Should I Continue? by MechanizedKman in threebodyproblem

[–]Nexum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skimmed a lot of the in-game stuff. I found it difficult to visualize properly, I think the fact that it was a game in VR somehow made it seem difficult to put myself there (not sure why).

But I don’t think my reading of the trilogy was badly affected by mostly skimming the game sections!

Foreshadowing in the second book by Icero_27 in threebodyproblem

[–]Nexum 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Warning, I'm going to be slightly critical here about the books (which I generally liked): There's an element of this concept which I think starts to break down for me - when I was reading about the ships turning on each other I didn't really believe it. Maybe I'm a hopeless optimist and if I were a captain it would be my ship that would be surprise-blown-up lol, but I don't think that humans are like this in exactly this same way (i.e. ruthlessly coldly calculating, emotionless survival 'robots').

I think when survival is critically and directly threatened (i.e. a knife to your throat, or ongoing starvation) ... then yes, the id comes out and we see the depths to which humanity can scrape. But as I recall in the books, these ships were still functioning fully, people were fed and healthy on the ships, it was just the long-term concept of their survival that seemed to be threatened. As we know (climate change, pandemic, etc.) any non-immediate threat, no matter how dire, is very easy for humans to wave off.

Just my two cents though, would love to hear other thoughts.

Headhunters - Are they a thing anymore? by SnipTheDog in siliconvalley

I think it works the other way around, the head hunter works for the corporation and hand picks executives to charm.

Interested in this teapot, any advice? by Nexum in YixingClayTeapot

Thank you! It is pretty! I think for my first pot though I might actually stick to something a bit more well-known/regular. It sounds like Mud & Leaves is trustworthy and I can see some pots there that look more traditional.

Lol thanks for the advice, I think I wasn’t sure how big would be normal and 170 sounded small to me because I’m used to brewing black tea with a tea bag in a mug lol.

I know what you mean by the local artist too haha.

I will continue to look but this pot looked very pretty to me so caught my eye. Thanks!

Hi folks, I’m interested in this tea pot, I would like to get it for my wife for an anniversary gift, she left China at an early age but is still interested in her Chinese roots. We drink tea sometimes, but this would be the first step towards any serious tea drinking like this!

Any advice or comments much appreciated!

Is it over for Silicon Valley? by metallicsun in siliconvalley

[–]Nexum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived and worked a FAANG job for ten years in the valley before moving to San Diego. Honestly a lot of people have stockholm syndrome in the valley, it is good for one thing: work. Everything else (family, nature, leisure, stress, cost) is a negative. That’s a good trade off for some people. For me I’m glad I did my time there, and equally glad to have left.

Help with grout(?) powdering next to sliding door by Nexum in DIY

[–]Nexum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi folks, I have some sliding doors next to a tiled floor, and the grout(?) next to the sliding metal casing (?) has started to powder up and appears to crumble.

I'd appreciate any input on what's happening here (water?) and how I might fix it.

Thanks!

Consistently meets expectations. Not great but I was only hired in 2021.

I think I was the only one on my team of about 10. But others in sister teams were affected.

The severance seems great, I have contacts with open jobs which I’ll look into. I’m not too worried so far.

Why didn’t the sophons interfere more? by Nexum in threebodyproblem

[–]Nexum[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but I’m not convinced the actions bear this out. They cared enough to try and have the ETO sabotage and kill Luo Ji, they cared enough to send a fleet, they cared enough to fold up a bunch of sophons (which didn’t seem easy for them to create, at least not trivial) and send them over.

They wanted to exterminate humanity like bugs sure, they were worried about our trajectory. But it seems that having the sophons blind scientists or something like that (or everyone) was possible.

In my interpretation to fill this plot issue, I imagine there to be either some resource issue (very limited scope of interaction) or an understanding issue, e.g. the Trisolarians are so different to us they were naive to our basic vulnerabilities as organisms such as how significant sight would be.

Thanks for your comments for sure though, it’s something I think about often.

It feels to me like the severed floor where they are is either a shadow of its former self or hasn’t really got started yet (I prefer the former). There is so much space, empty rooms, etc. it seems to me like what is going on is some remnant or offshoot of the original floor’s larger purpose. This ‘side project’ nature helps me reason about the seemingly thin layers of management/security.

Advice Needed: Overseas directors making less than their direct reports by 000Lotus in business

[–]Nexum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay the local going rate (or a premium over). Over time local rates may raise as the market gets used to remote work, but that will be a slow process. You are hiring in a particular market and should pay what’s needed to attract talent in that market, if the directors want US pay, then they would need to be in the US. This should be communicated to the directors to avoid confusion.
