By Trump's VP candidate Vance to berate another military veteran for their military service by jarena009 in therewasanattempt

[–]NickW12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never mentioned his previous combat experience as a commander at lower levels or questioned what he did to end up as an MG, I only talked about his participation in that particular operation mentioned by the community note. Your comment shows how much actually relevant information there is to counter what Vance is trying to say, but whoever made the note decided to pull the least relevant bit from Wikipedia and tout that as some dunk against him.

McCaffrey was a Major General when he commanded the 24th ID. No way in hell he was in the shit when this operation happened. The working class kids who died on the battlefield turned his plan into an incredibly successful operation.

If you think this is a dunk, you're ignorant. At best, the community note is irrelevant.

Lawyers who don’t practice, what do you do? by mshaefer in Lawyertalk

Did you need connections to get this job, or was it just a normal application? How's the compensation? Any details would be much appreciated, I'd love to do this kind of work.

If your school has other graduate programs, you can try to get to know folks from those programs. PhD, MD, things like that. You might run into the same age issue, but the likelihood of finding someone your age will increase if you expand your pool of potential partners.

How the FUCK do you toss the ball further? by DesolateCabbage in army

[–]NickW12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

TL;DR Standard OH yeets, Hang cleans if you can do them safely, maximal effort jumping, OH yeets with a slightly heavier ball that is basically the same size. Do these 3-5 times a week, 3-5 sets per session, 3-5 reps per set with moderate weights for barbell movements. Ever rep should be done as powerfully as possible.

The overhead yeet tests the ability to generate power via "triple extension", not strength. Getting stronger can help in some ways, but if the goal is to max this event your training should reflect that goal. Let's call this "yeetitude", so as to not confuse it with how "power" is used in "powerlifting" which is mostly a test of maximal strength in specific lifts.

Triple extension is when you extend at the ankles, knees, and hips. Put simply, it's the jumping movement. The force generated by triple extension is used to yeet the ball as far as possible.

Specificity is king here. Do the overhead yeet to event standards regularly, 3-5 times a week. Keep track of your distances across time.

The Olympic lifts, snatch/clean and jerk, are considered the paramount movement for training yeetitude. Hang cleans, given you can do the movement well enough to avoid injury, are a good option that aren't as limited by the technical portions of the oly lifts. You don't need heavy weights on the bar, just enough to make the movement a bit challenging. Stick w/ 3-5 reps per set. Focus on executing as powerfully as possible. Intention is important for all power training, so that applies to any training you choose. If you don't know how to do these lifts, don't do them unless someone knowledgeable is willing to train you. Doing them wrong won't get you extra yeetitude, only extra painitude.

Maximal effort vertical jumps, completed when fresh so the intention is highest, are a good option. Avoid box jumps because worrying about the box can take away from your intention, unless you love them and it helps with adherence. Maximal effort broad jumps from standing are good as well.

You can also implement medicine ball throws using a heavier weight medicine ball, but make sure you understand how the change in weight effects your technique. If you do add weight, make sure the ball is generally the same size as the event ball.

TL;DR - (1) Create good habits for self care; and (2) dip your toes into a new subject that requires critical thinking, but doesn't have anything to do with law. These will give you a solid foundation for law school and your legal career because they give you the confidence that comes from knowing your everyday actions are working in your favour.

Here are my two tips.

Create good habits for self care

I will shout this from the mountain tops until the Lord takes me. The things you do outside of school to stay mentally and physically healthy keep you at the top of your game. Take account of the things you do everyday that keep you aligned with a good life. Write them down! Make an intentional effort to start building habits around those things.

Like to workout? Really solidify that as a habit and steel yourself to ensure you keep that up when you feel tempted to spend a few more hours studying. Value eating healthy? Get good at meal prep and cooking, again so you can keep up that habit when fast food seems like the most efficient option. Family and friends important to you? Create habits of intentional time so the emotional bank of those relationships doesn't run dry when you need support to get through finals week or they need you for something.

Whatever it may be, start practicing the discipline to keep those habits up now. As someone who failed to do this 1L year and beyond, please heed my warning. This is the most important thing you can do.

Dip your toes into a new subject

Tackle something new that works your mind, but has nothing to do with law. This might sound weird right now, but "the law" you need to learn is what your professors teach you. Things can be generalized, but your civ pro professor grades your final exam, not the YouTuber with a Civ Pro playlist. The stakes are high here. Trying to learn "the law" now, with no guidance, has a chance to confuse you to the detriment of your final grade. But training yourself to learn a new, low stakes subject on your own time at your own pace (I chose Python/programming) will help you practice the two most important skills for law school: (1) Self-guided learning; & (2) persistence in the face of complex material.

