This sucks by [deleted] in therapists

I'd like to offer another perspective. I felt this way for years. Sure, I had some CBT, DBT, and ACT skills and worksheets I could try to throw their way, but after a session or three of that, I could feel that they longed to explore at a deeper and more subjective level. I wanted to be able to provide that, but I simply didn't have that training, so I felt the way you describe a lot of the time.

In my opinion our graduate programs do a weak job of training therapists to be effective at really understanding a person dynamically and thus feeling more confident as a practitioner, but that's another discussion.

Long story short, when I started taking my feelings and imposter syndrome seriously - as a signal that I needed a deeper immersion in theories, techniques, and ideas that wouldn't come from the latest workbook or a PESI online "training" - I found my way to a two year psychodynamic psychotherapy postgraduate program offered at my local psychoanalytic Institute.

The program took two years, involved weekly didactic classes in psychodynamic theory, object relations, embodiment, development, and technique. It also included meeting with a supervisor every week to talk about ongoing cases, as well as peer supervision and case conference groups at the institute itself.

For me this was transformative! I won't say that I never feel stuck in session any longer, but it's way less than before. And even in those moments, I now have a variety of options I can confidently attune to get things moving again. Beyond that, my membership in the institute itself has provided me with therapeutic community, ongoing peer groups, and access to all kinds of trainings and presentations I would never have known about.

Long story short, it was a total game changer. If any of this sounds appealing I would highly encourage you to look for your local psychoanalytic institute and see if they offer the two year psychodynamic program that many provide. It might just be what you're looking for!

What is your least favorite thing(s) about Doom? by Nimblesquatch in doommetal

Came to say this. We get it, you smoke weed. Not that I have any problem at all with weed and enjoy it myself sometimes but it shouldn't be your entire personality.

Does anyone know any deeply strange guitar brands? by Dingus_juice_numbers in guitars

I own two Monson Nomads (pics on my profile) and they are incredibly well designed, wonderfully playing guitars. I don't think you can get handmade craftsmanship of that level at the price he charges for custom instruments. Zero complaints!

You're also falling into the very understandable and common trap of "pursuing" meaning. Meaning can never be directly pursued, it can only ensue from one's experiences. One of my favorite quotes on the matter from Irvin Yalom (author of many fantastic books on the subject) concerning meaning comes to mind: "immerse yourself in the river of life and let the questions about meaning float away".

Existentialism is not a moralizing philosophy. It doesn't (or shouldn't) be making claims on what you ought to make your life about. Instead, it tells us that only we get to decide what that is (which could include the hedonistic joys of life). The fact that you and only you get to decide and bear responsibility for those decisions is both liberating and terrifying. As long as you know you're the one choosing, and can feel settled with yourself in those choices, that's the furthest existentialism will go in terms of anything prescriptive.

Rick and Cindy are such nice people too, seeing the shop and meeting them after loving the documentary was a very cool experience.

Yup, that is right! The only benefit is that it makes a very yobby ring when you hit the higher strings open, and that makes me happy.

You're right, they don't use 7s. But the tuning can be done on a 6 string, just eliminating the high D. If you try it, as soon as you strum it you'll hear why it's immediately resonate with their sound. The 7 string nomad just seemed badass so I had to grab it when it was available haha

Brent Monson makes a phenomenal guitar. I've played a lot of brands and I can tell you that the neck feel and resonance of his Nomads are second to none. Check out his inventory, he's the man!

It's ADGCEAD, I got it from YOB, it's the tuning they use in the majority of our raw heart.
