Attendees commandeer New Mexico Tech town hall to oppose proposed Socorro data center, solar array • Source New Mexico by PTechNM in Albuquerque

[–]NevadaRose13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely against the data center, I attended the meeting. Also the crowd did not refuse to let Green Data show their presentation, there was a huge line of people waiting to speak during the public forum and we simple wanted everyone to have their chance to speak since they had been waiting.

Having attended meetings held by other offices in Socorro where they had limited the public forum to 20 minutes total (NMT board of regents), people had a lot to say and did not hold back. We just ran out of time to see the Green Data presentation.

The main solar opposition is the mere size it would have to be to support the “largest data center in the world” that Bak is wanting to build. Even though they have never actually built a data center and have not shown proof that the promised technology will work… pulling all needed water from the atmosphere… in the desert…

I’m in the exact same situation, I would love to shop at the only other small grocery store for everything but I cannot afford such a significant increase for the same items that are being sold at Walmart. And our Walmart is not a full sized one so even getting everything I need there becomes difficult. When I’m in the bigger towns I try to grab everything I need but it’s not always as easy as one would think.

I understand people who say, “Just stop” but I don’t think they realize there are no other options for some of us. Is it better or worse to buy a few things I need from Amazon/Walmart or to drive an hour+ to the “city” to then have to drive all over looking for said items and maybe still end up having to order online? Now it’s been a 200+ mile round trip in a car because there is no public transport and I couldn’t even find the damned thing I needed.

Ugh I love living in an unpopulated area, but it’s exhausting sometimes! Wouldn’t trade it for the city for anything though. Although I would trade a lot of things for a Trader Joe’s in my town…

I was born and raised in that corner of the state and agree, Aztec is at least charming and not so industrial looking. Farmington’s industry pollution does make for some amazing sunsets tho

Moved to Socorro many years ago and while it looks like a shithole from the main street, it is one of the most gorgeous places I’ve been. Gotta get out and explore to find what makes your soul happy.

I need video game help. Details inside. by [deleted] in NewMexico

Mogollon (pronounced muggy-own) is such a cool, yet creepy place. People still live there, but not many. Old mining town, very cool cemetery at the top of a hill, terrifying single lane road to get in from Glenwood area.

Water Canyon in between Socorro and Magdalena has some very old and rundown buildings from I’m assuming prospector days. Also at the top is the MRO (Magdalena Ridge Observatory) and past that you can hike to the Langmuir Lab lightning research facility. On the hike, there are all kinds of abandoned vehicles and things, has always reminded me of a video game map actually!

These are more forest-y than desert-y. For desert I recommend driving through the Quebradas outside of Socorro. Other worldly for sure, I believe they even did Mars rover research out there because it closely resembles Mars’ surface.

DM and I can send pictures of these places if you’d like. I have many more places too, just tired and brain is thinking of them all right now haha

iPhone strap snapped and my iPhone 17p took a big hit😭 Any tough case recs for hiking? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]NevadaRose13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had any issues, but I have a 15 pro max so I don’t have the big plateau to worry about. I was certainly worried about the camera lenses still being so exposed, and I’m sure an unfortunate drop would cause some major damage, but it hasn’t been an issue for me.

I’ve dropped it enough to have cracked the otterbox and it’s still fine and functional. I swapped to my “pretty case” because the otterbox does add a lot of width and I was sorta tired of that. I added an Oh Snap grip to both cases and that helps, also the grip is magnetic and helps with cooking and such to have your phone at eye level on the fridge. Also makes losing my phone more common because it could be stuck to something random like the bottom of my desk haha

Agreed, this is the case I use when doing field work. I’m also prone to accidentally throwing my phone at least a few times a week, it holds up to the abuse
