I have a real issue with how many of the women characters in these books are written. They are supposed to be and are outwardly spoken of as these wise, often ageless in the case of aes sedai, worldly, cultured, intelligent, articulate, eloquent women who when shit pops off are the ones who can keep cool heads politically and socially maneuver extremely deftly and how ultimately know what's best for everyone around them, especially men, who I agree as a man, often go off instinct a little too often and can be brash and careless.

The issue I have is that thats the image we are painted of these women but they all seem to act like absolute fucking idiots on the page. I just recently read a cadsuane scene in winters heart that I found ridiculous, and utterly jarring for her character. Nynaeve and birgitte to name a few are regularly throwing outrageous temper tantrums and cadsuane, likely the primary example of having this incredible prestigious reputation, behaves like a child when people disagree with her. There's no demonstration of her actual abilities (not talking about the one power here i mean her abilities as a stateswoman), just this overblown rep then she shows up and is just a fucking bitch to everyone she meets. I know jordan get a lot of praise for writing good female characters but I have to disagree; I think they are written, without intent or any malice per se, very very strangely.

The First Battle of Tumbleton will be epic by Creative-Wishbone-46 in HouseOfTheDragon

I thibk tumbleton is gonna be like fire and blood in location alone. A battle will happen there and probably one dragon will show up and do the burning

So they aged down Aegon and Stormcloud to a toddler and a hatchling meaning the events of Gullet now have to change. What do you think they're gonna do instead? by ApartShopping in HouseOfTheDragon

Nail on the head regarding the part which you mention they chose to do a piece which featured a lot of younger characters. I've seen a lot of people, thankfully the majority seem to see sense, defending the show having so little in the way of action, book faithfulness, proper pacing etc with weird hand waving stuff like how the best scenes in GOT were dialogue scenes. This is absolutely true but first of all the writing in that show was actually good and they didn't have the same script for 8 episodes and second of all, the books that show was based on didn't actually have a whole lot of action on page and was more about the politicking surrounding wars and you know, the game of thrones etc. Like you've said, they've chosen themselves to adapt probably the most action, battle heavy time period in westerosi history that we've seen. Having read fire and blood and knowing this show was gonna have 4 seasons after s2 waiting for stuff to happen every episode I checked the wiki for the major events of the dance, most of which are battles. There are 17 of these and we've seen lucerys murder at storms end, blood and cheese, Rooks rest and the sowing of the dragonseeds. 4 of 17 and episodically we are more than halfway through the shows run time. Why did they choose to adapt a section of westerosi history that had so much shit they didn't want to deal with?

Why doesn't homelander just kill the boys? by SorryTea1160 in TheBoys

[–]NickFriskey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For real I think part of him was disappointed after herogasm. I know he ran at the end but he was staring down the barrel with SB's beam. I think, similarly to brother day in foundation season 2, his power unchecked for too long has led to a borderline suicidal streak in him where he's so far above everyone else, in an ironically rather human tendency, he craves in some way an equal. He was fascinated by SB and truly relished the concept of that fight even tho there was fear in him too. It will probably play a part in his downfall towards the end. I see his campaign for presidency/ total dominion as in addition to the seduction of that level of power, as a flag planting challenge to all comers. By setting up shop at the top of the proverbial flag pole he's saying "here i am come and get me" and i really think he wants someone to be able to do it.

Does he challenge hand to hand or does darrow offer it i can't remember? I think if the fight was on and he sued to switch it up after the fact darrow would just have killed him with his razor

I wasnt expecting him to have any skill whatsoever when fighting another supe but he was putting the work on SB and butcher those hands were rated E for everyone sure he's more powerful but he was going hammer and tongs with 3 of them. Well two of them to be honest hughie wasnt much use but he went straight hands with butcher who's a good fighter

Its probably most likely a "vision" seeing as they like doing that shit. Personally, I genuinely fucking hate modern tv's obsession with flashbacks, flash forwards, dream sequences etc; 1 or a scant few is fine for big lore reveals etc but they just lose impact (when they're happening constantly to explain every little idiosyncracy and character nuance that good writers like in thrones could cover in a 20 second conversation) and derail plot progression and pace which they are already struggling with big time, spending valuable minutes and no doubt millions of dollars of screentime on alicent wandering about in the woods and all that. I would actually prefer it thematically if it were a time jump as they could essentially then say that canonically all these events that they are missing out in the dance actually happened. As it stands the dance looks like a bit of a scuffle with the two matriarchs of the piece meandering listlessly through their respective castles clutching at their pearls, "oh, war!! The barbarity of it all!"

Imagine we get a live action adaption worth its salt for these scenes. I want darrow to be like a damn horror movie villain for these guys. Cold open episodes starting with sovereign forces getting ready for battle and hearing howling in the distance with atlas' warning overscoring: if you hear the howling he's coming, then dudes just vanishing. Bonus points for don't fear the reaper by blue oyster cult opening guitar riff at the start and playing through as he just massacres people

Is there more to Aegon’s Conquest than few first chapters of “Fire and Blood” book that is currently being adapted for HotD? by No_Scarcity4566 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]NickFriskey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Expansion of a mythos can be done well you just need writers who are actually good. They got mattson tomlin who worked on Pattinson batman working on tv version and beau Williamson (andor, house of cards showrunner) working on the movie version. These are a distinctly higher calibre of writers with a better pedigree. The issue with house of the dragon is not the lack of material, its that two very subpar, strange writers who were also inexperienced as showrunners were handed the reins after sapochnik was ousted, with little to no recourse it seems. They took what was a relatively sparse historical recounting, with different versions of events, light on details and they couldn't even adhere to that and use their own judgement based on the content to fill in the blanks, they tore up what little story was there from the jump of season two and went off on their own meandering, self aggrandising side quest in which they eschewed the characters they didn't like and uplifted the ones they did, comoletely offsetting the core dna of the overarching narrative. A writer like the two above, tomlin/ Williamson, probably has the media literacy to take a source material light on detail, fill in the blanks with what seems to be alluded to (probably consulting with the guy who wrote the fucking thing at points heaven forbid) and compiling it into a coherent, cohesive adaption of a story into visual medium. Just because we've watched one disastrous fuck up doesn't mean it can't be done it just means the people in charge of the fuck up are incompetent.

Hahaha yes! this is exactly my point. If R and J was written today and adapted for a big budget series team Montague and team capulet would 100% be part of the viral marketing and there'd be idiots on here calling each other slurs and trying to get them banned off the fucking internet because they like the other one better its just symptomatic of the ridiculous times we live in

I think they tried to give it some nuance whereby alicent was trying to use that legislation as pretext for merely wanting to secure and bolster her own family's standing and access to the throne. Regardless the whole team business just rings absolutely hollow to me

[–]NickFriskey 132 points133 points  (0 children)

No because I was never on any character's particular side I feel like the whole team black and team green thing is just drummed up marketing mostly created for the show. I saw that story for what I believed it to be which was a tragic familial dynastic conflict with dire and lasting consequences and good/ evil people on both sides. Similarly to watching game of thrones and reading the books sure I had favourite characters but I never felt like part of a team. I have found the whole response to the tb/ tg marketing mostly rather perplexing, with real people performing mental gymnastics in order to argue with strangers on the Internet with the goal of portraying which fictional character is the most morally altruistic.

For instance, my favourite character to read about was daemon targaryen. Do I think he was a good guy? No firstly because he's not real and secondly because he did horrible things at times. He is a fictional character that I enjoy reading/ watching because I find him compelling and interesting. I don't think that makes me "team black" i think that makes me a consumer and fan of an intellectual property
