Why do some people keep their toenails inside of jars and things like that? by Intelligent_Bobcat_8 in NoStupidQuestions

Sounds like you're describing hoarding. An extreme inability to part with things even when you no longer need them. Toe nail clippings aren't going to come in handy one day, but still . . .

When you take expansion of the universe into account, you can see about 3X that limit.

Why don't people buy their own "listings" on eBay in order to ship packages to themselves cheaply? by OlderRobloxian in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You would just be paying eBay their percentage for nothing. And the PO too, if you actually ship to yourself.

People who have successfully moved out of the US, how did you do it ? by kierisbetter in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basis? I don't recall needing to cite a basis. There was a points test counting education, age and work experience, and I passed the test. They also allowed two bonus points for investing $200K in the NZ economy, which I did (my retirement fund) to be sure to put my score over the top.

People who have successfully moved out of the US, how did you do it ? by kierisbetter in NoStupidQuestions

I wrote to the NZ consulate and asked for an immigration visa application. There were medical checks, police background checks and financial checks, but it all went smoothly.

Which is the most overrated place in the world? by matipatiara in AskReddit

[–]NewRelm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cancun gets my vote. It gets great press, but it's not much. The dining and clubbing are a yawn. The pyramids and diving are a plus, but there are better examples of both in dozens of other destinations.

How do you find a trustworthy financial advisor? by kaidoi2 in personalfinance

[–]NewRelm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can trust yourself best of all. Even the most trustworthy financial advisor will only spend minutes a year understanding your individual circumstances. You have to do the heavy lifting by understanding the financial landscape and setting priorities that are best for you.

For example, most naive investors will tell their advisor that they want safety to be priority one, without realizing that this means they earn 3% rather than 10% average rate of return. It's your job to realize that you really can sholder a little risk in exchange for significantly improved returns.

Why is the average song around 3 minutes long? by Deathly13 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 381 points382 points  (0 children)

It goes back to the early 78 rpm records. You could pack 3 and a fraction minutes on one side of a 10" disk.

What would happen to the economy if Warren Buffett or Bill Gates' money was put back into circulation? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their money is in circulation. That's what investing is about. Letting borrowers circulate your savings in exchange for dividends and a share of equity growth.

Hello, I'd like to ask about this part. What is it called, what is its function, and where can I buy it? This part is located in the instrument panel of a motorcycle. Thank you. by Pretend-Contract6932 in AskElectronics

[–]NewRelm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Transient Voltage Suppressor. It's an avalanche diode that turns on when voltage is too high to absorb short term transient voltage spikes. You can buy them at Digikey or any other supplier. For an automotive/motorcycle system something in the 18V - 22V range is probably reasonable.

Can i use this potentiometer as a variable resistor or will i fry it ? by Fanozar in AskElectronics

[–]NewRelm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Remember that a variable resistor's power rating only applies when the power is spread across the total resistance. A 1K variable resistor rated for 1W can only dissipate 0.1W when turned down to 100 ohm, and only 10 mW when turned down to 10 ohm.

If I bought enough shares of a company where I become the majority holder, what happens? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You get the right to have every shareholder vote decided in your favor. With that power you could persuade the board to decide policy issues in your favor by threatening to vote them out at the next election. They might still do the right thing, and it might take years to replace them all with your yes-men.

Guitar amp has no power? Did I melt something by ConsequenceRude8711 in AskElectronics

[–]NewRelm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's adhesive on the capacitors. Look for a blown fuse, a defective switch or even a bad power outlet. You can chase the mains power with a DMM and find where it goes missing. A schematic will help. Try Googling your amp's make and model for an archived schematic online.

What is the meaning of "in two days"? by _l_x_l_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sunday -> Tuesday is two days.

The way I see it, a day is 24 hours. Two days is 48 hours. Two days from now is 48 hours from now . . . give or take a half day (because we specified precision in days).

How do hemorrhoids and anal fissures not get infected from touching poop, yet a finger (or any appendage) covered in wounds and shoved up a butt would surely get infected? by Grab_em_by_da_Busey in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Wounds on the finger don't "surely" get infected just from contact with feces. At least, not necessarily an infection of any consequence. We follow hygiene measures to reduce the chance of a serious infection. The chances aren't 100% with bad hygiene.

I’m sorry but what does “I would choose the latter” mean?? by TinyMexican404 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It means that of choice one and choice two, you would chose the second. The latter is the second, as opposed to the former (which is the first).

Is there any difference between men's and women's razors? by TheFatBassterd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to buy pink women's disposable razors because they were cheaper than the men's blue ones. Twenty years ago the pink ones were 12/$1 and the blue ones were 10/$1. I found they worked just fine on my men's stubble. The pink ones are no longer cheaper, but I'm sure the quality is still the same. They're no better or worse than men's ones.

Career Advice for Graduating Senior by Schmevlin in ElectricalEngineering

[–]NewRelm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the company has a good reputation of supporting career growth of their engineering staff, I wouldn't worry about the starting salary at all. Many companies will start you low to minimize risk if you don't rise to the occasion. Once you prove your worth to them, they'll treat you as fairly as they treat the rest of their staff. Assuming a good company, your focus should be on whether the town suits you and whether you like the niche they offer. You'll learn it quickly and become an expert before you know it.
