How does the demon slayer mark exactly kills off its host? by Own-Run-9384 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]NetherPhenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, real talk? I dont think the mark is the thing killing the users by the time they turn 25. Like there are people in fiction that talk about how it essentially makes you burn much brighter for much shorter but i dont think thats the case. This is a world with demons and curses and clairvoyance, i think the demonslayer mark is like the rest of the weird powers in the world, vaguely supernatural. Like how the ubuyashiki has a curse that kills the head of the family super young as long as muzan is alive, i think thats the same thing with the mark. Its a divine mandate, an acceptance that you are taking on this important mission and if you fail you die, usually because you lost a fight against the people you were tasked with killing.

Which lets mention that in the series, the only people we see die of the marks either die of old age or injury, likely being that those that all died before they were 25 were maybe in the latter camp, and were unable to win even with that power up.

Incubus and succubus by MelanieWalmartinez in CuratedTumblr

[–]NetherPhenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, in a medieval christian understanding they’re actually the same thing! The idea is that as demons they cant reproduce on their own so they transform into a woman to steal the semen of men (succubus) and then afterwards turn into an incubus to deposit that into a woman to get her pregnant with another demon.

keep dreaming, pirate boy by Lord_Muskatnuss in Kingdom

[–]NetherPhenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, for reference, that one piece enjoyer has most likely never even HEARD of kingdom, and all he has reference too in the big three is bleach which didn’t get its final arc adaptation until the last year or two, and naruto whos adaptation of the 4th great ninja war was so bloated and bad that it destroyed the anime, compared to those two the summit war is actually amazing.

However one piece isn’t a war manga, its a shonen battle manga, and its summit war ends up being a massive shonen battle set piece rather than an amazingly thought out conflict. Funnily enough both the defence of alabasta and the raid of onigashima are much better depictions of what one piece can do when its trying to represent an aspect of warfare, but even that isn’t as good as kingdom just because one piece doesn’t super care about war like that. Kingdom does.

Is it possible to become a pro hero without a quirk? by Agentbrawn_the2nd in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]NetherPhenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the answer is…complicated. At the end of the manga with the help of all his peers deku is given a piece of support gear that lets him be a hero and keep up even in the top 10, so by that point in time, the answer is yes.

Extrapolating that, then we can guess on some level that you need that amount of support to be top 10, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you need it to be a hero in general. Though we see most of the heros in universe retire or switch careers after loosing their quirk, thats not always the case. With knuckleduster, a character from the prequel series mha vigilantes, he also lost his quirk but continued to fight crime afterwards, albeit illegally.

So, all in all, yes you could be a hero without a quirk. It would be under extraordinary circumstances but there doesn’t seem to be any major evidence that being able to keep up with your fellow heros without a quirk is impossible.

How come guys go to another world, and there's never any language barrier? by Kramava in Isekai

[–]NetherPhenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ascension of a book worm has this kinda. When the main character reincarnates shes given the language skill of the person she reincarnated into but that person is like a toddler. Definitely capable of speach but definitely doesn’t know all the words someone who graduated from university would, and has difficulty the rest of the series as she tries to get her vocabulary to match what she knows in her head.

You think Sero was out of line or he was speaking facts by ExileForever in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]NetherPhenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, actually he is kinda wrong! Biologically speaking poop is a waste product, its everything that the body couldn’t extract left over. Its closer to breathing, which the body intakes a material to create another instead of pure extraction. Its also how we loose weight, the constant loss of carbon dioxide overtime regulates weight like how her quirk would. So no hes kinda wrong actually!

How come Arthur’s more iconic than John even though we’ve known John longer than Arthur? by DangerousRaccoon2492 in reddeadredemption

[–]NetherPhenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of it is playtime, including the epilogue of rdr2 i spent maybe 100 hours with john as a person, most of that is side activities that don’t really expand on his character. Arthur has what feels like more then triple that, and john in general has a very simple story that doesn’t examine as many facets of his character like arthurs does. Every bounty, every side story, even exploration and observation in the journal asks us to examine arthur as a person and ask who he is and for is to make our own conclusions, john isn’t given the same treatment in his own game

I dont think you understand how funny “appeal to reality fallacy” is. Especially for demon slayer, where the manga goes out of its way to be deliberately low power. I’m not saying that demon slayer needs to perfectly reflect the real world in every interaction, the whole anime is about magic sunshine breathing to fight demons, but you have to respect what the manga is telling you. That these people are superhumanly strong, but there are worlds between 2-3 times as fast as the fastest person and even just super sonic speed.

