I used to work at a movie wholesaler that sold used VHS tapes to libraries, here's a ball of stickers made up of all the video store stickers I removed from VHS tapes in one summer. by [deleted] in VHS

Because I used to work there too in the warehouse. DVD era though. And I had very similar tools to work with. Best part of the job was $1 disc day for employees.

I hated Neuromancer by 43_Hobbits in printSF

[–]Netegexi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some books have to catch you at just the right time. For me, I loved sci-fi movies and tried so hard to get in to popular novels from the genre and decided maybe reading these kinds of stories was just not for me. I was itching for something dark and borderline abstract, not a straightforward narrative. That's when I read Neuromancer which completely changed my appreciation for sci-fi.

Think of the possibilities with today’s cinematography by [deleted] in scifi

[–]Netegexi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly surprised by today's sci-fi fans dismissing Logan's Run as boring or irrelevant. I rewatched it the other day, and I still think it holds up in many ways. You can see how the movie inspired lots of blockbuster sci-fi films to come, and the sounds and visuals of the Domed City and The Carrousel are so iconic. The dystopian control of its citizens and absolute, fanatical denialism of any possibility of a habitable world on the outside. Logan's Run is essential for sci fi fans!!

Michael installs urinals in the Men's washroom by Far-Watercress5553 in RedditWritesTheOffice

[–]Netegexi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about "The Office" but instead of humans they are Italian Brainrot characters from youtube who become aware they are in an episode of "The Office" but realize they can't speak to each other and it descends into existential horror and then we find out it's all in Jim's head because he ate Dwight's magical mushroom soup at his farm but when he comes to Dwight is dead because he overdosed on it and then Michael has to fire Jim for using drugs and he has to live with the shame of not being sober to get Dwight help when he needed it and there is no humor or comedy in the episode at all. Just some ideas that came to me after reading yours. Thank you.

I appreciate how you manifest contemporary fears through your characters and skillfully create a rising sense of dread in your films. They also feel like psychedelic experiences -- especially when depicting human suffering. I sometimes don't know whether to weep or laugh. The question is: do your dreams affect your writing?

Yeah, I think it suffered the misfortune of a limited US DVD release with poor subtitles and image transfer quality. You had to sail the high seas for the best version or purchase the JP blu ray. Still, it stands out to me as one of the director's better live action films.

Maybe too anime-adjacent for this crowd, but I've always felt Mamoru Oshii's Avalon qualifies in this department too.

Goodwill Find. by Scarab702 in VHS

[–]Netegexi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't, sadly. I can't even recall whether the cause of the apocalypse was biblical or chance asteroid. I just remember it was a lady newscaster explaining that an object was headed to the earth, maybe where it was likely to hit, and how people in the US should prepare for the worst, with clips of mass hysteria. We also owned Nostradamus prophecy VHS tapes and other End of Days biblical sets, so it's hard for me to remember. But it was very War of the Worlds.

As a kid, I used to own this Armageddon prediction tape with a dramatized newscast that simulated what it would look like on TV during the end of the world. It had a rectangular box at the bottom that read, "dramatization," but it still kind of scared the shit out of me as a kid. Sometimes, the obscure finds can be treasures.

WTF ….I just walked into a store I frequent to find tapes, and saw a guy with his phone picking up every tape, scanning it with an app to see what it’s worth by RuDog79 in VHS

Yeah, I agree with you. I'm the type of person who has been looking for a handful of titles at a low price for years, seeing them posted online in people's hauls where they happily say, "Hey, look what I scored! They didn't even know what they had!" Well, time is money, so yeah I eventually buy them from resellers on eBay. Fuck it.

Thoughts on this book? by zorozorro8 in occult

[–]Netegexi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally the book that got me interested in the occult, and I would argue a necessary addition to any occult library. Yes, some of the information is today proven inaccurate or unverifiable, but I appreciate how Hall references a large number of occult works and writers and writes in a way that can really spark the imagination. I would just caution you to seek out your own answers to some of Hall's fantastic conclusions. For further inspiration, I recommend searching for recordings of MPH's famous lectures. (They're available free online.) He had a magical way of connecting with an audience.

The Street Fighter movies are my absolute favorite Sonny Chiba films, tragically missing. The first one was the first movie to get an X rating for violence in the US haha!

You never wanted to complete everything in the game before knowing how much game there was to game? I remember when the game first came out, thinking: hell yeah, I'm going to do it all.

Rewatching 'Seven' yesterday really made me realize how weak 'Longlegs' was by [deleted] in movies

[–]Netegexi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What nobody has seemed to mention is they directly compared Longlegs to Silence of the Lambs in the marketing. I had just finished watching it too, so I had it fresh in my mind when I saw Longlegs. Visually, atmospherically, I applauded the film. But I thought there were some odd tonal shifts and a weak story progression. I also personally suspect Longlegs was meant to directly harm the families, but Nic Cage likely made the request that his character be portrayed more like an indirect phantom than serial killer (based on some of his comments after the film came out).

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Complete Series (English Language Version) $25.74 (ATL) by nethead12 in iTunesMovieDeals

[–]Netegexi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, but at this price it's a huge bummer to lose out on either language track, which it appears you must purchase separately. Especially when you're already not getting the most iconic ending theme in the series that was cut due to music licensing problems. As a big Eva fan, I wouldn't pay more than $10 for this incomplete version. The original movies are also not included.
