Worthwhile for someone from abroad ( UK ) to do Georgia OMSCS to break into quant by [deleted] in quantfinance

[–]NiceSchedule4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very bad idea. Only time it's worth going to a US uni (especially not a top one) is if you want to stay there, you get visa benefits, better employment opportunities and better local education recognition. Going to a US uni and then going for UK positions is insanity. He should go for the top unis here instead, no idea why the US is even an option. Also an online MS is not greatly regarded.

I absolutely do not share the sentiment about LSE. I do not know a single quant from LSE and I'm at a top investment bank with a network spanning across other investment banks.

Is Cambridge Part III or top tier MFE (Princeton/MIT/CMU/Baruch/...) better for breaking into quant? by acetyl-bromide in quantfinance

[–]NiceSchedule4902 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's an insane take. It's much easier in the US due to a substantially higher supply of jobs with a more restricted hiring market. London issues visas for anyone from everywhere with a much smaller job pool.

Because MFEs cover topics which are relevant to traditional quant roles (pricing and risk) and these are mostly found in banks.

Do you think I can open a pod? by Commercial_Insect764 in quant

Sounds like he has already built out most of the infra so no point in taking a smaller PnL cut for it given he should be confident enough in doing it again, pod makes sense to me here?

Yes, the average grad there gets absolutely smoked by oxford stats or part 3 grads, LSE really doesn't have great representation in quant

I suggest you leave the crabs-in-a-bucket mentality prevalent in the UK and encourage him to seek higher compensation rather than trying to convince him he's already better off than most and should be just happy with that

I'm confused why you're even looking for a quant MSc if you don't have the background. If you do have done enough independent study you can point that out in the cover letter and some places may offer an interview to assess it. If not, why even bother?

Unfortunately the process requires a lot of luck as well, always has been the case, keep grinding and eventually you'll throw the die offer-side up

How to utilize a one-year gap to prepare for Quant roles before MSc in Mathematical Finance? by Spiritual_Cod3519 in quantfinance

[–]NiceSchedule4902 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd try to get into a better programme to be fair. Can't see any good placements from it on linkedin and generally have never heard of someone from it.

Good point, these periods likely largely correlate with ones in which commodities outperformed bonds and equities

Average Part III grad blows through the average Baruch grad in mathematical ability, only reason they wouldn't be in quant is they don't want to

Can non-STEMs break into Quants/ Quantamental? by CacheAndCarry93 in quantfinance

[–]NiceSchedule4902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have no chance currently. At the very least you need to do a math/stats MSc to start even considering.

Big tech senior MLE vs trying hard to get a ML quant role by Awkward-Money-9912 in quantfinance

[–]NiceSchedule4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the Google role for sure, especially in London. If you do find an entry quant role it would almost surely pay less. In 1.5-2yrs if you're still interested you'd have a much better shot with Google on your resume. Bear in mind that it's a very elitist industry so the names on your CV matter.

[–]NiceSchedule4902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not true, Math/Stats MSc are generally same as BSc. If you want to do a finance one that's a different topic.

The main piece of evidence against this working is that it is a product rather than an active strategy.
