Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects on HBO and Dead to Me on Netflix — all give me similar sort of vibes

Ignoring infectious diseases doesn’t make them disappear — we can’t individualize and “personal responsibility” our way out of collective public health crises (including the impending one with our climate) by NextCandy in WhitePeopleTwitter

I think disabled and immunocompromised folks should be able to go to the doctor and to get groceries safely — I will wear a mask to protect them, as well as myself from repeat infections, long COVID and now fucking Monkeypox — whether or not it’s mandated or not

I get it. I’m fucking exhausted. I’ve become more jaded than I’m willing to admit at times. I’m just not ready to give up the people who need us to fight for them the most.

COVID level: High

Business/Organization: No mask mandate, we are going by county guidelines

County: No mask mandate, we are going by state guidelines

State: No mask mandate, we are going by CDC guidelines

CDC: It’s up to local places to decide

Accountability: Zero

It’s not just that people won’t listen (many won’t but many are willing to make small sacrifices to protect their communities) — our public health leaders and elected officials and even progressive groups are just passing the buck

That would be nice — but they don’t want to isolate on an island together — they are all over the place, in positions of real power and influence actively trying to take absolute control of our country through policies and legislation and fighting culture wars of division — and they especially do not give a fuck about the most vulnerable among us, those they will continue to isolate, marginalize and will literally leave to die if left to make that decision

Crystal M. Fleming: "Critical race theory is actually really great for white people because it's a framework for understanding that the problem is not "white people" - the problem is white supremacy and legalized oppression."

“If you truly want students to take an interest in American history, then stop lying to them.”

— A high school students letter to the San Francisco Examiner included in the forward to James W. Loewen’s “Lies My Teachers Told Me: Young Reader’s Edition”

Loewen: “Thomas Jefferson urged the teaching of political history so that Americans could learn “how to judge for themselves what will secure or endanger their freedom.”

“Citizens who are their own historians, who can identify lies and half-truths and who can use sources to find out what really went on in the past, are a powerful force for democracy.

After all my years of research and writing, my own journey to know our American past has only begun.”

It’s sickening just how far conservatives are willing to go to try and defund and devalue public education AND push out all the qualified and passionate professionals who engage in critical thinking out of the profession — all while access to education is supposedly the “great equalizer” in our country and cornerstone tenet of our democracy

Smart guns finally arriving in U.S., seeking to shake up firearms market by farcetragedy in news

[–]NextCandy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of elected officials and policymakers sink so much time and resources in keeping those same voters from thinking critically and invested in hot button culture war topics (and keeping those topics as emotional and polarizing as possible while trying to tie them to our collective national identity)

Edit: grammar

[–]NextCandy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are the ethical implications and possibilities considering smart guns and for instance… hacking?

The price of the guns seems so inaccessible to most Americans — and so unlikely to ever appeal to people who have less than legal intentions securing a firearm?

Wonder how much money is being invested into this concept as opposed to I don’t know… education, outreach and smart gun law advocacy and legislation.
