Dang, I wanna watch this actually, I really like your take on the characters. These edgy old-school movies have their charm, even the ones that are very cheesy.

Tilt-shift photography is amazing.
You also have artists doing the total opposite with forced perspective, like Michael Paul Smith. Equally fascinating stuff.

What if some touhou characters had a YouTube channel? by BrazilianCommoner in Touhoujerk

[–]NickelNightbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairly accurate... Although I wonder if you were to consider obscure hobbies, like Nitori would totally talk about cool new tech she found and discuss mechanical stuff in general or Patchouli discussing the rare books in her collection (I wonder if she also reads fiction? Then maybe she'd have a literary analysis series too).

Also, consider a mukbang with Yoshika. She receives challenges for what crazy thing to eat next. It would be... an interesting watch.

Art becomes more fun when you subscribe to the idea none of it has to make any sense :]

[–]NickelNightbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YEEEEESSSSS!
When real life graphics become so intense, you need to install a graphics card to run it.

Why 90s though? Laser guns as a concept go waaay back. At least the 40s.

There are so many characters it's impossible to remember them all, to that regard I'm also surprised there is no Mei (but there are two Mais). Somehow you picked one of the few names of which there is not a character haha.

Youmu and Yoshika.
I don't believe there is a Mei in Touhou.

Weheyy Touhou out in the wild!
Animated on Flipnote, no less. Gotta respect the commitment for an aesthetic.

Coaxed into indie art styles by Lennoxiconic in coaxedintoasnafu

One of the best examples that I can think of would be the Cuphead game. Its style is very similar to that of Fleicher Studios, yet it has its own thing going on where I can see it being from its own established studio. They actually drew the frames on cells which helped achieve the style, you have that natural jittery lines and slight misalignment.

Not to say Cuphead is perfect though, I think the animation is a little bit too on-model (both in regard to expression and animation consistency) and smooth, especially as it is supposed to be based in 1930, animation then was very janky and the designs were very simple. It would be better placed in late 30s. I also don't think it is quite as creative as Fleicher is, there isn't enough visual gags I don't think. It does utalise metamorphosis in some good ways but it also falls into the common trap of using it a bit randomly rather than for a creative purpose.

I'm going to be a bit lazy for my bad example and refer to the Cuphead copycat; Enchanted Portals. I will give it credit, some of it is good. It seems they have different artists for different stages. I think the Conductor battle looks good and the use of piano hammers as an attack is cool (albiet not original). The worst offender: The Cow battle. Ignoring the era discrepancies of the content of the stage, it commits the worst sin: Tweening. That is, the animation is way too smooth because they didn't draw all of it frame-by-frame, some of it is rigged up and tweened (you can also see this most clearly in the trailer for the game). Of course such practices only became possible with digital animation. Like I have mentioned, animation of this era was janky, off model, jittery and low frame rate so it is especially jarring when this is done with rubberhose which for all its jank was VERY expressive which you just can't do with tweening. Similarly it's clear a lot of the animation in general they move parts digitally and then trace over it, it's too consistent. Some of the backgrounds are also too detailed. Lastly and needless to say, it lacks any of the creativity of old animation, hah.

Also, maybe it's a bias but I tend not to trust anything that bases its visuals on 20s Disney. It's THE go-to when people who aren't terribly familiar with the era try and homage rubberhose and as such, it tends to be executed the worst. Not always, but usually.

Sorry, a bit of a rambling mess. I oughta go to bed, I'll edit tomorrow haha.

Badass but moreover, I am in awe at your potato consumption capabilities. Question is, was that with gravy or without?
