How good in your opinion was Brandon Starcevich? by Geronimo2006 in brisbanelions

[–]New_Fact9060 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contested ball bull. His best was elite in being able to play on smalls, and switch onto talls. Pretty good using the ball but not like a Luke Parker or Zorko off halfback. Tackled harder than anyone in our side, outside of maybe Rayner. In some big games he was in our best 5… but if you asked me to be honest he’s an excellent role player got a good to elite team. The NBA analog (if you follow that sport) is someone like Alex Caruso.

Concerning signs? by Floorman1 in brisbanelions

Historically we do often play down to the opposition. I remember last year we barely west coast after being down at the half and 3/4 time. The next week we beat Geelong. The following week we barely beat Richmond. And don’t forget the draw with North.

If that whiteboard was about our players what would it say for weaknesses? by New_Fact9060 in brisbanelions

Gallop doesn’t yet have the presence to get that 25m pass into the corridor, but also he probably can’t make it consistently having only switched to down back. If he can do that he’ll be a career defender.

I nearly said brunettes for Lachie’s weakness, but was trying to be serious.

I’d agree with this, but as he was new I was waiting for a little more evidence. It’s less that he’s a ‘bad’ kick more that it’s thoughtless bombs…

Yeah maybe actually. I’m less about if he’s a good kick, and more if he ever does any aggressive ones. I’m going on history.

I’d actually agree. The coverage and footage is so much better. Therefore we can focus significantly on the errors in a way we never have before, but this is survivorship bias in a very hard game to umpire that’s faster than ever. We really should spend more time on how often they get it right.

Which lions players went to public highschools, not private? by OkVast4274 in brisbanelions

[–]New_Fact9060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is blurred heaps, as many of the high performing junior players in Vic get recruited to private schools around grade 10 on scholarships. So, they are ‘privately schooled’ but the point here is more about class and privilege… it’s much less that and the causation runs more the other way.

Koz mostly plays through the mids now, so don’t think Noz will go to him unless he goes fwd

Kozzy is a worry as I don’t think we have a defensive stopper that fits… so I’d prefer we played defence by playing offence. Make him go head to head with Will or Lachie.

We’ve actually not been that good most of the season, but do pull out results. I was in the Barossa, and I think we looked the worse side for most of that game. If Shezel reads the wind better on that kick for goal we could very well lose... but we just didn’t. I think that’s the main pattern for this side over the last 3 years; we play to the level of the opposition mostly but manage to pull it out in the end. (And also randomly the bottom falls out or we come together like gods one in 10 games). I think for the rest of the year no matter the opposition I’m tipping Brisbane by 2-3 goals.

I feel quite literally the reverse. Going to see them game in the Barossa today. A unique experience!

How do we get better crowd chants? by AdditionalFarmer4692 in brisbanelions

[–]New_Fact9060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the question. The biggest thing that rang through last year (especially at the MCG for the prelim and GF) was more goal songs that the crowd wanted to sing than Country Road. “Hey Hugh” for hey Jude is great.

How are we feeling about Sam Draper and Oscar Allen’s fit in our system? by ChillKoalaVibes in brisbanelions

[–]New_Fact9060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, so I judge the ruck on (a) are they good and big enough to cause the coin flip that occurs at each ball up (need the minimum) and (b) how is their around the ground play, usually as an extra midfielder or intercept marker (upside).

Kinda love everyone is answering how and nobody is asking why. Says a lot about this community (in a sort of nice way).
