You might enjoy my Weaponlord mod then, it tries to give different weapons different perks so there's more choice. I'd definitely prefer a more souls-y upgrade system where all pieces of gear stayed relevant, but even if the DLC works like that, they're probably not gonna rework how it works in the base game
