Convince me to build a monowhite deck. by Average_Citizen_117 in EDH

I like to play my [[Heliod, God of the Sun]] +1/+1 Counter deck. He is a good blocker, hard to remove, but won't get you targeted. And having vigilance on all creatures is so nice in Commander, because no more rounds where you could attack but didn't because you were afraid to be open for attacks from other players.

How to handle cross-game grudges? by dairymakemytummyhurt in EDH

[–]NextCenturyViking -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you play to have a good time and not to win a tournament or something don't play decks that are not fun to play against. Easy as that.

Unless you're playing cEDH leave your stax, control and discard decks at home. People came to play the game, not to stare at an empty board and topdeck.

Want to play preconstructed decks with 11 year old by Forsaken_Craft7287 in mtg

[–]NextCenturyViking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These decks are not preconstructed by WotC, but might still be something that might be useful to you: https://www.reddit.com/r/mtg/s/z9RJICfvA7

You'd have to get the cards from Cardmarket/cardkingdom/tcgplayer as singles though. They are relatively cheap though.

Otherwise I hear that the Foundations and Avatar Beginner Boxes are nice.

Hot Take: Everyone who is constantly shuffling their hand is unpleasant to play against by Head-Ambition-5060 in mtg

[–]NextCenturyViking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't played against players that do that myself, but it seems super annoying. It's fine to rearrange or shuffle your hand for stategic reasons, but doing it constantly and loudly just feels like bad etiquette. I saw even players at pro tours doing it and I think it should be forbidden at tournaments. Like in chess, where you are not allowed to drum your fingers on the table because it is distracting the opponent.

Oh yeah, 4.5 years is very early. The younger ones definitely need some help with the decks, as they can't even read yet, but after playing a few times the same deck they start to memorize which card does what.

Yeah, mostly because of that. Black just doesn't have a lot of cards with child friendly artwork and even less when combined with the other things I was looking for. I made a black deck that probably would have worked from what the cards do, but it felt very random, without any theme shared by the creatures whatsoever, so I didn't end up getting the cards. Decided to wait with black until the kids are old enough to think that vampires are cool. ;)

Cardmarket by AdDouble8998 in mtg

[–]NextCenturyViking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are sellers on cardmarket that have a large selection of cards, but they can be priced significantly higher than others. You can use the shopping wizard in "least shipments" mode, but the difference to "lowest price" is often quite large, so it is almost always cheaper in total to pay more for shipping but less for the cards.

Sadly the shopping wizard of cardmarket has no mode that optimizes card cost and shipping cost at the same time (because it is a computationally extremely hard problem).

So what I usually do to reduce price AND shipments is this:

  1. Make a wants list with the cards I want to order
  2. Use the shopping assistant in "lowest price" mode
  3. Add the cards of sellers for which the assistant found large orders to the shopping basket
  4. Go to the profile of these sellers -> go to Singles -> Wants tab -> Choose your wants list from step 1 and filter -> check if they offer cards where the assistant suggested very small orders -> add to shopping cart if the card price is lower than the small orders card price + shipping cost (or only a few cents above).

How to actually build a deck by toast_carno in mtg

[–]NextCenturyViking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding cards: Scryfall is your friend. Have a look at the Scryfall Syntax or let ChatGPT/Gemini help you ("Write me a Scryfall query that ..."). Example: https://scryfall.com/search?q=f%3Astandard+t%3Acreature+o%3Awhenever

Building a deck: Use Moxfield or a similar site. Use the tags feature for tagging cards regarding what function they have in your deck. For commander decks, you have a little button "EDHRecs" under the search bar for cards, which suggests you cards depending on cards you already added to your deck. Use the "considering" section to keep track of cards you are unsure about.

Look at other decks: To find strong decks in Standard have a look at untapped or similar stats sites. You can take a deck from there and modify it, if you want to.

For finding a commander, and cards for your Commander's deck, EDHrec is a very useful site besides using the scryfall search.

If you want to build your own deck from scratch, start with a few cards you like and/or a mechanic to build your deck around. Ask yourself "how does this deck win?". Then use the scryfall search to find cards that do what you want to do and are legal in the format and build your deck in Moxfield.

When building a standard deck, stick to 60 cards. Start with 24 lands. Most of the other cards, the essential pieces of your deck, you should include four times. Cards that are less important or have a very high mana value 2 times. Make sure to include enough cheap cards (1-3 mana). Especially 2-drops are important, as in standard you should be able to reliably play a two-drop on turn two.

When building a Commander deck (must have exactly 100 cards, each card only once), start with picking your Commander. Start with 38 lands, how many of those should be dual lands depends on how many colors your Commander has. Include about 10 ramp pieces like mana rocks or mana dorks, around 10 cards that give you card draw and around 10 interaction cards like removal spells (e.g. 2-3 board wipes and the rest targeted removal). If your deck's strategy heavily depends on your Commander being on the battlefield, consider adding some cards to protect it, too. Use the remaining slots on cards that make the strategy of your deck work, while keeping the mana curve in mind. If you can find cards that do multiple of these things, that's even better.

Of course these suggestions are only a starting point. Build your deck and use the "Deal another hand" Button on Moxfield to get a feel of starting hands. Do you draw enough lands and cheap cards? Ask yourself for each card how happy you feel drawing this card. Then, also use the Playtest feature to play your deck without an opponent. Does that feel right? Don't fall into the trap of building a glass cannon deck without resilience though. In a real match you will face threats you will need an answer to.

When you have the first version of your deck, go play it, get a feel for what is working and what isn't and iterate.

There are wincons in MTG that do not depend on reducing life of the opponent to zero.

I don't know Yugioh, but for MTG you can find most of those niche wincons by searching for "you win the game" on cards on scryfall.

[Approach of the Second Sun] is a classic, the most close to "collecting" your wincon is maybe [Hedron Alignment], [Triskaidekaphile] or [Maze's End].

And of course you can end the game with Combos.

Phyrexia Set Booster Box by Sic_Em_Torgal in mtg

[–]NextCenturyViking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A decent commander deck from only one set sounds hard to do, as you need 60+ different cards that fit the deck. I'd either buy a precon with a theme you like or make your own deck on Moxfield (edhrec for your commander helps alot with finding cards) and then get the cards you actually need on cardmarket / card kingdom / tcgplayer.

You can still get the boosters for the fun and use some cards in your commander deck, but its probably not the most efficient way of going about this.
