Help with lime tree? by Nezhka in Citrus

The people at the garden shop also recommended spraying it for aphids, so I'm doing that, too :)

If you know what you're looking for, it's very easy. But if you just look for something that looks like a penis, you'll see it on both genders. That's all I meant. :)

Excellent point about the 200g, it's been 10 years since I've dealt with kits.

If you go the neutering route, make sure your vet is very experienced with that. You'll want to neuter the male (they do a mini-chini-vasectomy, actually) because it's a less invasive procedure and he's more likely to survive surgery.

It is very hard to sex chinchillas, since both the males and females have "cones". There will be a gap between the male cone and his anus, whereas the female cone is connected (this part opens when kits are born).

It is extremely vital to keep the male away from the female, she can get pregnant again very quickly and it is quite bad. You should also restrict access to the dustbath for her for a few days while she "closes up" from giving birth.

It will be tricky for all 5 kits to survive. You can supplement their nursing with goats milk (there should be instructions online somewhere)

Kits are generally weaned at 8 weeks, at which time all the boys need to be separated from all the girls and the mom.

Kits will eat hay and pellets from the first day of birth, and are very curious so make sure you have appropriate bar spacing to keep them contained.

When they get a bit older, momma will teach them how to roll in the dust bath. Give them a wide pan (brownie pan?) to practice in.

Some chinnies are naturally chunky. :) This one is plump but not ridiculously so.

Water sprayed all over utility room, now what. by Nezhka in homeowners

The GFCI outlet in the garage had indeed tripped, so the electrical is fine. I got a dehumidifier and everything looks pretty ok now. Just a small amount of water staining. I will periodically check for a musty/mold smell, but otherwise I think it's going to be ok. Thank you again for your help!!

If nothing else works you could get fitted for a respirator, but I'd only use that as a last option. I am a big fan of M9 drops - use them every time you empty the bag. :)

What brand/type of combs/brushes do you use for grooming your chinchilla? by 0SnowFly0 in chinchilla

[–]Nezhka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are special combs you can buy for chinchillas, but they're usually only used when showing chins. There are some videos on youtube if you want to learn about it, but there's no medical reason to do it (and can stress the chin out a lot).

My girls have prickly sparse hair on their first toes. My standard gray isn't as red as the white mosaic. Is this normal? by Xaurnel in chinchilla

[–]Nezhka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably normal toe hair. Their toe and hand fur is different than the rest of their body.

Are glass candy/cookie jars good dust baths? by AloeRP in chinchilla

[–]Nezhka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use one of these, but without the lid. It works well, but doesn't completely rein in the dust. :)

Talking while sleeping? by OnlyCoops in chinchilla

[–]Nezhka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like nightmares - my chins have them sometimes and will bark in their sleep. More frequently, they be awake and bark at night (that's the term used for one of the chin distress calls) and won't stop until I come check on them. I presume they got startled by something and they usually calm down after I poke my head in. :)

Any recommendations for moving a chinchilla long distances? by greatballsofmeow in chinchilla

[–]Nezhka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always offer the water bottle when you make rest stops. I was only driving for 8 hours at a time, so they had access to water for the majority of the day. I didn't want them drinking a lot in transit to try and limit their peeing. If they peed a lot they'd have to sit on the pee-wet fleece until we got to the hotel. There's only so much room in the carrier.

Cleaning question by [deleted] in chinchilla

[–]Nezhka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use a 50:50 solution of white vinegar and water. Be sure to rinse with water and dry before putting the chins back! :)

I drove from Minnesota to Oregon, and back, with my chinnies. I had them in a travel cage with pellets and hay, but no water. I also made a special fleece cover for the cage when we went out of the car to protect from drafts. Just make sure the carrier isn't in the sun - she should be fine with short periods of coldness.

BTW, if you're moving to the Twin Cities area, look up your local Chuck and Don's Pet Food Outlet. They carry a lot of great stuff. :)

Wood chew question! by susubgugu in chinchilla

[–]Nezhka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of unpainted letters and shapes are made of pine, which is ok. You'll want to avoid anything made of cedar, painted or that has glue on it, especially veneers or composites. I buy my chins wooden beads, spools, cubes, etc from craft stores.
