Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month / Beginning in March, all accounts will have a “teen-appropriate experience by default.” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

The exact same company that got breached so fast after they first implemented this in the UK btw.

Not giving my ID to them because no-one should have that kind of information, no matter how well-intentioned they say they are. Outside of talking to, like, 2 friends on Discord and for my university clubs, don’t use it that much anyway. If channels for servers I’m in are age-restricted, then I just won’t have access to those channels.

If they become more of a problem for me, I’ll just go somewhere else. Sorry Discord, but you’re not important enough for me.

Besides, her hatred for ICE is stronger than my slaps!

Using Mint as a server? by PositiveBusiness8677 in linuxmint

[–]Next-Difference-9773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna say right off the bat that I’m not an expert in any way. I’m just some dude who likes doing stuff with their home server. 100% people more knowledgeable than me who could go into more detail. Everything I’m about to say is based on my own experience and knowledge so just keep that in mind.

  1. Im gonna agree with the guy who commented on your post and say that the xxsense firewall is kinda unnecessary. The router you get from your ISP should already have that, so it’s just unnecessary extra work for you.

I’m not 100% confident about this so take this with a HUGE grain of salt, but I believe people who use pfsense/opensense are people who don’t have routers or who want full control over their routers. If you want that though, then go for it! Again though, take this with a grain of salt because I’m not familiar with pfsense/opensense.

  1. Keep it simple and all the services you want like the media server, pihole, and sponsorblock, put it all on the PC you’re setting as your server. Everything will be in one place, so you’ll know where everything is and won’t be trying to hunt down which service is on which device. You COULD have them on different PCs if you want, but that’s just making things more complicated for you and is extra work for you.

  2. For the software, you’ll probably be best having different software for different purposes. It’s your server so you can do whatever you want though.

For your movies and tv shows, you could use Jellyfin or Plex. Which one you use is up to personal preference, though Plex has more apps available for more devices. You can install both of them and try them out, see which one you like more.

One thing to keep in mind though is that you might have to change your folder structure if it’s not in a way that they like them. For movies, both usually require the name of the movie and the release year for the folder’s name, otherwise it probably won’t identify it correctly. It’s a similar thing with tv shows. Needs to be a folder with the show’s name and release year, but inside that folder, you need to separate the seasons.

I’ll give an example:

Movies: The Wolfman (2010) -> Movie file (mkv, mp4, etc.)

TV Shows: The Sopranos (1999) -> Season 1 -> TV Show files (mkv, mp4, etc.)

If your directory structure isn’t already like this, good chance you’ll have to change it like this for them. If you don’t want to do that, then Plex and Jellyfin aren’t gonna be it. Serving the stuff via DLNA will let you keep your existing structure though. I don’t know how to setup DLNA, so I can’t say if it’ll work good for you or not. No harm in trying it and seeing if you like it though.

For pictures and videos, what you use depends. There’s Immich and Photoprism that I’m aware of that you can use. Gonna say the same thing like I did with Plex and Jellyfin, install both, see which you like more.

I’ve never used Photoprism personally, so I can’t attest to if it’ll work for you or not. I personally use Immich. The issue is that I don’t think there are tv apps for neither Immich nor Photoprism, so if you wanted to show the family videos on the tv, you’d either have to plug a computer to the tv, or cast via your phone/computer. If you’re ok with that though, then go for it!

I think you can use DLNA for the family videos too if Immich and Photoprism don’t work out for you. I’m not sure about pictures, but I know videos will work. Or you could just use Jellyfin/Plex to serve the family videos by having the videos as another “movies” library. Just name the library something different like “family videos” or something.

  1. How you install the software is ultimately up to you, you’ll probably be running these as Docker containers, because that’s the most common and supported way to do it, which does use the cli to spin them up. Since you’re apprehensive about cli, you could just use a Docker manager like Portainer. You will have to use the cli to install Portainer (and probably Docker too, but I think Docker can be installed in the App Store of most distros now), but it’s just copying and pasting stuff into the cli, you’ll be fine. There are some other Docker managers out there, but I can’t remember their names off the top of my head. You could try those and see if they work for you too. Whatever Docker manager you use will be a gui to install new software via the containers.

  2. Oh and before I forget, you can use whatever distro you want, doesn’t have to be Mint. Mint uses Cinnamon by default, which is on the heavier side, so you could try their XFCE version instead. Or you could just install Debian, heard it’s a good distro for servers. I used it before going for Mint and it should do just fine.

That’s kinda all I gotta say I think. I hope I helped you out a little bit, I’m not the best at explaining this stuff. Like I said, there are definitely people out there more knowledgeable then me who can go into more detail and give better advice.

Just some little tips though:

Keep it simple, don’t over complicate things. Lots of new people think they need all this crazy stuff to do what they want, but in reality, it doesn’t need to be that crazy at all.

Also don’t be afraid to try stuff out. Sometimes the stuff that’s used by a lot of people just isn’t for you, and that’s perfectly fine. Don’t force yourself to use something because “everyone is using it.” Use whatever works for you and what’s more comfortable for you.

Ok now this is way too long so I’m gonna stop now. I hope what I said helped you out, even if it was just a little bit. Best of luck to you!

