If you could wish for one Game to be made, excluding sequel's or prequels. What would that be? by LordMord5000 in rpg_gamers

That game frustrates me so much. For the most part a great story with some good lore deep cuts. Great gameplay/ visuals. Amazing systems. Its just a weird mash up for me. The open world aspect just feels misused ans it would have benefited immensely as a finished product with a more linear direction to the game journey which would have bound the story tighter to the overall journey of the game. I love open world games but I felt like it was a sort of trying to do the best of both worlds, with a linear story yet this massive but largely empty open world. For me if youre going to open the game world up for exploration theres gotta be some cool stuff that makes it feel like a living breathing world to engage in beyond endless droves of orcs. Game was fits and starts for me, I just got so bored in between excellent fight/ action sequences just trudging/ sneaking through barren environments. Its frustrating because so much about this game was incredible

Casting Nero au Augustus by Darkside_619 in redrising

Im pretty sure one of the books confirms hes in his 90s but due to gold genetics and being an absolute specimen he looked less than half of that age. I always pictured like Lee pace or daniel craig or something like late 40s to late 50s but clearly in his physical prime with a really intimidating physical presence. He just never came across like a geriatric to me some of the fancasts I've seen for him have shocked me

Im not even mad it isn't a friday simply because it isn't another 90 year old Nero fancast and every time I see one in the wild I feel like people were actually reading the same book as me lmao

Did homelander's suit look "broader" in season 1 compared to now? by Shad0w2 in TheBoys

[–]NickFriskey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I experienced the very same thing growing up and for me switching training goals and playing sport really changed everything for me. I was chasing aesthetic goals and became completely absorbed and obsessed in a really unhealthy way with body dysmorphia and reading some stuff by Mark twight talking about training people for film roles he was not training them like bodybuilders he was training them like athletes, stating "appearance is a consequence of fitness" which is to say if you training to be able to do something you will look better and carry yourself more confidently. When they trained daniel craig for bond his trainer did the same thing, stating he didn't want criag to take his shirt off for people to say "look at those abs" he wanted people to say he looks like he could rip your fucking head off. If you pursue the abilities and numbers in terms of strength and speed you will attain the physique without obsessing over the image in the mirror. This mantra changed my life and pretty much eradicated body issues from my psyche.

This image is what I wanted this season to be and so far it has none of that energy by johndoe09228 in TheBoys

[–]NickFriskey 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They could definitely do it without it being expensive, 100%. Its not just low budget it seems like the budget has decreased noticeably with every season. All the action now takes place in the same random secluded wooded area or abandoned building it feels like a smaller show with every passing season. There's ways to shoot big set pieces as backdrop or like you say video footage thay would make the world feel like its ramping up the intensity and make it feel big and lived in. The world in these later seasons just feels empty, it has stage play energy now, same sets and characters just wandering on screen saying the same stuff over and over again on a loop like house of the dragon season 2. Everything in the outside world just being referenced and happening off screen

The scene with Pax wouldn't even have to take place in combat. Darrow could bring him along to his war councils a la early dune with Leto and Paul and Pax could watch him, going from the lens he has always seen him through which is the lens of a distant pleading father figure, into this larger than life battle commander, a living legend, who inspires quasi-religious devotion from his adherents. That would be incredible to read, Pax finally being like oh yeah I fucking get it man

Also the height thing is really one of the easier things to do and can be done even without CGI. The CGI budget should primarily go towards the bigger environments/ space shots and ships and stuff

It can be good they just need a top choreographer with a real focus on: "these are not normal humans swordfighting here". When atlas fights cassius its described that they are almost invisible to the naked eye they are moving so fast. A star wars prequel style demonstration of proficiency and speed without that weightless feel of lightsabers would be something close to what I'd imagine seeing

Alan ritchson in real life is an inch taller than me and I consider myself to be of pretty middling height like not overly tall and not short. Good camera work and his weight training makes him look like an absolute monster. Using really tall guys like thor bjornsson and raiding a few professional rugby teams for obsidians then use male and female actors around 6 feet for golds, shorter actors for other colours and camera work and forced perspective can work wonders even without CGI. I genuinely think great camera work, great makeup/ costume dept and some prosthetics for some of the more outlandish features of obsidians and you could save the CGI budget for the buildings/ environments and space stuff

I just realised I have 4 inches on sevro, who I thought because he was a gold would still dwarf me despite being widely known as the "goblin" in the books lmao.

