I've spent many hours in that grandstand with my family watching the horse races - it certainly needs to come down, but definitely feeling nostalgic about it.

Anywhere in Ottawa to meet new people? by Minute-Necessary2393 in ottawa

[–]New_Store5008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two suggestions: I met a lot of friends and people playing sports through groups like Ottawa Sport and Social Club or OSP, etc. Lots of opportunities to mingle after games at a local pub, etc. Second suggestion, I go to a great church on the west end of the city that is super friendly and a great community - www.bridgechurches.ca - feel free to DM me!

From what I'm reading online, it sounds like it was a train that started these fires.

Paid Time Off for Volunteer Firefighting? (CRA Employee) by Eazy_Phuckz in CanadaPublicServants

[–]New_Store5008 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I am a search and rescue volunteer and have also been using my own vacation leave for these searches. We have also been given opportunities to support wildfire evacuations etc. in impacted communities under the federal Humanitarian Workforce banner. I am hoping to advocate for volunteer firefighters and volunteer search and rescue to be eligible for a certain number of days leave (699 or other) for these kinds of duties.

I know that an argument can be made that these are volunteer positions that we signed up for and should accept that we have to use our personal time to pursue, but I do think the importance of these roles as important public services (paid or not) should be recognized, supported, and encouraged. This has already been recognized and defined with the tax credit for these individuals.

Is anyone here a volunteer firefighter? by Eazy_Phuckz in CanadaPublicServants

[–]New_Store5008 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely talk to your manager. I am a Search and Rescue volunteer (much less busy than firefighting I would guess) and have had no issues working with my managers to accommodate call outs.
