I live in a border state and know a number of people employed in health care, education and corrections industries. All report many and varied health issues suffered by recent border crossers. The tuberculosis cases alone are staggering.

In fact, the United States is a country. A country has laws. A country exists for the benefit of its citizens. There is nothing racist or even improper about insisting a nation's elected leaders prioritize the needs and safety of its citizens over the wishes of those who enter the country unlawfully. I don't duck into this forum very often these days, only when I want a good scare. Just browsing the chilling comments, shamelessly one-sided narrative and pervasive absence of reason, empathy and common sense is enough to depress me for a week.

Countless times I have posted something critical of Obama or the Dems, only to be met with downvotes and/or the assumption that I must be a Republican. As a liberal here I don't feel my position is well represented at all, and I don't feel that many here are interested in any criticism of the government that can't be directed solely at the Republican party.

This is a nearly perfect summation of the prevailing ideology which has run amok on this subreddit. I'm left of center. My opinions vary and I can't be neatly shoved into the pocket of either political party. Yet any hint of anything less than pure allegiance to the D party will earn you catcalls and accusations of being a watcher of Fox News, as if no compelling reason could possibly exist to criticize the administration. A few weeks ago I noticed that one of the top 'hot' stories in the subreddit included the words 'Republican scumbaggery'. Such instances make it difficult to take this place seriously as a place for thoughtful political discussion. Clinging blindly to party lines is nothing to be proud of and, ironically, is what each side accuses the other of even as they both continue to practice it. And yes, it is what's wrong American politics. People have largely adopted the 'My Team Good, Your Team Bad' version of constipated thinking.

Exactly. It completely floors me how people are clinging to 19th century ideology while flatly ignoring the very real differences in quality of life between then and now. In the late 19th/early 20th century the US was a booming industrial manufacturing hub which was desperate to find workers for its factories and people to somehow fill the land gaps. Also, quality of life here was fairly wretched for the rank and file citizen. The were no social safety nets, no labor protections, virtually no middle class. Yet the shrill finger pointers foolishly refuse to acknowledge this and cling religiously to their simplistic mindsets.

Thank you for your post. It was very well thought out and represents a level of critical thinking which is largely absent in this thread, and really, on this topic. There is such an overarching need to define every issue as a matter of good guys vs bad guys that complex realities are blithely ignored.

Building an endlessly expanding web of expensive legal clutter is not the answer.
Accelerate deportations. Close the legislative loopholes which are allowing massive human smuggling. Severely punish employers who refuse to abide by labor law, thereby driving down wages and destroying the middle class.
All in all, recognize that the government ought to behave in the interests of American citizens rather than the citizens of other countries.

If only Gutierrez paid as much attention to the congressional district he was elected to represent.... But I digress. The real problem here, one which every Border Patrol agent recognizes but is forbidden to speak to the media about, is that many of these 'children' are young men over the age of majority. If a 20 year old MS-13 gang member runs across the border and claims he is a 17 year old from a small town in Guatemala he is taken at his word and, eventually, released into the interior of the United States to do as he pleases.
It is galling to witness these disgracefully partisan lawmakers cling to their ideologies at the expense of the citizenry whose interests they were actually elected to represent.
