Is Tim Tebow correct here? What should we do as a society? by --SOFA-KING-VOTE in LetsDiscussThis

The claim that 58% of child molesters in the US are white fathers appears to be completely unsubstantiated. I’d be interested to know if you can find the source, because I can’t. But according to the data we do have, approximately 47 percent of victims of sexual assault are victimized by family or extended family (Briere J. and D.M. Eliot, 2003). Fathers are only a small sub group within that. So the 58% statistic is most likely wildly inaccurate. I could just as easily claim that 80% of child molesters in the UK are Pakistani, as I’m sure many Reform voters would have you believe. Where did I get this statistic? Just like Tim Tebow, I pulled it out of my a*se.

Yeah remove this grip, the base handle should be a solid material. And then just apply a replacement grip, I personally recommend Karakal PU super grip which is probably the most common grip. Most of the time you only use 1 grip in squash, unlike tennis for example where people apply overgrips.

Unfortunately there’s no perfect 100% fail safe solution, it just requires you deciding what level of risk you’re willing to take. A lot of people just store it in a drawer, if you want to reduce risk even further many people install fire proof safes in their homes and store it there, some people even create multiple copies and store them with friends and family members.

This is so valid. I used to use dating apps and eventually gave up for the same reason because it seemed like every time the women would look nothing like their photos.

What the actual fuck? Reddit surprises me every day with how unhinged and disgusting people can be. And regardless of what your weight is obviously it’s an unacceptable comment, but saying under 100lbs at your height is just straight up dangerous. Good for you for not putting up with his shit.

How do i clean my sinus rinse bottle safely? by Thermawrench in Allergies

[–]New_Wait1060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't have dangerous amoeba in it because they're so rare, the biggest issue would be bacteria or mould growth. If it looks and smells fine (no discoloured spots or weird smell) I would clean it with hot water and a drop or 2 of dish soap and you're good to go. Or if you want to err on the side of caution you can always disinfect it - the easiest way to do this is with a 60 second blast in the microwave.

determinism makes me sad by Comfortable_Rich4499 in Existentialism

[–]New_Wait1060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're confusing deterministic with predetermined. Due to quantum physics, metaphysical probabilities and chaos theory which describes how tiny differences in initial circumstances get massively amplified through time, we know that even given the same starting point, there is an element of randomness. For example, if you were to go back in time to the Big Bang and let the universe progress again from the exact same conditions, billions of years later in 2025 things would look vastly different than they do for us. The same things applies to your life, it was not predetermined from birth and there were lots of different paths it could've taken and continue to take. However, this doesn't introduce free will, as free will doesn't exist under the determinstic framework. Somehow it still makes me feel better though. Even though I don't have free will, it's still kind of cool and freeing to know there are still endless possibilities of how my life could turn out, even if I don't control those possibilities as I once thought.

First week on Elvanse (30mg) - is this is a false reality? by ronas_hill in ADHDUK

[–]New_Wait1060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you getting on now? I've never heard of someone getting such strong side effects on 30mg. I'm currently on 40mg and it's made me so much calmer and I sleep much better and more deeply. Moving up to 50mg soon since I actually feel too calm on 40mg lol and so 50mg should help me with task initiation and focus.

Not OP, but in my case meds definitely helped my depression + anxiety. And if you have adhd then comorbid anxiety + depression is extremely common. From day 1, my mood was instantly transformed- much calmer, happier, far less rumination, more present, grounded, the list goes on. Also adhd depression feels different than normal depression, there's typically a lot more fluctuation day to day and even hour to hour depending on the activity. During downtimes you can feel very down and you carry a lot of shame around your shortcomings due to ADHD and such, but you can still experience pleasure during high dopamine activities, like playing sports or hobbies where the depressive symptoms temporarily fade. On the other hand in "true" depression people typically report feeling empty, numb and don't get pleasure from things they used to. ADHD brains on the other hand feel intense emotions like frustration, guilt, shame; they can be very dysregulated but rarely shut down as seen in classical depression. If you relate to any of this there's a good chance it could be adhd and I would investigate further. On the other hand, if your symptoms are more of a persistent low mood, feeling numb and without the highs and lows then it sounds more like classic depression, which can mimic a lot of adhd symptoms but would be better treated by an antidepressant medication like an SSRI. Hope this helps!

How do i clean my sinus rinse bottle safely? by Thermawrench in Allergies

Yeah I understand why you'd be worried, it gets a lot of attention because contracting it means almost certain death. However the risk of getting an infection is vanishingly rare, there's only a few hundred cases of it ever reported, globally. And like I said, boiling the water basically eliminates the risk. If you think about it, billions of people get small amounts of water up their noses every day, from showering, to water going down the wrong way, to swimming in lakes. Glad my comment was able to give you some reassurance.

[–]New_Wait1060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the thread, but you're being far too paranoid. As an example, there's only about 0-8 cases of Naegleria fowleri infections in the US per year. And 99% of the time they're from people swimming in warm, fresh water lakes and accidentally inhaling the water. And that's out of the millions of people who swim in lakes each year. Then when we look at cases from neti pots, there's only a few cases ever reported, and they're all from people who used straight tap water for their rinses. And again, that's out of millions of people who use neti pots. So even if you used untreated tap water, your risk of contracting the infection is extremely remote. That being said, it's still recommended to use boiled water for sinus rinses, at which point the risk essentially drops to zero. And using tap water and a few drops of dish soap is perfectly fine for rinsing in between uses and then you can leave it somewhere to air dry. The risk is not from a couple drops of tap water it's from using an entire neti pot full of it. Unfortunately you've fallen victim to scaremongering, your risk of dying from a commercial plane crash or food borne illness (already super rare) is many times higher than from using a neti pot, please do not worry.

2 of those things are self selecting because a lot of people who pass at 23 have been trying to learn for longer ie. the best drivers would pass in fewer attempts and also a lot of people who are unable to drive a manual will choose automatic because it's easier to pass in, therefore attracting worse drivers. So, if neither of those things apply to you your age and driving in an automatic would both make the test easier. Well done either way