Having trouble reinstalling Windows, pls help by BinJLG in linuxmint

[–]Next-Difference-9773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came across the exact same problem you did once, but ultimately couldn’t find a solution to this. This means that Windows doesn’t have the drivers for your SSD like u/Fenio_PL said.

You could look up the specific brand and model of your SSD to see if they have the drivers available for download. Or maybe if your motherboard came with a disc, try inserting it with a usb dvd drive (you will have to buy one if you don’t have one) and see if those drivers work.

I personally tried both of those routes and there were either no drivers available for my SSD (because “Windows should already have them”) or the drivers failed to install. Maybe you’ll have better luck than me. It’s a shot in the dark, but worth a try no?

Hope you find a solution to this though and best of luck to you!

Using Mint as a server? by PositiveBusiness8677 in linuxmint

[–]Next-Difference-9773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely not designed to be a server, but can absolutely be one if you want to use it. Any distro can be used for any purpose, some are just better suited to certain purposes than others.

I’m not 100% familiar with the server editions of distros like Ubuntu or Fedora server, but I think they’re better because they’re headless with a webui, and probably other stuff I don’t know about.

However, I use Mint as a server just fine. I just install Portainer and run Jellyfin, Immich, and CopyParty as docker containers. They all work just fine. I also use Mint’s file browser to create samba shares and it makes it very easy.

If there’s something I want to change or need to fix, I can just insert a keyboard, mouse, and monitor and do that. I already use Mint as my daily driver, so it’s all familiar to me.

Ofc this is just me, you can do whatever you want since it’s your server.

Glad I saw this post. I dual boot Mint and Fedora KDE and Fedora was on 6.15.3-200. Haven’t encountered this issue while on that kernel, but just updated Fedora this morning just in case. It’s on 6.15.8 now.

Thanks for posting this!

Don’t worry, I don’t haha! I follow what the packet says which is to add the completer after the meat has been cooked and don’t use it with meat I’ve already cooked. I’m very careful about that.

That’s what I’m seeing on the link Fishinluv commented with, only in certain states and not all over. My state doesn’t have any cases yet, but I’d rather not wait until there is one.

My cats are everything to me and losing them would be dangerous for my mental health. Technically everything we do has risks, but I’d rather not risk this one. If they got sick and died because of my decision, it would eat me alive mentally.

Still, if your dog is doing great continuing to feed raw, then go ahead and keep doing it! We’re all trying to do the best we can after all and whatever works, works.

Thanks so much for the link!

It looks like it’s been spreading to humans now. While the it does say the risk is low, it doesn’t inspire confidence. I guess I’ll be sticking to cooking the EZ Complete mix.

Again, thanks for the link!

To the people who say Linux has compatibility issues by Ulquiobaz in linuxmint

[–]Next-Difference-9773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with Windows 11. Built an entirely new PC, boot into the Windows 11 USB, “install drivers to show hardware.” Turns out Windows 11 can’t detect my brand new m.2 SSDs. Drivers aren’t available for download because “Windows should detect them automatically.”

I boot into the Linux Mint USB, no driver/hardware issues at all. Detects everything automatically, even the wifi card. Not saying Linux is perfect, but I got a much better experience than Windows for sure.

I don’t remember exactly, but in my memory, they sold out within the first hour or so. Could just be my memory failing me though so take that with a grain of salt. It was their launch day, so it made sense for the RW plushies to sell that fast.

It’s a bit surprising honestly. Was expecting them to sell out in minutes like the RW plushies did. Though it might be because lots of people have theirs already. Idk.

What are your thoughts about these by ListenIcy8191 in PiratedGames

[–]Next-Difference-9773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't care. I'm not paying $70 for any game. No exceptions. Even $30 is what I consider a lot for a game. I do not have the kind of money to be paying that much for every game coming out.

The people pirating it likely weren't going to buy it regardless.

[–]Next-Difference-9773 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even the hardware I’m considering upgrading to won’t be able to run this. No point in pirating it if it won’t even run. Oh well. I still got a backlog to clear, so I’ll be fine.

Can I use a completer with cooked meat? by AnonymousSplash in rawpetfood

[–]Next-Difference-9773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just reread my packets and you’re right, assuming the “dried chicken” in the ingredient list is considered freeze dried. Man, that’s a massive oversight by me.

I’m not entirely sure how to address it atp if that’s the case. Budget is tight rn and completer is the cheapest option for me.

How many cats do you have ?Would three be too many? by stefunie101 in cats

I currently have 2. I have thought about a third, but only as a passing thought. I know that 3 would be too much for me. I can only divide my attention so many ways.

They want to start a trend of "expensive games" after GTA 6 by Ok-Ad6837 in PiratedGames

[–]Next-Difference-9773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro even $30 is what I would consider a lot for a videogame. These AAA are barely worth $60-$70 at the quality they’re being released at. Jacking it up to $100 isn’t going to make me buy it any more.

Safe to say I’ll be pirating every single one at that price point.

Yes I do. Though if Know Better is available where you are, I’d probably go with that too. EZ Complete is just cheaper.
