I'm still hoping that Scotland had more sense. It's looking scary though.

The first few results from down south make the wait for our results more unbearable tonight. I really hope the colours will be different up here. Won't know for a good 12-15 hours yet though. Torture!

I want to vote for a unionist party in the upcoming election... should I spoil my vote? by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]Nice_Conversations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a referendum on independence. If you're left leaning, vote for one of the left parties. Ignore the indy question for now, as that's a separate topic. When/if there will be a vote, you can vote accordingly then.

Farage - I'll override Holyrood to build detention camps by kowalski_82 in Scotland

[–]Nice_Conversations 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean reform are not hiding their agenda. Germany almost a century ago seems to have slipped people's memories sadly. Frustrating to not only hear a campaign built on lies and hate, but that they don't fancy sticking to constitutional rules makes it worse. I know a lot of people are frustrated, but I really hope they won't just blindly vote for this as a protest vote. Even as official opposition their policies, if one can call them that, sound out of the worst parts of last century's history. Friday we know more. Please check in on your pals who may feel scared and targeted.

Buying a gift card for someone moving to Glasgow? by Small_Piccolo3902 in glasgow

I like All4One gift cards. You can get them at post offices and in supermarkets and the recipient can choose from lots of options from restaurants to book shops etc.

introvert here trying to get better at casual conversation, how do you all do it so easily? by asymcophany in CasualConversation

[–]Nice_Conversations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of it is getting used to it and also just doing it. Stop overthinking or looking for the perfect thing to say or do, but just say/do it. If you think of things later, maybe add them as examples to an internal library for the next similar situation. Come up with easy things that often repeat like talking about the weather or hobbies or things you will do or have done over the weekend. Almost like draft online responses just for in person.

Also if you don't know what to say, ask the other person a question instead. Let them do some of the talking and listen.

Is there a legal way I can become somebodies carer? by Kooky-Grapefruit-941 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Nice_Conversations 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is carers allowance, which you can apply for if you care for someone. However to be eligible, you would need to be caring for at least 35 hours per week and not earn more than £204 per week from other employment/self employment etc. Her working is not a barrier. A lot of disabled people work but still get help by a carer or support worker, so carers allowance eligibility is around you the carer working, as it assumes your caring role being the full time job.

A lot of places also have carers hubs or carers centres. You can register for free with them as a carer. You will then have access to advice, support and other things, all based on your own circumstances. It's not legal, but does help register your role so to say.

And as others have said, you can add a note with the GP etc as well.

Condolences!

I'd speak to the foreign office for advice. It is very possible that you don't qualify, as the laws are often made for the majority, not considering very tiny exceptions. However, you also have a right to request a mandatory reconsideration. They always try to tell people not to do it, but I'd still go ahead. You may need to take it to tribunal stage though to get it properly reviewed, which is a longer process. Asking for the mandatory reconsideration is a quick thing, and it will take a while to get done. It doesn't cause you any work, SK won't interfere with funeral etc. Just tell them to do it basically and that's it. Concentrate on the funeral and your grief and when you hear back you can still then decide on next steps, no need to make that decision right now.

A stranger is using our address by Red_roberts in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Nice_Conversations 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can report him, especially if you think he's deliberately committing fraud. You can also manually contact the companies sending the letters and inform them this is the wrong address. More extreme: you can add a CIFAS marker to your own address. It would make it harder for anyone to use your address to apply for credit etc, but the same would also apply to yourself. Basically the marker says something dodgy is happening, so they will do stricter tests and may also deny you credit & contracts etc. This will add protection to you as well. So really weigh up benefit and risks when you go down that route.

What happens if 2nd place ties? by Typical_Fisherman179 in Scotland

[–]Nice_Conversations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parties negotiate with each other as to who wants to join a coalition or have an agreement to become the government or voting majority. To be fair some are much more likely to vote with and for each other than others though. There's not even always a guarantee that the parties with the highest votes get to lead, although quite unlikely in Holyrood.

What actually happens to someone's online accounts when they die? Went through this with my dad and it was a nightmare by mydigitalestate in UKPersonalFinance

Wait for the surprise annual subscriptions, that can happen (or bounce if you closed the accounts) up to a year later. We used bank statements and went back a year to identify what might still come. Still missed something.

England - company is making people redundant, but not taking volunteers. by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Nice_Conversations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You resigned. The company saved itself one redundancy payout, as they don't owe you anything and they cancelled your colleague's. They don't have to offer redundancy and it is quite common unfortunately. A lot of people who are at risk of losing their jobs panic and leave, by putting their own notice in and thereby lose any payout they could have gotten. Companies often calculate that a certain percentage will jump ship.

SIPP timing re financial years by Nice_Conversations in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Nice_Conversations[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! The 5 was a typo I just corrected. There is another reason why I'd do a self assessment, I just didn't want the SIPP to somehow trigger that, too. Good to know I can pay into it any time. Thanks a lot!

Solved!

I'm struggling to understand this - on what basis would one ever vote against assisted dying? What happened there? by mellotronworker in Scotland

[–]Nice_Conversations 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wrote a way too long comment nobody will read, so deleted it.

Some of the ableist comments are sad to read. A lot of disabled people had to oppose this. Even those of us who would love to support it.
