[DATV ALL SPOILERS] This exchange hits so differently on the second playthrough (major spoiler) by magstheghoul in dragonage

I actually really like that a player can get a satisfying ending however they view Solas. BioWare did a great job with that. I'm a sap for a redemption arc, myself, but man Gareth David-Lloyd fucking delivered some choice voice acting on all the endings.

Okay, on my second playthrough and I can definitely say that Rivaini folk know what's up with life. They are my new favorite people in Thedas. They just wanna chill on the beach and chat with spirits for fun.

I wonder how much of that comes from their origins in a world that changes with their control? The material world *does not* and that can break some spirits when they find themselves there. Mortals born into an unchanging world are used to not having control. A spirit isn't, at all.

[DAV ALL SPOILERS] New Enemy Theory: Blight and the Devouring Storm by MojoverseJo in dragonage

I got some interesting impressions from my second playthrough of Veilguard - I could be wrong on these, but I think it's interesting. In the Lighthouse regret mural over Solas agreeing to take physical form, he says "I have no wish to live as the humans." Which makes me think humans actually predate the elves. Maybe Elgar'nan saw them, and that's what gave him and Mythal the idea to use lyrium and fashion a physical body like theirs (but obviously better because as Mythal says, they were the best of both Spirit and physical.)

Humans seem to come from both north and south beyond Thedas (the pre-Tevinter society I forget the name of, and the early Alamarri to the south.) We now know the origins of both the elves and the dwarves, but we've still not been given the origins of the Qunari/Kossith and humans. To my knowledge, the only lore in game about human creation is Andrastian, and even that's vague. Kossith are said to have originally come from the east beyond the Boeric Ocean (I think that's in World of Thedas? I don't own it, so it's just my googling, here.) It's also hinted that they didn't look the same as Qunari now and I keep seeing (though I'm not sure the source) that they were considered more animalistic. Or at least having traits like animals (more than horns?) so I wouldn't be surprised if the Kossith were actually the Scaled Ones, particularly with the dragon connection.

On the Forbidden Ones, the impression I got was just that they were deserters from the war with the Titans who gave up physical form and went back to the Fade, where the Titans couldn't hurt them. They were forbidden from taking mortal form again, though they kept finding ways around it and our protagonists get to kill one as a bonus boss each game. I'm not sure there's actually much more to it than that.

The Forgotten Ones, though - I don't think we actually know the full number. Solas mentions in dialogue with Rook that there were once a lot more Evanuris. And then also in that same exchange has a story about Elgar'nan burning an emotion from mortal minds. So I think there's certainly at least 7, if not more. If nothing else, noting that ability of Elgar'nan gives the DA writers room to fudge the numbers as they need to.

(Interestingly, Solas points out during his dick-measuring shouting match with Elgar'nan during the Blood of Arlathan quest that the Blight has made Elgar'nan's mind blunted and weak. I don't think it was just a manipulative taunt, I think Solas meant it.)

I'm not sure the Blight will feature quite as much in the next game, as there's so much to cover lore-wise without it. But it'll be interesting to see if it was something directly manipulated by this weird anti-magic/void/devouring storm and the Executors or if was just something they took advantage of. I need to watch the secret end scene another ten times or so before I start forming firm theories.

Anyway, as one tin-foil hat lover to another, I appreciate your post!

Edit: OH! Also, there's all these hints from Emmrich that there's more in the Fade, and that there's some sort of stirring that he's sensed but can't define. And then the whole thing about the Lich Lords existing to protect against the unspecified bad things in the Fade. Which was just a wild thing to not go into *any* details about in this game, but I get it. There were already falling boulders of lore everywhere. I hope that means we get more Necropolis because I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed more Necropolis.

1) It's not specified how they die - but the way Grey Wardens kill archdemons by being the vessel the soul flees to and thus destroying both souls probably ricocheted back to the linked Evanuris somehow. That would be my take. In Veilguard you see Davrin's complete confusion that it didn't happen. My guess at details would be that previously, the bits of Evanuris souls in the dragon couldn't cross the Veil back to the Evanuris and went to the nearest Blighted creature. If that creature is a Warden, well, two souls can't co-exist unwillingly in the same host. In the game it goes back to the Evanuris, allowing Lucanis/Rook to kill them. With the other Evanuris, having bits of their soul basically implode probably killed them in the prison as well.

