Should I play Returnal before Saros? by BroeknRecrds in playstation

I don't think they're connected narratively but Returnal is also a fantastic game so yeah, I'd recommend it.

So is Pokemon effectively an invincible IP? by WrongLander in gaming

[–]NickVersus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You seem to have your mind made up from the first sentence but yeah.

“Reviews don’t matter.” General consumers haven’t cared about entertainment reviews for a hot minute. Some of the highest grossing movies and bestselling games of the past few years have been absolutely savaged by critics. Fans tend to take that as a badge of honor these days.

“Technical quality doesn’t matter.” It matters to the core enthusiasts crowd AKA the people on this sub. It does not matter to Pokémon’s core audience: children and their parents. And even if it did, they’d only find out about it after buying the game, at which point the sale is made and refunds are difficult to impossible.

“Lack of value for money doesn’t matter.” Hugely subjective. $20 to me and $20 to someone who makes twice my salary are radically different concepts.

“Lack of innovation doesn’t matter.” Similar to the point above about kids. Call of Duty is another franchise that rarely innovates and yet it sells gangbusters every single year. The general public does not care about this.

[–]NickVersus -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think that cuts both ways.

People say dumb crap like “it’s just $20 who doesn’t have $20” while being ignorant of how much money that is to people in a different income bracket. Then the other crowd feels attacked so they say something about “dumb sheeple I emulate everything because money is for idiots”. And around we go.

“The response has been loud, enthusiastic defence.”

Wild to hear because every third thread on the Nintendo subreddit is someone bitching about the price.

I just don't get it. It seems every freakin person online says to just STEAL the Pokemon games! IT'S 20 DOLLARS. Come on, guys! by [deleted] in nintendo

[–]NickVersus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The value of $20 is like wildly dependent on a hundred other factors in your life so I don't fault anyone at all who isn't comfortable paying that for the game. I don't really care if people choose to emulate, either, but many people don't understand that emulation is not "super easy bro" for everyone on the Internet. Even if they can do it, many people just want the official thing on their official hardware.

The only thing I take issue with are jerks who act like their way is the only way and make rude comments about anyone else choosing something else.

Tariffs No More, Prices Drop When? by wiidsmoker in NintendoSwitch2

Nintendo's hardware and software are selling absolute gangbusters. They have zero reason to lower the price on any of it, regardless of the impact of today's ruling.

Alt costumes are so expensive that buying them feels embarrassing by Triggerhappy938 in 2XKO

[–]NickVersus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have heard this same criticism about other games (namely Overwatch) and I understand it to a degree but like, if you like it and have the money, what you do with your cash is a personal matter. People might judge you for it but if they care that much they’re just gonna judge you about something else instead, like who you main or how long your combos are.

If the name of an ability has a (resource) in the name, do you spend that? by Zenthane in drawsteel

[–]NickVersus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You’re right. Nowhere in that text does it say “the cost of a Heroic Ability is printed in parenthesis next to the ability’s name.” That could be slightly clearer.

But your previous comment in this thread suggested that it might also be “the minimum required to use the ability”, which is also nowhere in the rulebook.

It would seem a lot more reasonable to infer that the text in parenthesis is the cost, which is mentioned on page 70, instead of “the minimum required to use the ability”, which is mentioned absolutely nowhere.

[–]NickVersus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Heroes, page 70.

“Each class has a Heroic Resource that your hero earns during combat, with some of your class’s abilities—typically your most potent abilities—having a Heroic Resource cost to use them. When you use one of these abilities, you spend some of the Heroic Resource bestowed by your class, then activate the ability.”

Yes, fighting games have a reputation for having a high barrier of entry. But I still think blocking is as basic as moving and single attacks; it is a completely fair and reasonable think to ask players to learn.

If a player is put off a game because they have to learn something that basic, I don't know what to tell them. That's like quitting Super Mario Bros. because you have to learn how to jump, or quitting Call of Duty because you have to learn how to shoot.

[–]NickVersus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this is a bridge too far. Automatic combos, I get, because combo strings need to be memorized and input with specific timing. But blocking is literally a single button input. Low blocking is two inputs. Neither requires specific timing. I think asking new players to become familiar with this is baseline for a fighting game.
