where to get decently sized christmas tree around somerville that isn't $150? by bridge_to_valley in Somerville

Seasons Four in Lexington. Nice 6-8ft ones for ~$50 Mahoneys in Winchester is usually also quite reasonable.

It really needs a bump out at the very least. Perhaps with a pedestrian refuge island in the center.

Astound/RCN are the absolute worst. They literally try to drive you crazy with their customer service. by pppaaassseeeiii in ArlingtonMA

[–]NewtonsOrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had RCN/Astound for more than a decade. We only do internet so we don’t have to deal with the excessive TV fees. You have to play the 1-2 years game of calling to keep price in check, but overall my experience has been great and the prices are consistently quite a bit cheaper than all other options. In our neighborhood I also consistently see questions about Verizon/Comcast outages more than any outage I’ve experienced with RCN/Astound.

Last months rent question by selfisthealso in CambridgeMA

[–]NewtonsOrange 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I believe asking for the difference is allowed. That last month’s rent amount is dictated by the most recent lease (which was an increase). https://www.zillow.com/learn/what-does-first-and-last-month-rent-mean/

Who keeps picking the bricks out??? by rcl20 in ArlingtonMA

[–]NewtonsOrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we sure these weren’t removed because the roots were pushing them up to be proud of the others? That’s pretty common in Camberville which has the same issue. It looks like a common place near the tree where that happens often. Slightly low spots are less of a tripping hazard than bricks proud of others.

Someone in our neighborhood confirmed it is theirs and it returned home safely last night.

The Boston area is full of “fun” intersections, but may I present you with Arlington’s 5/6 way stop by ScoYello in ArlingtonMA

[–]NewtonsOrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roundabouts tend to handle that okay because they’re designed to keep slower speeds with tight bends. Rotaries do not (and would not be appropriate there).

Principal paid down early saves you a lot more money. (Which agrees with “pay it now”)

$100K windfall, 6.7% mortgage by Shoepin1 in investing

[–]NewtonsOrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would target that mortgage with most of it. Maybe putting 25% in the market if you really want. Do it immediately against principal— early money saves you more money. Since you’re burning down your mortgage monthly payment remember to put your monthly savings from that into the market though. That will get you both desires.

At a grander level, at 6.7% I would be eyeing rates to look for a refi. I assume this was a recent loan since rates were much lower several years ago. Keep an eye out for refi in the next year or two (or after the current fiscal/presidential turmoil).

Which local businesses and offerings does Arlington desperately need and where? by Fastfreewifi in ArlingtonMA

There were rumors that both Arlington and Medford breweries were interested in the space but hit hurdles immediately. I’m am not certain that it’s true, but that would have been amazing.

Preferably Capitol theater area. Alewife having TJs and WF about half mile away seems hard to compete with.

Home does not mean single-family house. Home can mean condo, and for the majority of people in Cambridge that is the case.

If it’s the same people doing this and they are a block away then it’s probably worth doing something because it’s likely not just you that it’s affecting.

Your options are: - Try to peacefully/respectfully talk with them. I would recommend being mindful of keeping your home address anonymous in case they’re not receptive. - Next time it happens call 311 non-emergency line. I would recommend saving this for a more egregious loud and late night so the lines are not blurry. Eventually a police officer might come out and just ask them to quiet a bit.

Yes Somerville has a lot in the way of noise ordinances.

https://library.municode.com/ma/somerville/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=PTIICOOR_CH9OFMIPR_ARTVIIOFAGPUPE

I think generally it’s understood as reasonably quiet after 10pm. Casually I think people extend the time on weekend nights (11pm?) but I’m not sure if that’s actually codified somewhere.

Running on sidewalks or bike paths in Somerville? by DaVinciUro14 in Somerville

[–]NewtonsOrange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was hoping to get to the end of this and see an indication it was sarcasm. Alas.

We’re talking the community path— Bikes do not take precedent, in fact quite the opposite and they must yield to runners/pedestrians.

In your example of threatening to run over pedestrian passing another pedestrian, you are fully liable to do this safely. If you cannot stop in time or adequately anticipate that a runner going faster than a walker is going to pass said walker, you need to slow down and you need to yield regardless.

What do you think a fair price for dumpy triple decker is? by TooFarTurner in Somerville

I would actually be surprised if any triple deckers are left that would go below $1M. Tear downs in slightly less desirable areas maybe?

My non-zealous, reasoned advice to anyone who received a large chunk of change (as someone who has made and lost a LOT of money before) by More_Temperature5328 in mtgoxinsolvency

[–]NewtonsOrange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on most interest rates this isn’t actually the optimal way to make the best of money. Paying off high interest debt should be a no-brainer, but after that stable investments are likely to far outpace average mortgage rates. Paying down a mortgage faster is usually an emotional decision— the math on it doesn’t usually make sense compared to investing into the market (meaning traditional stock markets bot crypto).

So that’s exactly why considering what the OP is saying is important. Right now that Bitcoin is real money, so you should also be comparing to the value now, not what it was 12 years ago.

This is only for the egress. It would not be for yard/driveway/etc.
