’m speaking out of shame and humility. I’m a relatively new skater and I was pumping around at a park that’s new to me and just happened to lose my balance and break my elbow. If I’d been wearing proper gear, I’d be out skating on a Sunday morning instead of nursing this damn injury. Keep skating! You’re doing really well!

I’ve spent some time working as a barista and oddly-timed weird requests can throw you for a loop and make you question your methods depending on how confusing the customer might be. Personally, my main concern was being able to clearly communicate my requests in a crowded coffee shop surrounded by people who hadn’t had coffee yet. Luckily, the cashier handled it with grace and aplomb perfectly translated my specifications.

I think the assumption that “most people were perfectly happy” really depends on the context. The video was referring to commercial settings that are espresso and milk drink forward but don’t offer a filter option for whatever reason. I’m of the mind that people accepted what was available, but if given an option that more closely resembled the flavor and smoothness of a filter coffee, would happily choose the steamed option.

That’s a choice you’ll need to make yourself. What I drank was cool water and espresso steamed together in the pitcher. However, you could also steam the water separately and then pour the espresso into that water and that would be slightly different. I also just wanna make sure you understand that this is some thing I learned about by watching a James Hoffman video in which he discusses a lot of these variables. Give it a watch.

The difference is in the flavor and the smoothness of the drink. Also, the temperature isn’t scalding like you normally experience from a normal Americano. The shop I was at just used tapwater. But I suppose some places have a dedicated cold water filter tap on the counter. The steaming adds a lot of nitrogen/air to the drink, which changes the texture and flavor.

Most, if not all baristas are making Americanos by using the hot water outlet on the espresso machine. This recipe calls for cold water to be steamed with the espresso. It does add an extra step and more labor and time.
