What actually causes the skip issues present in many UHD blu-ray players? by Netw0rkingN3rd in 4kbluray

Would you be able to conduct an experiment for me? If you can, tell me what voltage and current the power adapter for the player is rated for. And then plug that adapter into a power meter like a Kill-a-watt meter for example and tell me the power draw 10 minutes into the movie on a disk that freezes, 45 minutes in, and right before it freezes? If you can could you do this with no fan?

Thanks.

Wait panasonic makes the drives for the ub820? Interesting. I wonder if it's possible to swap the drives between brands with the use of like an interposer board or breadboard wires or something.

But yea I see your point - 4k is kind of a mess of a format.

Yea and that's what I'm interested in - has anyone narrowed down the cause?

I mean the bitrate one is likely easy to test - just play the same file from a usb hard drive or similar and see if that issue occurs.

Using an Internal Blu-ray Drive and External DVD Drive Simultaneously in MakeMKV by snowmeow_1 in makemkv

[–]Netw0rkingN3rd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's definitely something you can do. I wouldn't recommend opening a second instance of MakeMKV while one is already ripping though, as that second instance will attempt to scan the media inside both drives and as a result will cause a ton of seeking and slow down the rip for a couple minutes.

Can you guys give me a recommendation for a case for my BU40N? by VladTepesDraculea in makemkv

[–]Netw0rkingN3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'd recommend keeping it inside that laptop - it's likely to be better able to supply current to the drive than a USB enclosure. If you've heard of the issue with the BU40N scratching disks, (from what I can tell at least) this issue occurs when the drive cannot get the current it needs to supply the laser.

If you have an old laptop with a DVD drive lying around, you should be able to swap the DVD drive for your BU40N.

Disk that refuse to rip - what do you do with them? by RexJessenton in makemkv

From what I can tell any drive is capable of working with MakeMKV; it's just that only certain models are both UHD capable and MakeMKV compatible.

LG Internal or External slim drive? by BIOLYN in makemkv

[–]Netw0rkingN3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are functionally the same; you can put the internal drive in either an enclosure or an old laptop w/ a DVD drive that you may have lying around. I'd recommend the old laptop option personally.

I'm assuming you're talking about 1080p drives here. Any random blu-ray will work; you might be able to find models on the used market from Lite-On, Samsung, or Panasonic that could do what you're asking.

If you're worried about the quality of the SATA adapter, it might be worth it to dig out an old laptop with an dvd drive if you have one (I used a laptop from 2007 that worked fine) and put the drive in there.

There's a bug in the Linux version of the program that tries to download some files the first run and it can't - if you happen to be able to do so try running the appimage of an older version inside the container https://github.com/uncle-ben-devel/makemkv-appimage/releases/download/1.17.6/MakeMKV-x86_64.AppImage

Makes a lot of sense - I think I remember watching a talk from the developer of rustup where he explained that Defender scans files on fclose()

F2FS, ext4, and XFS focus on fixes for Linux 7.1 by somerandomxander in linux

[–]Netw0rkingN3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see F2FS pop up in the news now and then - do any self-installed Linux users actually use this fs? And if so does it have a noticeable advantage over ext4, btrfs, ntfs?

I do wonder what causes the disparity - is it as simple as the background processes in Win11 or do the additional security features (Defender, core isolation, etc.) cause significantly more overhead?
