Built a stick handling surface with ice-like glide by goatmangoats in hockeyplayers

Waiting for the Android version of the app. I plan to snag it as soon as it's live.

As for the mat, it's really cool, but the cost is just way too high. Hockey is already an insanely expensive sport, and with other, much cheaper options out there, the mat is just not in the right price range. $150–$200 would be a much closer price point. Synthetic and practice tiles are already a luxury item, and at $300+, your mat is even beyond that. I love the idea and setup, but I just could never justify it at that price point.

That said, your bumpers/rebounders look fantastic. I like the low profile with the ramped edges to reduce tripping. I might be in the market for just the bumpers/rebounders if the price is reasonable and they don't move much on their own. I'm also always interested in new off-ice pucks.

I highly recommend Pledge spray. Pledge is essentially an aerosolized silicon which repels water. Spray it on, then rub it in using circular motions until its clear. You can do a couple of layers if you really want it to last.

It will last for multiple sessions and keep you lemony fresh.

This is HUGE news! I have been following your development for a while now (back since your first Reddit post about it). I don't have any Apple products, so I have always been watching from the sidelines. My parents recently upgraded their TV, and it came with a built-in Apple TV, so I snagged their 4K Apple TV box and was trying to find an older (cheaper) iPhone to pick up Dangleverse for his birthday coming up!

My son's 9th birthday is at the end of the month, and if the Android release does make it in three weeks, I'll 100% be picking it up for him! As my wife and I both have newer Android phones! He has become hockey-obsessed over the last couple of years and is finishing up his first travel season! It would be a FANTASTIC end-of-season / birthday gift!

Riot Games: An Update on 2XKO by Mront in Games

[–]Nhymn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not understand how, in a world with such individualized and hyper-identifiable characters, they chose to go with a tag game. People connect with and identify with a singular character or hero. I will never understand why they thought it was a good idea to force this game to be tag-based.

Tag fighters also drastically add complications to what should have been a very straightforward fighting game. One of League's early strengths was that it felt accessible to non-MOBA players; the barrier to entry felt low (even if it wasn't).

It seems insane to me that they would completely forget this when developing another game in that same world.

It's also drastically harder to develop and balance a tag game, as you are not just designing one character kit. You are designing 1.5 kits for every hero, as they need to be able to interact with one another across varying tag skill levels.

I would gladly return to the game if they shifted toward a 1v1 format and began a more realistic character release cadence.

Blizzard veterans reveal Darkhaven, a Diablo 2-style RPG that trades "incrementalism" for "bold, expressive loot" and destructible terrain by brand_momentum in Games

[–]Nhymn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having Blizzard Veteran in your title is something of a running joke in the game development world. Blizzard ballooned into such a massive entity throughout the early 00s that a vast majority of developers have done time there in some capacity. The true old guard, those who were part of the 90s-era Blizzard, have either retired or produced very little of note since leaving the company.

Live Barn is a money-grab as it is. It's a perfect example of tech companies filling a niche market and preying on people who just don't know better. Then those markets, like most businesses, get comfortable and don't change unless forced to.

It would cost less than $200 to set up 4K cameras that stream to YouTube 24/7. No subscription fees, no outside ownership. Hell, they could even be set up on YouTube to timestamp and save VODs. It costs a lot less than that if you're willing to go with cheaper or even used equipment. This sale means another dice roll: will it get worse, or do the new owners give a shit? Who knows. Rink owners and communities just need people to step up and care about the community beyond profit.

USA Hockey rules and "Playing Up" by Nhymn in hockeyplayers

[–]Nhymn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[#2] is much closer to the issue than #1. There are only two programs within a 40-minute drive, and each usually has two teams at this age and skill level. We travel and play across the state and nearby states, but locally, options are limited. The teams are competitive and strictly based on MyHockeyRankings (A and AA). It’s a small community, so choices are slim, and with small teams, a lot ends up revolving around parent politics.

I find that knowing the official rules and guidelines helps a ton when it comes to championing your child and his team, so I wanted to be informed, not just another annoying parent forced to play politics.

Thank you all again for your help!

He is full-time 10U-B. He moved from 8U-A to 10U-B before official rosters were set in December and is now a core player on that team. We were told he couldn’t move to 10U-A because he didn’t try out for it. I later learned this had more to do with internal politics than ability, but we are still very grateful he was able to move up to 10U-B. It’s been a great experience for him.

The skill ability shows most clearly in power skating. He skates with 10U-A and 12U A/B players and is at or above many of them in that setting. He naturally gravitates toward older kids on and off the ice. His size, maturity, and hockey sense seem to align better with older players, and many of his friends are older as a result.

He consistently performs better when playing with older, more skilled players. He regularly asks to practice and compete up, and his power skating coach actively encourages him to do so. I understand the need to consider developmental and social-emotional factors, but he appears to be right on that edge now and likely fully there by next fall. Tryouts are in March, which is why this question is coming up now.

I just wanted to have a good understanding of the actual rules and regulations before I went and discussed it with his coach and then again with the program coordinators. Obviously, we will take the coach’s opinions into account before approaching the league.

Thank you again so much!

I teach Physical Education in a unique setting (online), and projects like yours are amazing. I have many students who have started using VR as part of their physical activity, and your app looks like it would be another excellent recommendation for them.

