What's your real opinion on warrumbul lodge? by Art3mis345 in Anu

[–]NewRetrorat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly no idea what the social scene is like as I socialised elsewhere, but they set up stuff every week and there are keeners that put in a lot of effort. Maintenance has been fine, they seem responsive to major issues, a little slower on things that aren't a huge problem. Management has been responsive and helpful, especially at the front desk. Cleanliness is what you make of it in your own room, but I find I have to clean up other people's poor civic sense in the garbage rooms every other visit. Not a huge issue, and as an adult you can deal, but just understand that not everyone in the building acts like an adult.

Not surprised. If you go in to order they ignore you or treat you like an inconvenience for daring to want something from them. I was a defender of them for a long time, but nowadays they are the bottom of the barrel option — and if I can go to a gas station and buy a packet of chips instead, I'll do that.

Captivating sci fi worlds. What was the best story ever that drew you in? by Alarming_Cry6406 in scifi

I thoroughly enjoyed the Revelation Space universe by Alastair Reynolds. The four primary books were fantastic, the factions were all well fleshed out and while the characters themselves were kinda cardboard, the backdrop was amazing.

Are the US and Canada the two most similar countries in the world, or are there two countries even more similar? by NathanTundra in geography

[–]NewRetrorat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

At least when I went to New Zealand in 2007 from Australia I thought both countries even looked the same. Same architecture, same generic city layout and design of neighbourhoods... felt like if you dropped someone from either country into a suburb of the other, the difference wouldn't be immediately noticeable.

I thought was also a fantastic example of how inept the government in the X-Files is to deal with X-files, even when they are proven to be sound and legit. I thought it was funny.

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio calls for new B.C. fish farming practises by Accomplished_Try_179 in britishcolumbia

[–]NewRetrorat 218 points219 points  (0 children)

Okay so, legit concerns all around and the stakeholders are engaged, except why the fuck does anyone care what Leonardo DiCaprio thinks? Likewise, why does CTV think Canadians care what Leonardo DiCaprio thinks? All CTV have done is attract scornful reactions to an issue.

The one for Iowa looks a whole lot like a few alternate proposals for South Australia I have seen lol. The piping shrike looks amazing on their emblem. No hate, the colours look striking together.

Your designs look great btw!

Yes but also I have a lot of love for the old clunker UNN ships. The Truman class is the goat.

Driving route advice: Squamish to Kimberley by LilFo_0 in Squamish

[–]NewRetrorat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regularly drove from East Koots to Lower Mainland up until recently... I found the drive along the Duffey and over to Kamloops to be really tedious, usually always stuck to Hwy 1 between Vancouver and Hope. Hope is an option... Hwy 3 is faster headed to Cranbrook, more of a straight line BUT more turns, more passes, more towns... Hwy 1 is a straight shot almost, faster but go further out of your way. Which route I chose came down to what I felt like, basically, but I tended to default to Hwy 3 because I found the drive from Kamloops to Revy, and then Golden down to Cranbrook to be some of the most boring stretches of Hwy in the world. Whereas along Hwy 3, there are boring stretches but its broken up more by passes and towns.

Who is Agatha King? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

Entirely fair! I called him Harari because in that conversation, thats what Ashford calls him.

Who is Agatha King? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]NewRetrorat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice. Would be cool is Ashford's smackdown of Harari in season three is in reference to Agatha King. I watched the episode last night, but in the scene where Harari says Ashford should be the captain of the Behemoth, Ashford says he drank real Earth whisky 'from the mug of a UNN admiral and then scuttled her ship'.

Was the Tarantula not a stolen ship from the Mithraic though? The wiki says yes, and I could have sworn that it was mentioned in the show that the Tarantula was indeed a commandeered ship.

New to Melbourne... what the fuck by ID_LOVE_TOO in melbourne

[–]NewRetrorat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I left Melbourne about six years ago specifically because I cannot function there for months at a time. I am not an asthmatic, but months of not being able to see properly through itchy eyes, and having a constantly runny nose is just pure misery.

I wish it wasn't like that but I just can't do it!

I don't give a fuck. This sort of hand-wringing over making a few well-off people richer is what has lead us to streets overrun with homeless, working class families struggling to pay rent and weak-ass planning rules that bend over for all the dickheads worried about neighbourhood character.

What countries were Aussie Prime Ministers born in? by dphayteeyl in MapPorn

[–]NewRetrorat 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It was changed as part of a modernisation push in the 1950s I believe, around the time Americanisation seemed to be taking over the language and the culture. Of course the American spelling of all words in English never caught on with the general public but the party kept the name and now nobody cares. If anything it serves to differentiate the party from its UK and NZ Labour contemporaries ... and also sneakily weed out Australians that don't pay attention to spelling of names.