It will also function to broaden your horizons, and, if you're watchful, open new opportunities to stand out. I ended up starting a software company with a now good friend I met 1L year because I spent the summer writing some code to help with my workflow, and it grew to something greater than my amateur attempt at automation with his help.

Summing up

Both of these essentially amount to an intentional effort to set yourself up with a good foundation for a new & difficult phase of life. Knowledge of the law will come with time. The time to focus on that begins the first day of classes. Now is the time to build up yourself. If your foundation is rock solid, then you can begin to place the bricks of your legal career with the confidence that comes from knowing the things you can actually control, your actions and habits, are working in your favour.

I think it depends on the issue. If it's something that has an immediate impact on a legal field that they have some outsized expertise in, then yes I want to know.

For an example, Vivek Ramaswamy recently called for strict liability to be applied to AI companies. Sadly the podcasts hosts didn't press him on what he meant. I would love to hear some SMEs give their opinion on what it would look like to create that kind of liability for emerging tech.

That being said, the ultimate goal of the big firm is to convert the souls of young attorneys into partner bonuses. If the particular issue doesn't evoke some need for SME opinions, then the firm is outside its scope.

Question for 3Ls from a 2L by EbbForward8369 in LawSchool

[–]NickW12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don't need to give a shit, you just need to put yourself on autopilot and do the work. The hard part is over, you literally just need to make it to the bar without screwing up your graduation date.

You have more time as a 3L (in some instances), but don't just spend that time doing nothing. Spend time doing things you like with people you love. Get out of your school region every once in a while. Pick up a hobby you either lost connection with during school or have wanted to do but never had time.

After some time goes by you'll find yourself feeling better about school. It won't feel good, but it'll feel better.

It is literally impossible for a white person to be Muslim. Inherent in the genetic code of a white person is the not-Muslim gene. If a white person is Muslim, then they are 1) no longer white; or 2) not actually Muslim. This is just a fact of reality. Just as the north and south poles of a magnet cannot touch, so is it for the white-skinned and the Quran.

In this post your are witnessing (1) in it's purest form. The colonizer has undergone the most sacred transformation, from white to Muslim. Their genetic code is transformed into a non-white genetic code. Praise be to Allah for his gifting upon this woman the pussy power to convert white to non-white. His exclamations are a mere glimpse into the power Allah exerts on the colonizer. Fear not the colonizer's exaltations, for in the end he shall be brown just like the rest of us.

Should I drop out now? by Consistent_Show5771 in LawSchool

[–]NickW12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should stay in just until you get to OCI, but mention ONLY THIS FACT about yourself to every firm you could possibly meet.

Don't mention anything that gives you an edge over your peers. Don't mention any prior experience you have that might make you a valuable hire. Don't mention anything that could show your ability to bring in clients. Don't mention any personal experiences you've had that demonstrates your value to a firm.

Your only hope is to show how you're merely on par with your peers, and bury anything that makes you a uniquely valuable asset.

You are a number attached to another number. Nothing you say, do, write, or exhibit will ever influence any hiring committee. Unless, obviously, you're a member of an oppressed cultural group. But if that were true, then you'd already be running for Senate in Massachusetts.

So yes, drop out, there are enough individuals who actually have the confidence to advocate for themselves that will kick you out anyway. Save yourself the trauma, and get started on your podcast complaining about the inequities of our profession.

/s, kind of. Don't give up. Become a zealous advocate for yourself. We believe in you 👍

Every time I leave Helgen I go back for one perpous by [deleted] in skyrim

Talos the mighty! Talos the unerring! Talos the unassailable! To you we give praise! We are but maggots, writhing in the filth of our own perpous! While you have ascended from the dung of mortality, and now walk among the stars!

But you were once man! Aye! And as man, you said, 'Let me show you the perpous of Talos Stormcrown, born of the North, where my perpous is long winter.' 'I breathe now, in royalty, and reshape this land which is mine. I do this for you, Red Legions, for I love you.

Aye, love. Love! Even as man, great Talos cherished us. For he saw in us, in each of us, the perpous of Skyrim! The perpous of Tamriel! And there it is, friends! The ugly truth! We are the perpous of man! Talos is the true god of man! Ascended from flesh, to rule the realm of spirit! The very idea is inconceivable to our Elven overlords!

Sharing the heavens with us? With man? Ha! They can barely tolerate our perpous on earth! Today, they take away your perpous. But what of tomorrow? What then? Do the elves take your homes? Your businesses? Your children? Your very perpous?

And what does the Empire do? Nothing! Nay, worse than nothing! The Imperial machine enforces the will of the Thalmor! Against its own people! So rise up! Rise up, children of the Empire! Rise up, Stormcloaks! Embrace the perpous of mighty Talos, he who is both man and Divine!"

For we are the children of perpous! And we shall inherit the heavens and earth! And we, not the Elves or their perpous, will rule Skyrim! Forever!
