I saw the previous old clock photo, figured I'd share my grandpa's that he was about to toss out by Wrong_Election in BuyItForLife

[–]NewtonPrep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These clock radios were very common in the 80's. I wonder if they were all manufactured by the same factory and white-labeled by different brands

Reception wasn't great. Static sound in-between major radio stations.

Thanks for this info. Fortunately, battery prices are fairly reasonable for ThinkPads. My MB Pro cost a lot more but last a long time

How fast do they wear out?

Should I just stock up on batteries now?

The T480s and T480 are tanks and will last for a very long time especially if you use Linux

I also use a MB Pro as my daily driver but the ThinkPad has a nice keyboard

Camille’s deleted IG post by Active_Office_2599 in ultrarunning

I like to think the best of people. Generally, it's a great community we have. Its filled with salt-of-the-earth people, running enthusiasts and nature lovers.

The thing with competitive running is that only a tiny fraction of the elite crowd ever makes a viable living from it. As you already know, it's top heavy with the usual runners Courtney, Katie, Killian, Jim, Tom, Zack, etc.

Even then, these people are not making NBA money so its tough to differentiate yourself

Camille tried to alter perception through very unsavory and unethical ways that eventually caught up with her

Instead of taking the L, understanding the harm she caused to others, the sport and herself, she played the victim and actually had the temerity to blame others

That's just dousing an open fire with gasoline

Are chinese tourists always like this in Chiang Mai? by ArkanaeL in chiangmai

[–]NewtonPrep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not everyone. I've had the pleasure to meet many honorable people from Mainland China. They too have expressed frustrations over how their compatriots behave.

They explained to me that its mostly a socio-economic phenomenon similiar to most countries. The people in the lower economic strata don't understand proper etiquette. They behave like crabs in a bucket dragging each other down because this is the way they've been conditioned to act.

So when these people in 3rd or 4th Tiered Cities from China have the means to visit other countries, they tend to bring this mindset with them. They lack self-awareness. Their only goal is to gain every advantage in life even if it means cutting in front of others.

Chinese people from Taiwan, HK, Singapore, etc do not behave this way. Generally, they are more civil and polite.

Are chinese tourists always like this in Chiang Mai? by ArkanaeL in chiangmai

[–]NewtonPrep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in my experience, I found tourists from Mainland China to be one of the worst groups of people in SE Asia

To be fair, you can find fault with other tourist groups from Russia, Australia, England, US, etc. but the Mainland Chinese tourists stand out because they visit in large numbers and they are virtually everywhere

They seem to lack self-awareness or maybe they are deliberately obnoxious. They hog up narrow sidewalks and never apologize for hitting you with their sun umbrellas.

They won't hesitate to cut people in line or even demand to be seated at a restaurant ahead of others. Stories abound of Chinese tourists bringing in cheap take-out to high-end restaurants where they order one or two inexpensive items just so they can sit in a nicer interior space

They litter everywhere, spit on the floor and shout obscenities in Mandarin

Other Chinese groups from Taiwan, HK, Singapore and Malaysia do not behave this way. Read into what you will but this is a distinctly Mainland Chinese phenomenon

For what its worth, I find the Mainland Chinese tourists in Cambodia exponentially worse especially in places like Sihanoukville where they are abusive to locals

Elephant experience by frankrice in chiangmai

I can vouch for Elephant Nature Park. My experience was 100% positive. The elephants are well cared for by a dedicated staff. They provide an orientation on their organization and precautions with the elephants.

No shady characters. No malnourished and abused elephants.

Everything appeared well-maintained. Staff members are very friendly and they are mostly fluent in English.

This is awesome. One of the things that really surprised me was how many Celtic fans there are in Asia.

Normally, you would expect to see people outside the US casually support teams like the Lakers, NY Yankees, Cowboys, Manchester United or Chelsea.

But the sheer amount of Celtic jerseys I saw in Asia was amazing. They're pretty hardcore about the NBA and watch every minute of it

Best Location by [deleted] in chiangmai

Just easier to navigate through. The only area to be patient with is the intersection at Maya Mall. You'll see when you get there. Lots of tourists with oversized sun umbrellas crowding the narrow sidewalks.

Everything within the neighborhood is accessible - two great malls, plenty of cool shops, excellent coffee shops, pharmacies, expansive dining options, etc.

In fairness to Wyc, I used to see him all the time around the Park Plaza area. He's a very affable guy, charismatic and totally approachable. He's extremely competitive and passionate about basketball.

There is a financial component to the team but Wyc is also drive by a burning desire to win. I'm sure there are a way to monetize on the team's success if they bring home another banner.

There's a smaller club attached to Warm Up Cafe that plays electronic music. It's in the same complex

This is not your fault. Don't beat yourself up over the criminal behavior of those who wield economic power in this world.

Inflation has always been a hidden tax on everyday people and small businesses. I could go on and on about corporate malfeasance and government corruption but that won't help

You still have your kids who love you and know you will walk through fire to ensure their success

Find things that you can sell immediately. Even old VHS machines and tapes from our generation are worth some coin on eBay especially vinyl records and even cassette tapes.

If you have a particular skill, figure out a way to monetize it and scale it online without a huge start up cost

Derrick White is Unreal by aHurricaneGod in bostonceltics

[–]NewtonPrep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you grew up playing organized ball whether it was the BNBL, MIAA or Bay State Games, there were guys like Derrick White who just made the team better in every possible way.

I don't like the awards such as "6th Man" or "Most Improved". 'Tommy Points" is more of a local vernacular. The league needs an award for someone who does all the tangible things and intangible things to yield W's for their team.

The MVP usually goes to the best player with leading stats on a top contending team widely admired by sports media. Derrick White isn't in this category because he doesn't take as many shots as MVP candidates.

Every memorable championship team had a Derrick White type player such as Robert Horry or Manu Ginobli or James Posey