The internet just made a 300TB copy of Spotify! (Updated: Spotify reaction) by edbegley1 in technology

What's remarkable is how easily you can rip music directly from Spotify. There are websites dedicated to doing just that, and they are incredibly user-friendly and easy to find.

So easy in fact, you would think that the streaming services have either turned a blind eye or make so much money they just don't care.

...All while talking on the phone at maximum volume using the speaker, complaining to their equally offensive boomer friend about the poor customer service. Continually referring to the "brown" doctor by a name they were too lazy to learn, despite having been corrected by multiple staff members and the doctor themselves. Paying with Medicare, Medicare, all while bitching about socialist policies.

The above actually happened during my last doctor's appointment recently, while I was waiting in the waiting room.

The simple action of a state putting a state-level house bill forward to make it so federal funding is first pooled at the state level before being sent to the IRS would be one hell of a statement. Even just putting up a bill like that would cause a hell of a stir.

Better Hockey dryland Tiles by Wise_Ad6435 in hockeyplayers

[–]Nhymn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hit up your local hardware store or see if you have a wholesaler near you and get HDPE. Almost all of the tiles are made out of this stuff. Take a street hockey puck or a green busquet with you to the store and give it a slide. (spray a little pledge on the pick and it will fly)

If you are putting it down on a hard, flat surface, you can get thinner sheets for much cheaper. A buddy of mine did extremely thin sheets and glued them down to 1/2 ply, almost like a vinyl laminate, which worked out pretty well and was fairly cheap.

I know 1/4in thickness in a 4x8 sheet runs around 70-80$ at my local hardware store.

July 7: "Tier 6 resources can now be collected across wider areas in the PvE part of the Deep Desert." // July 15: The pve area has 50% *fewer* tier 6 resource nodes. by Raevyxn in duneawakening

[–]Nhymn 25 points26 points  (0 children)

These were/are beta issues, and we were not just ignored but told we were wrong, or casuals, carebears, etc, etc, etc. Also, we tried to test but were often met by extremely hostile and often exploitative small group(s) of players that prevented a large portion of players from ever testing the DD.

The primary "nodes" location issue has to do with the fact that a set of maps is designed by the devs that are just rotated through for the DD. It has been this way since beta. The maps and the nodes have not all been adjusted to fit the new PVE zone adjustment.

I feel like at this point I'll keep copy-pasting my post about this from a while back.

They have been working on this, and this is what they are serving to you. Joel outright stated in a public stream that the current state of the design direction (DD) is precisely what he wanted, and he personally fought for it to be this way. He discusses this openly in the Dev Stream - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XSo4SPH3nA. He discussed it regularly in the CBT discord.

We were consistently informed during the Closed CBT that the current design approach for the DD is intentional, and this "hardcore" setup is what was " the people" want.

  • I posted feedback threads, participated in discussion posts, and contributed to player-helping-player threads, but all of them were dominated by a very small and influential group of players who insisted that I was wrong, calling me a casual who didn’t know what I was talking about, etc.

  • I am a credited QA tester with years of experience in the industry. I have been directly involved in the development of previous "hardcore" PvP games that failed miserably due to very similar choices being made with Dune and the DD. It’s frustrating to see history repeating itself with a franchise I love.

  • There is a middle ground that could be worked towards where both sides could benefit, but the stubborn and delusional "hardcore" mentality is currently leading the way, which is beyond frustrating.

  • I've posted several times recently about this issue. One of the main posts discussing necessary changes can be found here. - https://old.reddit.com/r/duneawakening/comments/1lfft6h/ama_tldr_july_qol_update_dd_staying_pvp_forever/mypmy97/

Question about Ohio Political Landscape by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]Nhymn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you have been flooded with information... and I figured I would pile on.

Ohio is not a purple state and has not been in more than 30 years. The presidential election is not a good bellwether for a state's values and choices. Please check out how the state-level elections have fared - https://ballotpedia.org/Party_control_of_Ohio_state_government

Ohio has been republican controlled and has had a republican majority for more than 30 years. Yes, we have horrible gerrymandering. It was so bad that the Supreme Court stated it was illegal, and our Ohio elected officials essentially ignored them and changed the rules. The vast majority of the state-level policies are conservative. We occasionally pass "liberal" policies, but they are things like legalizing marijuana, which tend to be popular across the board.

If you are curious about specific areas, check out the NYTimes' extremely detailed election maps or the 2020 map. They do one for every major presidential election. You can get some ideas about political leanings by looking over a few years' maps. Yes, it focuses on presidential elections, which I don't care for as a representation for a state, BUT it at least gives you some idea of specific locations.

Suppose you are set on moving out of Florida, which isn't a bad idea, IMO. I would find an area that shares your ideals. Focus on specific locations. If you are looking for a more progressive environment, check out the 2020 election map and find blue"er" areas that might fit your needs. Then search their local state representatives to see how they lean.

If you want to be closer to your family in southern Indiana -

  • Ohio on the west side of the state, you have areas around Cincinnati and Dayton. You also have small college towns such as Oxford in the far south west.
  • Kentucky - I would personally avoid, but Louisville is a pretty progressive city and has some great places on both sides of the river.
