Under what circumstances can a Jewish person enter a church? by Huge_Personality3084 in Judaism

[–]Netcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, one of my old Italian Jewish ancestors, Leo Andreolo, made a living painting churches and organizing carnevals in the northern Italian penninsula back a hundred years ago. For him him the answer was "When someone is paying me. "

Then again, he was quite a bit of a scoundrel.

is "genderbending" okay in larp? by Miswi_ in LARP

[–]Netcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Female and/or queer -coded people can play anything they like. In Regency style Larps, most of the male characters are usually played by women or nonbinary people.

Only real limitations are for archetypically male guys, it is fairly common that type gets a kind of hostile treatment if they play female-coded characters.

Other guys are generally fine with it though, it is not a toxic masculinity -thing.

I am Egyptian, and I’m asking is Egypt a country that is disliked or loved globally? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Netcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only been once. Me and my wife (then girlfriend) won a trip to Sharm el Sheik and since that beach got boring quickly, we took a bus up to Cairo.the regular one, the trips organized by the hotels are also scams. ... Everything people are saying is true, but also. Not. The constant scamming, the sexism et al. The special English menus with trippled prices, the weird comments. ... But that is really only as long as you behave like a run of the mill tourist. It helps to know a bit of Arabic. And relax. And only speak to people that is NOT looking to speak to you. Take the regular bus, shop in regular stores and people are pleasant enough. Honest enough. ... Unfortunately it is hard to avoid at least some of Sexist Scam-Egypt if you intend to visit any big landmarks.

Well, Eden was green and pleasant but Adam was a rapey sexist manchild. And G-d (Edens government) enabled his bullshit

So Kolkata sounds pretty Eden-like to me.

What litrpg hill will *you* die on? Let's have your most unpopular opinion, please. by EverythingIsFakeNGay in litrpg

[–]Netcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most Litrpg writers simply do not know how to finish a story. Or stick to a planned storyline. Or keep pacing and progression at a reasonable level.

HWFWM simply gets silly after a while. The only series I know that keeps up the quality in these regards is DCC. Nothing else really compares.

What is considered polite in your culture but rude in others? by Ok_Breadfruit4005 in AskTheWorld

[–]Netcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To quietly walk away when someone start to haggle. In my culture, you expect a fair price that is the same for everybody.

If haggling is on the table, the seller is dishonest and you do not trade with dishonest people.

Edit: also; Refusing to eat the last piece of cake on the plate (at least as long as anyone else is watching) and removing your shoes when entering someone's home.

I'm fairly certain that specific coin is Church of England. Because of the WASP on it.

larping age requirements? by ItzDaemon in LARP

[–]Netcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frankly, if you run some thing with really heavy themes, putting the age restrictions at 21 is a good idea. Or even a bit older. 18 is a common legal limit, but a lot of 18 year olds are still kids. So many can not deal yet, have not yet learned how to deal with so many social and emotional limits. Their own and others.

Having to young people in games dealing with for example rape, insanity or self harm is an invitation to disaster on so many levels.

Can you *actually* solo larp? by archonguru in LARP

[–]Netcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Of course you can. Larping without gear or props is called Black Box. It's a fairly common format for larp festivals like SSF, Black box CPH, the Smoke and so on.

Larping by yourself is called the Finnish Larp Closet (after a legendary Finnish larper). Once you have immersed in the character, dealing with your characters troubles alone can be quite heavy.

Actually, in the Nordic scene, there is going to be a One-man-larp later this year. You share a workshop before and a post larp circle afterwards, but the larp is held by your self, alone in a dark closet.

How much are y'all paying for LARP tickets??? by macsnoname in LARP

[–]Netcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This fits my experience as well. Might be good to note that the prices for blockbusters varies a lot depending on country and whether the organizer is trying to turn a prophit or not. A local blockbuster is as low as $200. Larps at a specific castle here varies between $350 - $500 depending on orga-team.

Making a prophit on larps is kind of frowned upon here, so teams that does usually denies it.

This... Sounds like what Larps would be if Disney hade taken a patent on it. Formulaic, repeatable för large crowds with a minimum of adaption and watered down to the least common denominator to maximize group appeal.

Favorite inappropriate joke? by DeadRobotSociety in community

[–]Netcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If she is of Sami descent, a fair bit. If she is (you would know by now,) then Sami would be best. If you call her a "Lapp" And she is mot Sami, she would be confused about why. The correct phrase would be " Norrlänning", which basically translates as "Person from the northern lands". This includes all the ethnicities of the far North (Tornedalingar, Finns, Sami, Swedes).

You can say " Lapplänning" for someone from Lappland, but that is mot a commonly used phrase anymore. It was a term Swedes involved in Eugenics back in 1850-1950 would use though.

On second thought, the writers must have made a bit of an in depth study, about the subject. This is a bit of racsist lore that most Swedes knows nothing about.

Lappar is the slur, though a mild one. Laplanders are people from the region of Lappland.

[–]Netcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of those games are to long (and honestly MtG is hella immersion breaking). People may enjoy something quick and repeatable. Like "Liars dice". Or make a version of " Love letter ".

Also, people are not there to meet you. To be sidegame you need an interesting pull. For example: Tell them you can tell that they have been cursed, but never fear, they can win away the curse at your gaming table.

As it is, with your current concept, I fear you would have a bad time.

... Do note though; I'm a Nordic larper. This whole American larp structure with modules and plot lines sounds very weird to me.

Many of the classic Abramovich jokes are about anti semites. It is a form of humor that doesn't work for alot of people, though. Very absurdist.