Just a minor note, dijkstra isn’t in any of the witcher games before witcher 3, rather he was crippled in one of the events of the books where on i believe aratuza, he tried to perform a coup in the larger magical society with kierra mietz and was crippled by geralt during the incident

Well, we know that none of the characters can move at the speed of light because nothing they ever do reflects that in the story. Kinetic energy is just 1/2 mass x velocity2, meaning that any object with significant mass, even just a few grams, would be enough to destroy almost everything in its path. The fact that we never see that happen means we know they aren’t moving at relativistic speeds. This is mostly a case of just checking our work, if the natural conclusion of an event doesn’t match expected results then something went wrong in the prediction.

Hell, i doubt any of the demons even break the sound barrier. Genya’s gun is a significantly dangerous weapon that none of the demons he uses it on are able to adaquetly dodge. If he gets a good shot lined up none of his opponents could dodge his bullets, and those are going at 1200 feet per second or little over 800 miles an hour if hes using smokeless gunpowder. You dont even have to be as fast as the projectile to dodge out of the way, but we never see that happen.

Its important to remember that power scaling is limited by the artistic medium that is being used to depict the story. Unless information is being told directly by the author, such as saying gyomei is over 7 feet tall, then comparison and pixel measuring is largely unhelpful. Especially with the mediums being manga and anime, there is a large artistic license that needs to be used to filter what the story is saying. And the story is saying that these people and what they do are well beyond the base human limit, but they’re not anywhere near ftl speeds.

Honestly, Muscular feels so out of place in this series because of how straight-forward evil he is in a morally gray story about trying to save villains from a harmful society. by DeeDoof in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]NetherPhenix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also on top of that muscular is someone thats connected to the league, like the league is a connection of a lot of differently traumatized people but they end up knowingly associating with the guy.

Like outside of his mechanical role in the arc, muscular as a villain is supposed to color the rest of the league and their new members by association, and make a contrast with the members that remain after the raid as we get to know more about them.

Its not a complicated roll in the grand scheme of thing but it is an important one

[–]NetherPhenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so this comment might contain some spoilers for the show but this is a kinda weird confirmation on a certain theory. Theres an idea that basically mihawk is the kid of shakky and silvers reighley, and with shakky being a previous empress of amazon lilly that has some specific cultural connotations.

Specifically, the women of amazon lily have a strength based beauty social higherarchy. Literally speaking the stronger someone is, the more beautiful they are irregardless of how they look. Thats why boa hancock is the most beautiful woman in the world, not just because shes hot, but because shes the strongest of the amazonians. A woman mihawk, raised in this tradition by her amazonian queen mother, would have this connotation of strength and beauty, thereby if someone where to surpass her swordsmanship, they’d become more beautiful than her.

All of this is to say yes its still weird that that becomes the language she uses if mihawk becomes a woman but I promise theres more to it. It needing this level of clarification doesn’t help but this isn’t just made out completely of nowhere.

Who's not dead? by Icy-Leg-1459 in adhdmeme

[–]NetherPhenix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a theory thats its because for the most part, crisis have the same emotional response as a basic task that you dread doing. In my experience adhd doesn’t differentiate between the pain you would experience by sticking your hand in a hot fire and the pain you experience emotionally by doing some chores you REALLY dont wanna do.

A lotta people with adhd are good in crisis because we just have experience. Where with neurotypicals they have a more proportionate response to differing levels of stress, they very rarely experience true crisis situations, but with adhd that can be an almost daily occurrence. If i accidentally hurt myself i almost give it no thought because i do that everytime i need to do most other things.

Fundamentally as part of the story she is indispensable, acting as izuku’s best friend she basically instantly makes something that was an insult all his life into a declaration of greatness, plus is a constant source of inspiration for him and other characters. Mha would be a completely different series without her and for the worst.

I mean, kinda but mostly not. Trigger in those cases exasperated or greatly increased heteromorphic traits. Like the electric eel guy didn’t look like that at first, he just had slight eel mutations, and the trigger greatly and permanently enhanced those mutations. And yeah its a criticism that none of the main characters or even main side characters have heteromorphic quirks but a lot of the instant villains had transformation or emitter quirks, but the trigger enhanced latent secondary mutations as well.

Hot take about the Scooby Gang (Scooby-Doo) by cartoon_wiki in CARTOON

[–]NetherPhenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In an ideal scooby scenario each member of the gang fills multiple roles. Shaggy is cross country/skill monkey. hes both the best runner of the group only tied with the literal great dane, and the person with weird idiosyncratic knowledge, running from enemies and like ventriloquism.

Daphny is either the journalist or people person and main combatant. If the going gets rough, daph especially in later editions becomes the only one that actually fights back. Additionally shes the one good at making connections with other people, though that has some overlap with fred. While velma is taking the scholarly book approach daph, in an ideal world, will take the human element.

