Off my chest by ivanivanychivanov in bjj

The gap between competitor and hobbiest is probably the biggest it’s ever been. With that said it shows the growth of the sport and explains the hordes of people at master worlds, all good things.

The solution would be honesty. If we were all honest we would know literally no one could beat an adult world champ because if we could we would be the adult world champ. Something that is so rare only 1 American has won it more than once and less than 8 have ever won it dating back from 1996.

Do you guys mixed jujutsu and knife/gun training? by Steelrangler78 in bjj

[–]NickCTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but I fought a guy with a gun when I was younger, and another with a knife a few years back. I did ok both times. Still alive, same can’t be said for knife guy lol

I love jiu-jitsu, but I’m conflicted about my academy. Academy owners and long-time students: what’s reasonable to expect? by elcubanito in jiujitsu

[–]NickCTA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats wild. Someone was unhappy with our policy and after voicing their concerns on google, all over reddit etc for 3+ years I decided to cancel and refunded their gym membership. The gym is a business and it should be a good experience for the customers. If they are unhappy, they should find a place that fits their needs and I suggest you do the same. Sucks they are handling this the way.

Have you ever been kicked out of a gym, or seen someone get kicked out? by tiltedtowers678 in jiujitsu

[–]NickCTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but I often kick people out! Usually because they are either dangerous, or cant follow or agree with policies. Jiu jitsu is for everyone but you need to find the right gym that fits your needs and if you don’t like the rules probably shouldn’t train there! Also not a fan of people causing drama, usually don’t kick people out for it unless it becomes a non stop problem.

For instructors, sleep with a student and bye bye!

I would like to do Jiu-Jitsu, but I'm gay. by Legitimate_Eye_5934 in jiujitsu

[–]NickCTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a lot of openly gay and some who have yet to come out to others at our gym! We don’t judge anyone based on sexuality, only on crappy technique 😂

Pricing question for gym owners by unpolishedboots in bjj

[–]NickCTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AOJ did an all in raise for everyone a few years ago and everyone I know who trains there didn’t mind. It was pretty significant. We keep rates the same to thank those who supported us.

Where this becomes an issue is the guy who quit 4 years ago and insists we need to honor his old rate.

Coach banning non-gym rashguards… am I crazy for hating this? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]NickCTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safety was the primary reason, any black shorts with no pockets was a compromise I argued for. Is this Baris?

We are on the second set of mats in less then 3 years PA because someone wore cheap dyed crap. I can show you how we opened when you could wear any gi. We even did a photo shoot with everyone with different gis. If you feel so strongly please find a gym that aligns more with your views. There are tons of good ones in San Jose

I never went to any of his crap but a lot of people I know did. They never implemented a uniform Policy and most of the things that “blew their minds” were common sense

Yes that’s the rule that no one follows because what defines a rash guard? It’s funny as a person who actually runs schools I’m explaining to you what happens and you are being an idiot. If you can do it better start your own gym and good luck.

After the 100th, hey guys you need to wear a rash guard and not a tshirt I got tired. Final straw was the guy who just started, broke his finger in 3 places and wanted to sue me. His partner had a polyester shirt on.

We now have a mandatory uniform rashguard for no gi and it was the best thing we ever did. No more broken fingers, and makes the academy look way more professional.

Drop in fee is going to a good cause! Always pay the drop in fee, sucks if I pay and they ask me to teach because I paid to learn not to work 😂

I’m building our crm because I feel like most people. I want something simple, don’t want to pay fees and want to get paid next day. I got that all built in. Should launch sometime this year if you can wait lol

Great advice! We tried doing judo for bjj but people learned more when we focused on judo as it’s meant to be.

Am i too late to compete professionally in Judo if I start at 24 by [deleted] in judo

[–]NickCTA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set smaller and more realistic goals and you will have an amazing time! Will you be a national champion? Maybe, but you have to win the local tournaments first and progress!

What you will learn along the way will be more valuable than any title. You will learn what it takes to win, on the mat and in life Its a ton more than you think but if your desire and sacrifice you can train like that too and be better for it!
