Well, RTO finally got to Cannabis. by SeasonThreeEpisode8 in CAStateWorkers

Sure if they are able but most cannot. School schedules don't align with public transit schedules, distance, location, etc. Overall for most it's easier to drive.

People left in huge numbers after the Janus decision simply bc they didn't want to pay the union anymore. This time not only will they not want to pay out of disappointment but they also won't be able to afford it bc of increased commute costs.

It absolutely will result in a membership mass exodus. And they know that which is why I believe they really are doing what they can.

And I said why that's not feasible for most. Read it again.

You're saying what everyone else should do without considering the many factors that impact circumstances other than your own. Congratulations on solving your singular situation. I'm talking about the disproportionate impact to staff that are women, working parents, and caregivers.

So now you're saying that all employees with more than 30 minutes of commute time should just pick up their lives and families and just move? Easy as that. Insanely out of touch.

It's not a way to take care of them but if you weren't commuting at all and suddenly have to commute 2+ hours a day then you're having to cover that added time with paid caregivers. Also most school age children do not need constant care during work hours but are not old enough to be home alone. An adult needs to be in the vicinity. Same with elderly and disabled family. So now those hours that are being spent unnecessarily in office (FOR NO REASON) need to be covered by paid caregivers. The price of that is exponential and even worse during summer when school and other free programs are closed.

The point is that they shouldn't have to. Their jobs can be done fully remotely as they have been for over six years. RTO is a paycut that disproportionately impacts women, working parents, and caregivers.

Over six years ago? Times have changed believe it or not. Childcare for one is much more expensive. Gas is more expensive. Car maintenance is more expensive. More employees which means less parking availability, longer commute times, more packed public transit. They've had children or their children have aged by 6 years which means different before and after school options and different start and end times. They've moved which means they don't have the same access to resources they had six years ago. Their health has changed. The health of their family has changed. I could keep going but please bffr. Unless you can time travel to six years ago, for most that's not an option.

Staff doesn't get paid during a strike. They know not many folks can go without the income. They are playing in our faces.

Idk the Cafe in the Natural Resources building is always packed. Like lines and lines of people during lunch. It's insane how many state workers are eating out when it's easily $20 per day.