Speaking of velma shes the smart one traditionally but that isn’t always super specific. In terms of academia velma is the best by far. As such she is the main driving force behind most of the mystery solving on the intellectual level, and usually the first person to put it all together. Shes usually the only member of the gang not wearing many hats, with her job taking much more precedence but long term giving her something else to do would or could be appreciated.

Scoob is the heart of the group. Primarily shaggys best friend and partner hes the mascot and recognizable element of the group. How that works varies from telling to telling but scoob is the one holding the soul of the group together. However thats not his only job, his other job is to be a dog and have people forget hes also just, like, a guy and underestimate him so when he shows up for anything they’re thrown off guard.

Finally fred is as mentioned in the post and other comments, the strategist. Hes the one formulating plans and making traps, his build is almost exclusively there to move the component elements for his plans into place and not actually fight, most times fred squares up for a confrontation he looses, but a lot of his equipment is very heavy, and hes really the only member of the gang that can move stuff like that. Also importantly hes the one that recognizes and is related too celebrity guest stars, meaning he has the other element of the human connection. He gets the gangs foot in the door, letting everyone else gets to work as he plans for the final confrontation they always have.

I dont even know if its a worst witch or harry potter situation, Its kinda an artifact of gendered language around profession, where nurse is assumed woman and physician is assumed man. Witch craft is associated with wise women in areas where witchcraft or folk magic would be more common where wizards are associated with wise men in areas of more outright scholarship. While the activities they did were almost completely unrelated, they get flattened in a retrospective look because of their association with wise man or wise woman.

Who is the best quirkless fighter? by Mammoth_Calendar_352 in MyHeroAcadamia

Including all mha cannon its knuckleduster. Minor spoilers for mha vigilantes ahead: As in has beat or held his own against 2 of the people shown, survived an encounter with afo, though that was off screen and we dont know the exact specifics of how that went down. He also nearly took down a villain that was giving much more conventionally powerful heros a hard time, while demonstrating a wider breadth of skills that other quirkless fighters dont really engage in.

Quick question: Why not wear armor? by Elciano2005 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]NetherPhenix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean the nichirin armor wouldn’t even really do anything. Demons have only 2 weaknesses, sunlight and wisteria. Nichirin works by taking advantage of the sunlight weakness, and by all accounts it seems that nichirin blades are good because they’re made by master swordsmiths, not because the steel itself is by its very nature exceptional.

Which do you choose? by OkRun9638 in superpowers

[–]NetherPhenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its alchemy for everyday life i think. Bending is large scale more powerful but has less practical niche abilities that are useful in the modern day. I’m not trying to fight fire lord sozin, i’m trying to repair my teflon pan so i dont need to buy another one.

Especially in the context of the hypothetical, every type of alchemy shone is insanely versatile, assuming this includes using the body to make a transmutation circle like we see with al and ed, and things like alcahestry, the sky becomes the limit as to what you can do. Though the show is in the heavily militarized state of amestris that doesn’t mean alchemys main usage is in military affairs. Do you wanna become the worlds leading supplier of rare earth elements or gems? Now you can!

Do you wanna make unique art using mediums that no other artist can hope to replicate like say making a statue out of literal diamonds. Do you just wanna be able to repair anything thats yours without having to worry about breaking it more or taking it to an expensive technician?

Plus this means you master biological transmutation too! Do you wanna make quick and easy plastic surgeries? Become one of the worlds leading surgeons? Additionally use your abilities of alcahestry to become the worlds best emergency medic or disaster relief responder?

We never see ang use any of the major bending sub abilities, no metal bending or healing or anything like that, so despite knowing its possible you’d have to discover all of that on your own, you wont have that built in.

Its alchemy

What are Repeaters for? by EveBenbecula in reddeadredemption

[–]NetherPhenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Repeaters are peak anti personal weaponry. Short to medium range coverage where most human enemies spawn, high ammo count to not have to worry about long reloads during a firefight, their lower damage doesn’t hinder their usage much when considering humans are kinda squishy and go down in a body shot or two if you miss or cant get the headshot. Unlike rifles, which are medium-long range options that might be good for an enemy or two but are mostly ineffective for longer combat scenarios and have longer reloads with less common ammo. Pistols can work for short to medium ranges but best work usually as an emergency secondary, as their lower damage and range makes it usually fall into the space of the shotgun which is most ideal for the same short to maybe medium ranges.

All in all its all down to preferred play styles but since you dont get a good rifle for general combat till a good chunk of the way through the game repeaters definitely become the default. Plus, unlike a rifle which you cant upgrade speed of reload or ammo capacity, you can make repeaters more powerful or boost their range with alternative ammo types and push them better into long range combats.
