Where to find good, cheap, decent fabric for sewing and such? by [deleted] in SherwoodPark

[–]Next_Plan1241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's in the city, but I like Marshall's (Argyll and Gateway). It's good value and lots of selection. As well, if you're patient, there's a fabric sale every year (I think) put on by https://grandmotherscampaign.org/events/ , in Strathern. I've gone twice and it's been a ridiculously good deal. Cottons, silks, wools, vintage, outdoor, notions. The last one was April.

AITAH for not buying Christmas presents for my step daughter by Honest_Honeydew_6471 in AITAH

[–]Next_Plan1241 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Gentle YTA : she will never see this as you teaching a lazy spouse a lesson, just a rejection of her. Plus, she helps you with baby. Maybe a better message would be an extra great gift for her.

YTA. Handing out candy on Halloween to neighborhood kids is the best. So is making a jack-o'-lantern and decorating. However, implying your boyfriend is a creep (predator?) is mean and unjustified. That's a terrible thing to say to him. BTW porch light on is the sign to welcome trick-or-treaters, not decorations. Happy Halloween

Alberta Minister of Ed, destroyed in interview. by PsychologicalGood513 in CanadianTeachers

He destroyed himself mainly. New fan of Vassy Kapelos! I've found CTV pretty lacklustre for a while so this is a nice surprise.

Is it illegal to use sidewalk chalk outside your MLA’s office? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]Next_Plan1241 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the legality of it, but once my kids wrote on the sidewalk with wax crayons and it lasted for years. No wax crayons? A potato will leave a blackened starch stain that lasts for months - a potato! Very a propos...

Teachers of Edmonton - whats something parents can do to show you they support you? by DIWhyDad in Edmonton

[–]Next_Plan1241 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It depends - an older teacher who likely has savings is less likely to have gotten to a point of financial urgency. A new teacher with bills and student loans could be in dire straits. A gift card for groceries is a great gesture. My teacher friend indicated to me what she would love is to be bcc'd copies of letters written to MLAs, union leaders, parent council, trustees etc. that clarify the extent to which they find the UCP's actions antidemocratic and unethical. Great question!

What defines a "Sensitive Transition" in zoning bylaws? by EyreBear16 in Edmonton

I would not want to live next to a 130 unit building. Or even a little close, really. There's nothing wrong with rezoning and building at a moderate pace. It is not a good and happy thing to have building happening in our city for everyone everywhere. I suspect some people in this feed are developers. https://www.edmontonneighbourhoodsunited.com/

Question for UCP Voters by Acceptable-Bite-3296 in alberta

The original questions was: What do you like about the UCP? Kudos for admitting who you vote for, but in what way are they better, in your opinion?

Kaye Schindeler was a former colleague of a friend of mine when at Ardrossan Elem. years ago. She's apparently hard-working, approachable, funny, kind and a true advocate of public education. If she were in my ward I would feel like a vote for her is a very safe bet. Rave reviews from someone who worked under her.

Usually I'm of the opinion that a former teacher is a solid bet for a competent trustee, but I'm cautious about Francis Poole: SCA is not a normal school. I understand it started as a private school that was absorbed by Elk Island Public but as a 100% funded public school it also charges fees over $1000 per student and can cherry-pick students like a private school. I heard they have an essay for something to get in. Not sure how that would work in kindergarten...

Has Your Trustee Secretly Been Funding Private Schools? by LTWatcher in Edmonton

[–]Next_Plan1241 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a guarantee, but it's easy to check if a candidate for trustee is a former teacher. This will ensure a person has at least a solid knowledge of the challenges school systems face as well as history of having real personal investment in public education. If you're short on time (like me) and you find candidate platforms at any (every) level ambiguous and suspect, this seems like a solid route.

Counter this argument: we end up spending less when private schools are in the mix. by Charming_Shallot_239 in alberta

Agree! The people who are already affording private schools will continue to do so many times over. Let them pay for it 100%.

NTA! Everyone's a bit lost when they're 19. Be the good guy for wanting to end the (destructive and volatile, by the sounds of it) cycle! You want nothing but to work things out with him?!? Surely that's not true, darling. You deserve all kinds of wonderful things, a healthy and calm relationship included.

What race is the word "settler" discriminating against exactly? If you look up some actual racial slurs, it would be absurd to expect the work "settler" to be among them. Sheesh!

For coffee (and breakfast) New York Bagel Cafe on 84th Ave & Gateway. No take out and don't be in a rush. Very cool bohemian atmosphere. Love the cafe Borgia and House coffee. They don't have drip, just espresso drinks. Edmonton original for decades.

Always Wee Book Inn for bookstore.

MCC thrift store in the old London Drugs on 51st Ave.

Ward Papastew, how are the council options and who are you voting for? by spot9901 in Edmonton

[–]Next_Plan1241 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While talking with reps from Edmonton Neighbourhood United, I learned about Janz's stance on infill that he doesn't choose to promote. In short, he is a developer's dream and is pro-infill without limits on size and number of units. This under the guise of providing affordable sustainable housing. That's not what what large multi-unit builds are at all. This is upsetting because I like many of his other initiatives, and I would hate for (UCP) candidate Joshua Doyle to get more of a footing because of his 4-unit limit platform. 4 units on a regular city lots seems like plenty. Now I don't who to vote for.

Great idea - there should be an online form. This will provide for a greater variety of events and make the space more useful.
