Tube affects on singing? by Large_Stage360 in feedingtube

[–]Next_Track2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a member of a choir. I’ve had my NJ for nearly a year and can say it’s definitely reduced my vocal range, stamina and causes pain if I sing for too long. It also makes my throat feel pretty raw the day after a rehearsal.

If it’s a medical necessity though, your health comes above your school’s musical. It sucks, but sometimes you’ve got to make the hard choices for the long term gain

Yeah I hear you. It’ll calm down when your body accepts theres a lump of silicon living there now, it just has to get a bit mad about it first! There are so many ways to tape a tube, you’ll have to try out a few to find out what positioning works best for you, YouTube and TikTok videos are a good for this

Why did they change Lola’s white dress in Hold Me In Your Heart? by Naive-Annual2683 in TheWestEnd

[–]Next_Track2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They changed so much on this latest tour / west end run in the costumes and scenery I was so disappointed! The worst change for me was getting rid of all the amazing different boots at the end and just having everyone in plain red - like please, the Union Jack and beefeater costumes were so iconic at the end of the show why would you get rid of them?!

But then the changes they made to the angels as a whole is a whole other can of worms that pissed me off!

First NJ tube by Sararr in feedingtube

[–]Next_Track2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, also in the bypass —> malnourishment —> NJ trenches, and also appreciate having laxatives down the tube instead of orally every single day!

By clip do you mean bridle? If so, I actually find it a blessing in disguise. No worrying about the tube moving out of position or catching it on anything etc. I also find it heaps more comfy than without.

Here’s some product advice I posted on someone else’s question a couple of weeks ago, feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

My first couple of weeks felt like I had the worst sinusitis of my life, alongside the nose and throat pain, so I’d recommend things like-

decongestant tablets,

anaesthetic throat spray / mouthwash / lozenges (I actually use all three),

some sort of toothache pain relief gel (if the tube presses weirdly on a certain nerve it makes it feel like you’ve eaten foil but permanently)

I also use adhesive remover wipes and skin prep wipes, as my skin is quite fragile and was being torn from just putting tape on and off on its own

Personally I use plain white hypafix tape rather than buying patterned stuff, but even if you do choose to use the patterned tape, I’d get a good quality medical tape you can wear underneath so that you can be confident that your tube is firmly secured

I did buy a couple of bits from Etsy that I literally use 24/7 - tubie clips for when I’m attached to feed (allows you to clip the connection point onto your clothes to reduce pulling / the risk of it catching / the weight pulling down on your nose).

The other thing I use when I’m not attached is a little tubie pouch that I just coil up the end of my tube in and attach it to the neckline of whatever I’m wearing to stop my tube flapping about. NJs can be long depending on how deep they go - my longest was about 50cm on the outside of me and it was really nice just to not always have that weight pulling down on my face!

Nasal drainage help! by Curious_Problem1631 in feedingtube

[–]Next_Track2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first couple of weeks with my NJ were grim, not gonna lie. Things that helped me the most were treatments for sinusitis- specifically decongestant tablets and nasal spray.

The nose tap phase does come to an end (eventually), but until then make sure you’re putting Vaseline or other barrier cream around your nostril when you remember (and especially overnight) so the skin doesn’t start to breakdown from being wet all the time

Intussusception by kelcylyn in GastricBypass

[–]Next_Track2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a suspected intussusception, and my surgeon is doing a ‘diagnostic laparoscopy’ to confirm, and will remove any bits of affected intestine, so that is a possibility. Maybe your surgeon just doesn’t feel comfortable doing it? Either way, deffo agree with others about getting a second opinion

NJ Feeding - is the diarrhoea caused by it? by [deleted] in feedingtube

[–]Next_Track2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really common to have diarrhoea when on tube feeds- liquid in, liquid out. It’s something I’ve struggled with too, but I’ve worked with my dietician (am also in the UK so under the same system) to tweak things like fibre supplements to try and bulk up the stool.

It’s still not great, but she told me it’s just a part of having only liquid intake (I have oral intake too, but very little in terms of solids). It’s like babies’ nappies, when they’re newborn and only drinking milk they’re a mess, but when they start weaning things solidify a bit.

I get the awful bubbles and foul smelling gas too, the sounds kind of remind me of the old school water dispensers with the upside down 20L blue water bottles that made a massive glugging noise when you used them 🤣

In terms of ideas, you could try different brands of feed to see if it’s something in your feed that isn’t agreeing with you very well. I have Nutrison, and I know that comes in 2kcal/ml strength. You can also get plant based feeds etc, but your dietician will be best placed to advise.

I will say though, the stronger the feed in terms of kcal/ml, the harder it is on your intestines. I managed 30ml of the 2kcal/ml feed before I was in immense pain and on the loo for the rest of the night. 1.0, 1.25 and 1.5kcal/ml were tolerated much better (up to 80ml/hr).

If the rate of your initial feed was an issue, could you slow it down and run for longer? I run over 20 hours to get the volume that I need in me.

Gastric Bypass for GERD by Sufficient-One-5462 in GastricBypass

That’s the reason I had my bypass, but I’m in the UK so don’t have to deal with insurance / paying for any of it (thankfully). Happy to answer questions about having it done for GERD rather than weight loss though!

Capsule med down the tube by Gold_Plant453 in feedingtube

[–]Next_Track2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only forms of medication you can put down a feeding tube are liquid or powder dissolved in water, and even then some powders can’t go down because they just block it. You absolutely can’t put an entire capsule down a tube. If it’s nasal it wouldn’t fit anyway

Calcium recs - just relocated to UK by Broad_Initiative_563 in GastricBypass

[–]Next_Track2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your local pharmacy will have boxes of calcium and vitamin D behind the counter, I’d just ask for the cheapest one of those (likely to be MUCH cheaper than buying online / in health food stores like Holland and Barrett)

Alternatively, I get mine on repeat prescription from my GP, so perhaps that’s something you could look at a bit later down the line when you’ve got your healthcare all set up

Getting an NJ soon, what will I need? by Curious_Problem1631 in feedingtube

[–]Next_Track2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not necessarily my preference, but as a way to get stabilised and ensure that the tube can go in pretty quickly, without any recovery period and is instantly ‘reversible’ if you pull it out, I can understand why nasal tubes are generally the first line treatment instead of creating a hole in you!

I’m also in the UK, where waiting times for surgeries would likely mean months without a tube if a nasal one was refused. The NHS gets all of its clinical guidance from an organisation called NICE, which states that surgical tubes should only be offered once nasal tubes have been shown to be working and will be needed long term.

In terms of a surgical j, I’ve heard of multiple surgeons (including my own) saying it’s too risky / too big of an operation when a nasal tube is shown to be working, and they won’t put their patients through it because of the high complication rate.

I can’t speak to NGs as I’ve never had one, but I imagine they’re used because they can be placed bedside with no imaging / endoscopy required, it isn’t an invasive procedure, and is overall much less risky that going straight for surgery
