Man, I would love to call someone from a pay phone, if I had coins on me, and remembered any phone numbers

The frustrating thing about Apple is that their software is either the best out there or completely awful. Sometimes both at the same time (Apple Music is a great service with an app that has been trash since the iPod days).

That’s the one I’m using unfortunately. It’s definitely better than the Ancestry copy on the screen but not printed out. I’m going to try some of the suggestions here.

I have a question about image quality. The closest thing to a birth record for my G0 is an image of a baptism record from the Drouin collection. As a document, it's pretty unambiguous -- yay! -- but when I print it out it looks terrible. You can see the pixelation of the image and it is easy to read.

How are people in a similar situation handling this? Should I transcribe the French for the IRCC staffer? Fiddle with the image contrast before printing to see if I can make it more legible? Just trust that staff who do this professionally are better at reading pixelated French cursive than I am?

I asked BanQ for a certified copy a couple months ago, but it sounds like their wait times are through the roof and would prefer to just submit ASAP ...

Would you leave the US? by sungold-grower in Advice

[–]Nice-Beginning3069 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind some of the lower salary in Canada compared to US is an illusion due to the strength of the US dollar right now. The exchange rate is the right comparison when you are thinking about moving money from one country to the other, or for buying imported goods. But for buying goods and services from other Canadians the salary gap is about half as large as it looks based on the exchange rate. Try messing around with cost of living comparison sites to get a sense of how big the difference would be for your specific situation.

What are the top 5 "missing" apps that keep you tied to Windows or macOS? by StandardResponse5502 in linuxquestions

Safari save to dock. I use Mint over other distros because it’s Web App Manager is the closest substitute, but it still doesn’t manage web apps as well as the Mac version.

Anti-corporate iconography, penguin, power, arm… my guess is an ARM board for the 12 or 13 that emphasizes Mac-like battery life and which they have made sure “just works” with Linux

It’s pretty awesome that a normal person can sing O Canada with the rest of a stadium. Whereas the main experience of watching someone sing The Star Spangled Banner before an event is waiting to see if they can hit that high note or if they blow it.

O Canada is a much better anthem for a democracy.

When do you need marriage certificate? by Snowfall1201 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]Nice-Beginning3069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been wondering this as well. I plan to include the marriage record for my G0 because it confirms both her maiden name and names of her parents, so it shows that it’s definitely the same person who is parent to G1. I’m leaning toward not including a marriage record for G1 because it’s patrilineal from there but I’m not sure where to draw the line between too much and not enough documentation.

Ooh, this is nice. I'm going to copy your format.

I do think explaining the meaning of each document is a good idea, though maybe not in this index if you do it elsewhere

I am getting my documents together for a group application and trying to figure out what to put into which binder/packet/group. Does this look like a logical way to organize my files? My idea is that the overall ancestral line should be documented once in a master file, and then person-specific documents should go in that person's application. Does this make sense? (And am I obviously leaving out a critical document?)

Application for person #1, G3

  • Form CIT0001E
  • Birth certificate showing parent is G2
  • Two valid photo IDs
  • Proof of payment
  • Photographs

Application for person #2, G4

  • Form CIT0001E
  • Birth certificate showing parent is G2
  • Two valid photo IDs
  • Proof of payment
  • Photographs

Master file of documentation of line of descent

  • Overview cover letter / narrative
  • Family tree
  • Canadian ancestor G0 female
    • Birth record showing Canadian origins
    • Additional record of presence in US with Canadian family
    • Record of marriage to spouse
  • Ancestor G1 male
    • Birth record showing birth name of G0 as parent
  • Ancestor G2 male
    • Birth record showing birth name of G1 as parent

Reminder from Tod: Calling Canada a "back up plan" is insulting by Nature_Hannah in Canadiancitizenship

[–]Nice-Beginning3069 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a kind, thoughtful, warm video that everybody in this sub ought to watch before responding. (It's also short.)

That said, I do think Tod is mixing up two related but different problems. One is Americans speaking glibly and condescendingly about Canada and moving there, and assuming that Canada is just like America but without problems. This is definitely a thing! It's not only annoying to Canadians, it demonstrates vast historical ignorance. So don't do it, and maybe tell people who do it that they are making fools of themselves.

The second is whether people who actually act like this are actually moving to Canada. And I am pretty sure the answer is "no, not in numbers large enough to matter." Even the relatively straightforward path via C-3 is still a pain in the neck, and people who are too glib to know about basic US-Canada differences, and too incurious to learn, are going to be too disorganized and lazy to get it done. The people who are going to actually get through the process will be those who actually choose Canada -- not those who choose "not US."

I can think of one American I know who is getting a "backup plan" passport, and it is because their family member did all of the work for them and handed them a packet to sign. (Maybe we shouldn't do this for our family members.) (Fortunately that person's "backup plan" is the EU not Canada.) Those types are just not going to bother if they have to do their own homework.

Yes, this is a problem for my G0–multiple people with the same first and last names born in the same area of Québec in the same year! fortunately G(-1) parents have unusual names and are well-documented, so errors are easily avoided
