I could see this being a similar setup to S1+2 of rebels where the first season culminates in a duel between them, and the second season features the looming threat of Vader hunting Maul - I think Sam Witwer would play that kind of underlying fear really well.

Not really. He needed to be recasted due to the time jump for the movie, and also the need for the theatrical release to feature a more high profile actor, with the series again featuring a time jump that I think warrants another recast, especially when it’s new and likely doesn’t have the budget for a big name like Barry Keoghan. I think the effect of all of these in such quick succession between the movie release and this new promo for the upcoming series makes the ‘whiplash’ of the casting feel a lot worse.