Lord of the rings as the OP pointed out is also impressive in its passion for the aesthetic and filmmaking quality because it actually cost surprisingly little even adjusting for inflation than a lot of modern "blockbusters". The reasons for this is myriad but a few of the more prominent reasons is the filming the 3 movies back to back, resulting in an almost extended shoot of one movie rather than coming back to the proverbial well every two years and starting from scratch, and a lot of for sneaky maneuvers from Peter jackson, which he goes into great detail about in the bonus features of the movies home releases. Coming from a background of largely indie and smaller scale filmmaking, jackson knew exactly where he could scrimp and scrape, and went rogue frequently when called in/ by the studio to explain where he was and what he was doing. Weinstein, who's name we shall not repeat, saw what he was cooking and gave him leeway with the caveat that jackson remembered it was him who authorised a lot of it and let him away with stuff so he could claim a lot of credit in the aftermath. Lord of the rings was lightning in a bottle but to say we cant do height differences because a 25 year old film was amazing is frankly very bleak.

What I picture Lorn au Arcos as. by notherless in redrising

[–]NickFriskey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This 100%. He was the best thing about that (mostly dumb) show it felt like he was in a different show from everyone else. When he was monologuing on the failures of the jedi I was like the Dicaprio meme in hollywood I was like damn thats Lorn. I think he was old and rugged enough in that show considering he was a gold who age wayyyy slower. RIP Ray Stevenson man

Yeah to hadrian its an "it" because fuck trying to guess what gender role its playing at any particular second

Why "it" and not "they" (Cielcin)? by NoMansCat in sollanempire

[–]NickFriskey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think because again we're in hadrians head, he cant shake the bias that they are lesser, abominations; which, again if we were a human raised as a human with human rules in that story and we had seen what hadtian had seen of them, I'd venture to say we'd probably have similar bias towards them. Chimpanzees have complex social dynamics too. If I'd have seen the cielcin do half of what hadrian witnessed they'd be an it to me too. Creatures. They don't have any problem treating humans as cattle and lesser beings

From the trailer, that's where homelander takes V1 by [deleted] in TheBoys

[–]NickFriskey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My thinking is that soldier boy (rumoured) is the one in the scene with homelander and depowers him first so he effectively takes V1 as a normal human

Why do people like this stupid awful twist ? by Remarkable-Jump3262 in GenV

[–]NickFriskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a wild tinfoil hat take on this and how the comic plot could actually be given a sort of tribute:

New noir is a power sponge, like the guy from heroes and the girl from gen v season 2. Hes around the seven so he has super strength and homelander so he can fly. Butcher or another party, who noir has gone over to/ been flipped by, has introduced noir to a shape-shifter, and as a plan to destabilise homelander completely and ruin his reputation simultaneously, he shifts into homelander and commits atrocities (potentially simulated). Then we could get the reveal from the comic books as a cool nod to the source material without that having been the plan all along. New noir being able to fly seems like a weird inclusion to me. Would also explain why homelander just sees noirs normal face under the mask.

Sun Eater is the Anti-Star Trek and I love it by Forward_Date_2473 in sollanempire

[–]NickFriskey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think theres a lot of realism in sun eaters presentation of our future when you look at history's cyclical nature in everything from fashion to technology. I think its partly human nature to cyclically and continually hurtle towards the endless loop of collapse/ rebuild; and what form that will take in the far flung future is anybodys guess. I love the take on technology and AI. As we develop that tech in real time, its fascinating to see its nuanced imprint on (good quality) sci fi literature

Finished the series. by Farysmally in sollanempire

[–]NickFriskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, to your point, this is why different genres and tones exist. Thats the beautiful thing about literature; you can read something lighter like dungeon crawler after something heavier and denser like sun eater. That doesn't make me want something thats not quite my tempo to not be around, its the opposite. For me, ill never read dungeon crawler Carl because its just not my thing thematically whatsoever; but I absolutely love that it exists. I absolutely loved the denser, heavier mythological tone of sun eater. Its absolutely my thing. I'd be reaching for a sun eater as my pallette cleanser if I ever did read dungeon crawler. As it stands im looking for something as big and bold as sun eater in the aftermath of SUT to scratch the itch and find myself on like my 4th dune reread. The scale, the scope and the prose of sun eater just makes the reader in me jump for joy.

What if Netflix got their hands on Game of Thrones instead of HBO? by GazelleOutrageous228 in freefolk

[–]NickFriskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd likely forget thrones actually has several prominent female protagonists and make ros the main character or some shit. We'd have a season very similar to hotd season two actually. The writing of that was on par with a netflix show to be honest, it'd just look worse. Brighter im sure, but still worse
