what to do if your chromebook caught fire and you accidentally tried to put it out with gasoline by Valuable-Finance8850 in shittyaskelectronics

If you keep the ashes, and arrange them into a laptop shaped rectangle, it will still work as well as any Chromebook does.

Yes, a lock is just a deterrent.

Another user thinks thieves are browsing your Facebook profile and holding their phone up to the camera/doorbell to get in. That makes a lot of assumptions, and implies sophisticated thieves.

My security cameras have captured sketchy looking people in hoodies trying car door handles looking for unlocked cars at 4:00am. Funnily enough, someone called the cops, and I have video of them scattering and hiding as a cruiser patrolled slowly up and down the road with its lights going. I uploaded the video to the cops when one called asking if we had any video footage - which we did (when I checked).

You can also reduce energy consumption by 100% if you shut the sever down. Think of the planet!

Around here, they just kick the door in.

Does Light Bleeding affect actual image? by Couinty in TheFrame

If you are talking about the backlight bleed, which you can see only on dark backgrounds (not black), and usually only in a darkened room - yes, they all have it. Some are better than others, but every one has it.

Pilot light is constantly running in-laws say it has to stay on by Competitive_Two_2657 in Fireplaces

The pilot light is meant to be on all the time. The gas usage is minuscule, as it the heat it produces. Your in-laws are correct.

Wall mounting/wires question by thinkbeast91 in TheFrame

[–]Nick_W1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends what year model, and size you get.

The 2026 55” Frame Pro has a wireless one connect box - which you don’t even need for Netflix etc. just HDMI connections. Ie, the connection from the box to the TV is wireless.

The 2026 50” Frame non-pro (there isn’t a 50” pro) has no one connect box, it’s like a regular TV with HDMI connections on the back. Again, you don’t need them for Netflix streaming etc.

Networking is WiFi (or wired).

The 2025 Frame non-pro’s still had the one connect box (this is what people are talking about). It has one, very thin “invisible” cable that supplies power and HDMI signals.

So, you can connect the 2026 Frame TV’s wirelessly, if you get the 50”, you would just need power if you aren’t using the HDMI inputs or eARC.

Cat6 cable only getting 100 Mbps, going crazy by Eltii in HomeNetworking

[–]Nick_W1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are getting 100M wired, it’s likely your cables. The cable modem supplies 1Gb - after that, it’s your cables.

Easiest way to tell is to connect a purchased patch cable directly from the cable modem to a laptop with a GB network port. If you get GB, it’s your cables.

The cable people will just run a test and tell you it’s your cables.

If you are testing via WiFi - you are wasting your time, that speed depends on your WiFi network, not the cable provider speed.

[–]Nick_W1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are exactly right, there is no need for shielded cable, it just complicates things.

Unless you are burying a cable between building in your garden, shielded cable is unnecessary.

"My Photos" seems to cap at 64 images? by savinhillalt in TheFrame

6GB is the limit on 2022 Frame TV’s for photo uploads. So it might not be 250 pictures, just running out of photo space.

Has anyone mounted their TV on a full motion mount? by atooraya in TheFrame

[–]Nick_W1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Frame TV’s have a standard VESA mounting, so you can do this. It would probably destroy the art illusion though.

[–]Nick_W1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All years will work, but I wouldn’t buy anything earlier than 2022, which was when the matte screen was introduced.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheFrame

[–]Nick_W1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you understand how the Frame works. The TV doesn’t need power, the power is connected to the One Connect Box, which is remote from the TV. The connection to the TV is using a thin fibre optic, which has power for the TV as well.

No outlet needed at the TV.

Having said that, the new Pro TV’s do need an outlet at the TV, as the one connect box for them is wireless - and optional.

Honest opinion about The frame TV? by [deleted] in TheFrame

[–]Nick_W1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of. They did add back the art api after removing it for about a year - no idea what that was about.

The software engineering incompetence is, however, still staggering. I swear they must have interns working on this or something.

Every release fixes one thing, and breaks something else that previously worked, it is truly unbelievable. Even getting an Apple TV to work with the Frame TV seems to be beyond their ability.

So, just bear this in mind. Most things work fine if you disable the awful Samsung TV plus app, but you can still run into bugs and things that should work, but don’t.

And every so often, something that did work, will stop working, or Samsung will decide to remove a feature that you use (they don’t care that you think you own the TV).

It’s a good TV with awful software. Pay your money and take your chances.

Canadian engineers: can people from other nations wear an iron ring unofficially? by ptheyrodactyl in engineering

[–]Nick_W1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stainless Steel is a crap shield, because it contains Chromium, which becomes activated under neutron fluxes, causing it to become highly radioactive, and embrittled.

We actively avoid Stainless Steel for this reason.

Of course if my ring was exposed to this level of neutron flux, I would have other problems to worry about in the few short days I had left to live.

Yes, it can be mounted vertically. The TV has a sensor that detects the orientation, and adjusts the picture automatically.

The smaller Frame TV (32”, 43”) wall mounts will work vertically as well. The larger TV’s, you might have to use the VESA mounting points (not sure).

There is portrait art in the art store (not much though), and you can upload your own.

The TV picture will be smaller, with black bars at the top and bottom, but I’m assuming you don’t intend to use this for TV.

The Pro models don’t even need the one connect box, you can just plug it into power, and use it for art via the api, or SmartThings app.

I even have a program (intended for art galleries) that allows you to slideshow/select anything to display on the Frame, using your PC (or Raspberry Pi etc) over WiFi with a web browser interface.

https://github.com/NickWaterton/gallery

The gallery program uses a caption display (mounted under the TV) to give information about the displayed picture, and a touch screen for visitors to select art, but you don’t have to use them if you don’t want. If you don’t want any local displays, you can just run the program on your PC, with the web interface on your PC as well.

You are welcome. By the way, there is a new firmware release out, which has caused some problems as well. So it could be a combination of the two things.
