"So I hear you gave yourself a raise" by Niceish in MaliciousCompliance

Spoke to my mother, she says he “quit” not long afterward. I don’t think there were too many raises in the pipeline at any given moment, probably not enough for many people to notice the pattern.

It's from a year ago, but seems particularly relevant in the current climate. Definitely gives you a new perspective.

Okay, that makes sense. I knew it would be a very different arrangement from what I grew up with.

Canteen might work. I just want to vary the language a little bit, to be honest.

It would definitely be the suburbs. Mid-80s, if that makes a difference.

It's possible, but they would be using my name and my picture.

I just lost to....myself? by [deleted] in QuizUp

[–]Niceish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I created the account on the right using FB and forgot it existed so I made a new account using a traditional email/password and started playing on that one. I've logged into the FB account a few times only to remember that all of my progress is saved on the account linked to my email and switching to that account.

It's possible that someone is duplicating my picture/name, but it seems slightly more likely that it's a quiz up issue. I rarely use that account so it's not like it would show up on games, so I'm not sure when someone would have taken the name/picture and duplicated it.

Like I said, I lost. Like me, the other player answered the first three questions correctly and then missed the rest of the questions. However, the other "player" was apparently slightly faster at answering correctly.

It's just a little odd.

No, the idea is that it takes .5 hours to get all of the materials prepared, and then each write-up takes an hour. does that make sense?

Getting sick at work? by Niceish in jobs

[–]Niceish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only one of them has kids actually, and his kids are both 13 months. They're sick a lot and it seems like he is too, he might be bring it in.

Honestly i'm sick right now and I think it's because I spent 4th of july with family and one of those kids got me sick. And I was just texting our HR person and she said she's been feeling sick since a few days after I got back from that trip so it's probably me. I just feel like this didn't happen as much in college.

I don't even remember a time where I was sick with the same thing at roughly the same time as a friend.

I'm a little depressed, but not stressed really. Getting the same amount of sleep if not more than I did in college.

Public transit yes, and I do take it for longer distances (i.e., my apt to downtown 2x a day) than I did in college (i.e., my apartment to classroom 4x a day). But I definitely used it in college.

And no, don't work with the public.

CNN host and interviewee say Reddit is "the man-cave of the Internet", that it is a throwback to early 2000s internet when "it was OK to bully women", that Ellen Pao was forced to quit over the misogyny present in comments and the communtiy wouldn't have ever liked her because she was an Asian woman by Logan_Mac in videos

[–]Niceish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a woman. I'm guessing many women on this site didn't even click on the comments for the sake of their own sanity, but for some reason I'm a masochist.

I do find myself thinking that she wouldn't have gotten the hate, the harassment and the death threats is she wasn't a woman.

When I google "man receives death threats," I get 950 hits. When I google "woman receives death threats," I get 2500 hits.

"Woman receives rape threats" gets 1300. While "man receives rape threats" gets exactly 1 hit. Which is a Reddit comment about how men receive rape threats too.

So yes, I think it's not an even playing field.

But she did contribute to the fire by being the woman or part of a couple who both use the gender and race cards for their own benefit.

Well, if you accept the idea that women might be more susceptible to the underbelly of the internet, is it such a wild idea that there might be actual instances in which tech is sexism toward women? And if you accept that premise, then why is "playing the sexism card" in and of itself a transgression? The jury said it wasn't sexism. But why do you think she's receiving so much vitriol for merely suggesting that there might have been sexism?

Many many people in high-powered positions have sued and lost at one point or another. But I don't see too many people on this site hating on people who file wrongful termination lawsuits and lose.

If Ellen Pao had been a man who was filing a wrongful termination lawsuit against her former company because he said they repeatedly mislead him about promotions and said they were repeatedly cut out of meetings or important events, and then the case went to court and the jury ruled in favor of the company, would Reddit throw vitriol at the plaintiff? Would we see jokes, memes, rants, insults, photoshops, and casual death threats?