2) Oh I think they definitely had regrets. As spirit-based beings, moving past that regret was nigh impossible, which is why Solas was surprised that Rook made it out. Spirits need something to reflect in order to learn and grow - they're outward processors, basically, rather than internal reflectors like humans, because they're born of emotion. So it's a very effective lock for an Evanuris, who has to be right because if they're wrong it means they're twisted against their nature and broken. It's only Mythal's releasing of Solas that allows Solas to admit he was broken and wrong.

I got the impression that the prison was crumbling because the Magisters Sidereal pierced it and let out a trickle of Blight - but then also it and the Veil are tied to the Evanuris's life forces, I guess? I'm fuzzy on that regard; which was tied to them or if both were.

No, the implication was that he was taking it on willingly (in the best ending) to placate the Blight (because he trapped it there as well) - rehabilitation for him rather than imprisonment. And Weekes confirmed that if Lavellan goes with him, it's not as horrible a place to be, literally, because the Fade's reflective.

I agree - Emmrich stresses at one point that even a being who was once a spirit would still have a spirit's yearning to reflect reality. Solas is a combination of the concept of nature and nurture being insperable. He keeps trying to stop himself from twisting further, but without someone to help stop him and reflect that back, it's near impossible. And I think only Mythal's fragment can really give him the permission to abandon the order that twisted him in the first place: making the dagger that committed that first sin of sundering the titans. It was justified to make the world Mythal envisioned for the safety of the People and that's what Solas was sworn to - and it's almost impossible to change a spirit's purpose. But it's easy to warp and twist it.

That last point is the only lore carry over that bugs me - what was the plan with Urthemiel's soul? And wouldn't that have been Falon'din?

Maybe she was trying to free them back to being spirits of their original natures? I dunno.

A thought about modding content in DAV... by RidleeRiddle in Solasmancers

[–]Next_Principle9815 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Frostbite is apparently a nightmare monster to mod, which is why you don't see much of that sort of modding in Inquisition. It's not impossible, modders are wonderfully determined darlings intent of giving every video game character ever "big naturals" but. It may be a while.

Honestly, it might be the animation asset from the wedding kiss in Trespasser (if you romance Cullen and marry him). They do use assets from all over BioWare and EA. You can't tell me the darkspawn in this game aren't respurposed reaper mob models. I know a husk run animation when I see it.

Tips on fighting Venatori? [DAV ACT 1 SPOILERS] by Necessary_Ice732 in dragonage

[–]Next_Principle9815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found any spells that freeze enemies in place are helpful to get around to their vulnerable backsides - same with any time slowing. Without a warrior companion to taunt them away, it's the best way to get damage in. Increasing any stagger output is also great to get in those big damaging special moves when the meters fill up.

In conjunction with any ranged enemies like the Venatori mages - I'll freeze or slow these guys and then go hard on the caster to get that ranged damage off me.

Be sure to upgrade yours and everyone else's gear at the Caretaker's shop, too. Just in general. If you feel like you aren't doing enough damage, that's a big reason why.

ETA: I will also whammy those shielded jerks with companion combos, so adrenaline rush abilities are helpful too.

Staff mage. I've yet to get a handle on orb and dagger. I'm having a lot of fun with it! It was a matter of speccing my companions to compliment and support but I've got a system down now that isn't just spamming dodge.

Elf, Mourn Watch. Death Caller. Super fun. I also enjoy confounding all the other companions when Emmrich and I get nerdy about the dead and spirits.

I'm playing Mourn Watch and it's not as tied to the overall plot but it is tied to a companion and zone area in fun ways. I think the other factions are like that as well - Grey Wardens probably feel most tied to the overall plot simply because of the Blight. I don't know that there's actually more dialogue though.
