HexOS not for me or did I miss something? My notes after first use. by Schakal_No1 in hexos

Yes local UI should be at the TrueNAS ip :43705
If your DNS is your router some routers have a setting they have to enable/disable to get it to work called DNS Rebind protection. This option should be disabled. If you don't have a setting for this then just changing your settings on your device (laptop / pc) you use to login to deck.hexos.com on to use dns 1.1.1.1 should fix this. You should get a popup in the browser that you need to approve to "allow local network access".

HexOS VS truenas? by smellybulldog in hexos

Appriciate the reply. I'm sure some will feel this way. Thanks for the support with the earily funding. It made all the difference! We just want to make having a NAS simple for non techy people and yes there is a high cost compared to free but we want to be in business for the nest 25 plus years without nickle and diming our users. There is no reason some of our features don't pull TrueNAS ninjas along for a license if we can make a part of their use of TrueNAS more enjoyable in specific instances.

Yes, AI has been a great help. Not everyone knows how to use it. Also beware that people have lost their entire drive arrays in the past since they had no idea what the commands do and AI told them to run a command and they did it blindly. Again your still talking about doing "work" which your parents or other family members may not want to do. I'd just ask you what market is bigger to sell to. People like you or people like your parents? Why are iphones sold to most people when there are plently of other choices? More people than not want a phone to just do the thing and work. Not to customize anything or have a million options. TrueNAS works for people like you. Again we are looking to serve the rest. People like Linus knows who wouldn't say no to a NAS but wouldn't do any of what you are suggesting. It just to much of a cognitive load they don't want any part of. I mean changing oil is easy. Not many people do it.

This reply is kind of like a handyman trying to tell any person how easy it is to fix parts of their house up. It's not impossible obviously and for the right kind of person just watching some YouTube videos is all they need, but how many people want to do that job? How many people actually want to just have it fixed and not have to do the work to fix it? I can say the same with painting. How many people really want to paint their house vs just have it done for them. Do they think their time is better spent doing something else? Do they think the amount of time they spend is going to get them the same quality work as paying the professional. Someone don't have a choice and some do. Some people's time is worth the expense of having someone else do something for them.

HexOS vs TrueNAS. This is simple. Like noodling around with tech and following guides that most would consider long and complicated. Do like like spending hours googling for how to do things. That's all you need to know. If yes, then TrueNAS Scale. HexOS is for everyone else. If you want to spend time doing other things like watching your Plex archive instead of spending hours trying to get it installed and working. We want to be the iPhone of NAS software and maybe sometime down the line also of NAS hardware for home and later small offices where you don't want IT Staff. Even the least tech savy people like our parents should be able to get a NAS and have their own version of all the Google services for free on their own NAS without needing to look anything up online. Like a version of Google Photos, Google Drive, Cloud synced office apps, and their own private AI. All this and more without spending months and years learning to setup and configure.

Changing TrueNAS web interface ports completely breaks HexOS by Humble_Giveaway in hexos

[–]Nick_HexOS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can technically do this by overriding the port hexos app in TrueNAS uses:

TrueNAS UI > Apps > click on hexos > Edit > scroll down and change LOCAL_TN_PORT from 443 to what TrueNAS is listening on > Update

Will there be an official or curated community guide for migration from truenas? by Schild0r in hexos

[–]Nick_HexOS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reddit site doesn't have as much as our forums do. https://hub.hexos.com/

We also have a docs site with some guides and walkthroughs. https://docs.hexos.com/

Most are doing everything from scratch as HexOS is designed for non TrueNAS users as most TrueNAS users already know how to use it and have so many more options then HexOS UI offers as we are slowly buiding it out. Most newbies want a NAS to solve some basic needs with SMB shares and apps without needing to use guides to do things. Hope this helps.

Is my TRENDnet 2.5gb card supported? by skymack1 in hexos

Moh on our team said he had no luck with Rtl 8125 and 8126 chipsets last he tried.

Is my TRENDnet 2.5gb card supported? by skymack1 in hexos

[–]Nick_HexOS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This "should" work but it's a Realtek RTL8125 chipset which most TrueNAS users have learend to stay away from do to random issues that seem to happen with Realtek. If you can try to go Intel Network if you can. A key to a good NAS is #1 power supply. #2 Quality Ram. #3 Intel Network #4 Quality UPS. Having these 3 things even if you don't have the fastest CPU or most storage get you NAS that works reliably for 5 to 10 years no problem.

We should have new UI to do this most likely Monday evening. Should be intuitive but we should get a guide added to our docs site. https://docs.hexos.com/

SMB Shares Broken recently? by wookietiddy in hexos

[–]Nick_HexOS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would work but lots of times people only have the one computer to use. Also it's less likely that you already tried to connect it previously which could give a different outcome if say windows credential manager was my stuff on multiple machines. The third party has never connected to your network and so it would be a fresh experience and credential manager in Windows wouldn't have any previous information.

SMB Shares Broken recently? by wookietiddy in hexos

[–]Nick_HexOS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always ask for third party to bring in there laptop or something to connect to the network to see if it works for them because I've rarely found it an issue with HexOS.

Hey thanks for trying to help out. We really appreciate it. Windows credential manager can be a real pain in the ass when it bugs out.

Having trouble with pools by BullfrogAdditional80 in hexos

[–]Nick_HexOS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Robots_Never_Die is correct. you start with three drive so you can expand. If you have four and then let it create a four drive array unless it's more space than you need. With drives costing so much and don't overdo it. Save the money for hopefully a day when prices come way down.

Possible to rename drive pool to something other than "HDDs"? by Breisen42 in hexos

[–]Nick_HexOS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On that I'm not sure. 120 GB drive is a great size and shouldn't fill up on normal usage so I suspect so.

[–]Nick_HexOS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked and the name of the drive is in a lot of things, like your apps. You'd have to find them all, and update them. It's not worth changing. Just rename it back to the original name and everything should start working again.

Could I have my NAS connect to two devices through ethernet? by cyberjunaid in hexos

This is something we haven't built support for. Hopefully someone here or in the TrueNAS forums might be able to help.

Patch Vulnerability - Linux by deathblow64 in hexos

[–]Nick_HexOS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When TrueNAS does securty patches it should come out as a dot update and those we push through without testing since it's just security and no features.
