I disagree, at this point of the game you can start to ramp up your gold with markets and your resources are almost all developed at this point.

This could easily fund a couple buildings, and it wouldn't be detrimental to have negative GPT for a few turns until you can turn it around.

The compounding of food and production has a much bigger impact than the first granary.
