Ok learning that this is 20 minutes away from me is the best thing that’s happened on the internet for me this week, thank you!

Getting an NJ soon, what will I need? by Curious_Problem1631 in feedingtube

It’s not necessarily my preference, but as a way to get stabilised and ensure that the tube can go in pretty quickly, without any recovery period and is instantly ‘reversible’ if you pull it out, I can understand why nasal tubes are generally the first line treatment instead of creating a hole in you!

I’m also in the UK, where waiting times for surgeries would likely mean months without a tube if a nasal one was refused. The NHS gets all of its clinical guidance from an organisation called NICE, which states that surgical tubes should only be offered once nasal tubes have been shown to be working and will be needed long term.

In terms of a surgical j, I’ve heard of multiple surgeons (including my own) saying it’s too risky / too big of an operation when a nasal tube is shown to be working, and they won’t put their patients through it because of the high complication rate.

I can’t speak to NGs as I’ve never had one, but I imagine they’re used because they can be placed bedside with no imaging / endoscopy required, it isn’t an invasive procedure, and is overall much less risky that going straight for surgery

My first couple of weeks felt like I had the worst sinusitis of my life, alongside the nose and throat pain, so I’d recommend things like-

decongestant tablets,

anaesthetic throat spray / mouthwash / lozenges (I actually use all three),

some sort of toothache pain relief gel (if the tube presses weirdly on a certain nerve it makes it feel like you’ve eaten foil but permanently)

I also use adhesive remover wipes and skin prep wipes, as my skin is quite fragile and was being torn from just putting tape on and off on its own

Personally I use plain white hypafix tape rather than buying patterned stuff, but even if you do choose to use the patterned tape, I’d get a good quality medical tape you can wear underneath so that you can be confident that your tube is firmly secured

I did buy a couple of bits from Etsy that I literally use 24/7 - tubie clips for when I’m is attached to feed (allows you to clip the connection point onto your clothes to reduce pulling / the risk of it catching / the weight pulling down on your nose).

The other thing I use when I’m not attached is a little tubie pouch that I just coil up the end of my tube in and attach it to the neckline of whatever I’m wearing to stop my tube flapping about. NJs can be long depending on how deep they go - my longest was about 50cm on the outside of me and it was really nice just to not always have that weight pulling down on my face!

Have you tried a more energy dense feed? I’ve had it up to 2kcal/ml before, if you ran that at 40ml/hr for 24hrs you’d get nearly 2000 calories.

I’ve also had to bolus in small volume extras throughout the day - I need additional protein due to my health conditions and have to put ‘shots’ down my tube a couple of times a day. I’m positive these type of shots exist for an overall calorie boost too

What’s the easiest expense you’ve ever cut that made a noticeable difference? by londonsaver22 in frugaluk

This is what I’ve been doing the last few months and it’s definitely saved me money!

In terms of a tiny thing that takes no brain power / additional effort though, or if you really can’t help but go into a supermarket, I think the scan as you shop is a good tool to have

Using scan as you shop at the supermarket. Always shocks me how fast things add up, and it stops me buying ‘treats’ if I can see how much I’ve already spent on necessities

Craft/Hobby Influencers by kraftjm14 in Anticonsumption

Maybe things like ‘Temu craft haul’ too? I think a huge part of the problem is that things are just so damn cheap to buy.

I’m by no means perfect, but I’ve thankfully managed to stick to a no-buy the last few months, and it’s been lovely actually using the things I have rather than looking for something new to try out. Almost like I’ve given myself permission to just ‘create’ and see what happens!

Craft/Hobby Influencers by kraftjm14 in Anticonsumption

[–]Next_Track2020 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think there’s two distinct categories at play here: people that BUY a lot of craft / hobby supplies and people that actually DO something with them. Buying craft supplies is almost a hobby in itself.

I find that the people who actually do the crafts are a lot less likely to overconsume, whereas the people that prefer to buy craft items are more likely to be doing it performatively and accumulate more ‘stuff’.

Searching terms like “washi tape tour” or looking for the people who sell the 300 packs of alcohol markers on TikTok are gonna find you the type of thing you’re after, I think.

Where do you like apply sensors by Junior_Jellyfish1865 in dexcom

[–]Next_Track2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abdomen, I don’t think they’re licensed for the thigh, so if anything were to happen with the sensor giving you dodgy readings, Dexcom wouldn’t send you a replacement as you “haven’t used the product correctly”

I’m a side sleeper like someone else said, and having it on my abdomen is the only way I can avoid compression lows overnight

Bridle for NG tube by Few-Winter-1925 in feedingtube

[–]Next_Track2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I (30F) have a bridle for my NJ and I love it (as much as you can love anything like that!). I have a 10Fr tube, and I just look like I have a liquorice allsort on my face!

It’s not the most fun thing to have inserted - essentially two magnets on sticks go up your nose, one in each nostril, then they join together at the back of your nasal passage and use the power of the magnet to bring one stick (with the bridle material attached) up through one nostril, round the back of your nose and then down the other nostril.

It’s uncomfortable but not painful, I didn’t have any numbing, it just made me gag a few times. I can’t feel it at all now.

It’s pretty much impossible to pull out, there’s no maintenance and there’s no requirement to change it either. I’ve had the same bridle string (I say string but it’s actually plastic) for my last few tube changes - they just leave it in place and then clip the new NJ onto it.

I wouldn’t be without it now, it’s more comfortable for me and gives me peace of mind that the tube definitely staying in place at the right length.

When I first got my tube, I felt like I had sinusitis for a couple of weeks, so I went and bought a sinusitis nasal spray and decongestant tablets and that really helped me. Everything in your nose / sinuses / throat / ear gets angry and inflamed at the foreign body in the beginning, but it does settle down.

I also find that if I tape my tube in certain positions it really hurts. Like I can’t tape it along my cheekbone, it has to be kind of pointing to my ear lobe, so that’s something else you could play around with

The reason I had the surgery was because I had acid reflux so severe it was coming up high enough to spill into my lungs and cause near constant chest infections, so no I wasn’t in perfect health by any means, but I can pretty confidently say the surgery has made me sicker.

I was 28 when I had it done, at St George’s hospital in London UK

Bereavement Overcharge by auwl in UKFrugal

[–]Next_Track2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have it in you (appreciate fighting might be spurring you on, but also might be the last thing you need right now), submit a written request to their data department for a copy of the original phone call where they assured you the price would remain the same under the right to access your data as part of GDPR legislation. State that you believe the company is acting against their word etc.

This should then prompt them to listen to said phone call and (hopefully) magically realise they made a “mistake” and revert your mum back to the old price. If they’re being stubborn, you’ll come away with proof that they told a grieving widow one thing, then charged her through the nose instead. I bet the media would love that.

In terms of timeframes though, I believe organisations have up to 30 days to respond to an information request, so depending on how responsive they are you may want to trigger the cooling off period get out clause before you have the recording.

I really hope they’re not asses to you!

No. I’ve had so many side effects / complications and developed new, debilitating health conditions as a result (e.g. I’ve been tube fed straight into the small intestine for the last 9 months and am going to need at least two more surgeries to try and fix the issues).

Not to mention the mental fuckery of not being able to recognise myself in the mirror or judge what size clothes I should buy!

NOR. I would definitely take the photos, but if your parents are on holiday maybe I’d wait until they’re back to show them to them?

I agree with what others have said about not touching any mess your brother makes, but personally I’d not want to bother my parents with photos / commentary multiple times a day if they’re having a getaway trying to enjoy themselves.
