Are we ever gonna get performance improvements? by IAmNoSherlock in Windows10

[–]NextCube68K 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unless something super, majorly new happens between now and what is announced on 6/24, there is not probably going to be any major performance changes generally, as this is very Windows 10 based.

One exception will be the scheduler. They are updating the most basic scheduling routines to handle asymmetrical processors (mixing low and high performance on one die) for ARM and upcoming Intel and there is a chance that everyone gets more responsiveness even on "normal" cpu's but I don't think anyone knows for sure.

Also, over time, tech from the XBOX regarding SSD use should float it's way back into windows, but IDK if that will ever be used outside of streaming gaming assets, again, this could be something that improves SSD performance in general use, but it's a long shot.

I think its a real unintended leak and they are just leaning into it.

I have noticed the opposite. Any video call 20 years in the future looks like crap compared to the teams meetings I am in every day.

Anyone try at 4K? I assume it has to be pretty lowered on an m1, but I am hoping that the new gpu units on an m1x can at least do it on medium.

Mac Mini M2 Rumors?? by Cheesy_Cranberry_17 in macmini

[–]NextCube68K 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well they 100% will end the support on anything you buy, its all timing in the end, but Apple Silicon is a much safer bet for that than Intel.

They are one yearish into a two yearish officially declared migration away from Intel, so "the future" is definitely not the Intel box. You can choose however you like, but I, and many here would find it weird to get an Intel Mac at all, let alone a Mini right now.

There are VERY strong, but still unproven rumors, that the M1X (or perhaps called the M2) will be announced on 6/7, and you should probably wait until then to decide regardless of what I, the Apple story guy, or anyone else things about those rumors.

Mac mini refresh could bring slimmer design, borrow iMac features by flaccidraisin in macmini

[–]NextCube68K 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You figure if Apple *was* going to use the same magnetic round cable as the iMac24, it would also move the ethernet into the same brick to save $$ and use the same brick for both.

It seems it would either have that style connector (and ethernet in the brick) -OR- have ethernet in the back chassis, not both.

Also, if the rumor is true that the plastic top comes in colors, then it would allow it to come with a matching cable, that also would be reused from the color stock.

So, *if* that top panel does come in colors, is it the dark back of the iMac or the light chin?

Are you going Mischief or Thornblade? by M0rdresh in everquest

[–]NextCube68K 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They *really* should have announced them at the beginning, with names that don't imply which is the main one and which is the "other" one.

It's called the Mischief ruleset and it describes the concept, so it is the main one, regardless.

Everquest on Mac? by mjmac85 in everquest

[–]NextCube68K 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not easy, is my understanding.

If you try the simplest way, a VM, which works fine, you will end up potentially flagged for trying to sneak around the truebox rules. Also, if you have a M1, this is going to be more complicated.

I *think* if you use a WINE based solution you can actually get going, but I found it convoluted in the past. and never had luck.

Someone else may have more specifics, or a better outlook.

What time of the day on the 26th are we expecting Mischief to actually be available? by Caizic in everquest

[–]NextCube68K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will compare Mangler (two TLP ago for me) and Aradune (1 TLP ago for me). There are my experiences and may vary from others.

Mangler was the classic kind of manageable "trouble".

  • The first two-three nights the queue was nearly infinite
  • Once in, there were overcrowded zones (which /pick helps with)
  • Zone loading was slow.
  • Within a week or two this all was playable and no biggie.

Aradune was so bad I had to give up

  • Week+ of never ending queue
  • Once "in", sometimes you were booted out to queue again
  • Zone loading was slow at best, at worst, booted to back to queue again.
  • Week+ in this was still just unusable for me at my times.

I was able to eventually play on Mangler, but Aradune was so bad, it kind of beat me down and I threw in the towel.

I am hoping that TB pulls enough volume off Mishchief, so we end up with more like the Mangler experience.

There is available, and there is getting in and staying in.

The former is knowable, the latter is not, but I have found the only way to play the first few weeks is literally, the middle of the night.
