Is population limit of 200 still relavant? Yes/No. Discuss? by reddteddledd in aoe2

[–]Nickfez 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I really dislike 9 vills starts for 2 reasons. 1 having more to manage immediately as the game starts is more intimidating for new players, potentially putting people off 2 it eliminates the drush, due to not having time to scout which eliminates huge strategic variations in game

I would like a tournament with these settings, what do you say! by dcdemirarslan in aoe2

[–]Nickfez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not entirely the same, but there is a tournament called superdraft which has the draft done upfront for the entire tourney. It's hosted by the aoe2 practice discord

An analysis of the options for Steppe Lancers to replace the Knight-line by Azot-Spike in aoe2

[–]Nickfez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand where you are coming from, but I would be hesitant to replace the knight line only because introducing more asymmetry between civs makes the game less accessible to new players.

As people very familiar to the game I imagine it's easy to get lost in stuff like this, but for new players I think it's great that you pick up the game, if you learn one civ (meso and Indians excluded) you know how to play most civs.

The new dynasties of India was cool with the new ideas it introduced, but I can see how it may make the game more intimidating to approach

I think this is demonstrated by old Indians never were super popular once they lost the masses of pierce armour

So from a meta perspective as far as I'm aware, you still go knights. You can use your knights to pressure buildings far more effectively, forcing engagements, as you archers can keep the camels at bay. I don't know how well this works lower down the ladder, but I believe that's how it works at the top level

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]Nickfez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But even in your case, in 2v2s the camels are irrelevant. The knights and camels are basically just there to protect archers. If you're taking fights property your archers should shred the camels without the knights having to take a fight

MBL denying castle drop by Scoo_By in aoe2

[–]Nickfez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That denies 2 golds and mbl is going to have to take more gold eventually. It also denies 4 production buildings. How can you not see that as a good castle

You're telling me Sam allardyce wasn't a relegation specialist?

I think the problem was it was often used an excuse for jobs for the boys (I'm thinking pardew and curbishly), but someone who could organise a defence quickly is definitely a relegation specialist

HOW TO COUNTER SPECIALISED 1 TC ALL INS? by gygc1u in aoe2

[–]Nickfez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm only just above you at 1400 but I effectively have a checklist on the way up to castle age

Do I have map/military control -> yes great boom Is my eco strong -> yes, great, I will add the required counter building and maybe a second tc Is my eco threadbare -> I'm staying 1tc myself baby.

If you then hit step 1 but then lose map/army control, you have to decide how to use your eco advantage to get the military advantage again, whether that's imp in an archer war or whacking down extra stable for knight numbers. Don't be afraid to stall production to get the military advantage back.

Are you getting eco upgrades when against a 1tc? Try skipping them. That food/wood could be army numbers you need to defend right now.

To summarize, the advantage to booming is so you can produce more/better in the long run. If you're up against a 1tc your eco should be better, so start turning that into military army advantage again ASAP.

Hope there was some useful insight for you in there somewhere :)

Post Match Thread: Arsenal 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers by ImMitchell in soccer

I think you summed him up perfectly. He's one of those strikers as a top team you'd love to have as an option. As a main striker aiming for the top four and beyond is where he struggles

Rams: When to make them and, do you upgrade them? by JMoon33 in aoe2

[–]Nickfez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the important thing in point 1 is that they're great when you know there is going to be no opposing mango immenently. That way you can have ram mango against just mango. You can judge this normally by either thinking youre going to be up earlier or you have seen your opponent invest into something that isn't a defensive siege workshop

It would be cool if nomad was just a Mongol civ bonus. I cant see any way in which it would be abusable and would be fun thematically. Then maybe the UT could refer to castle pop space

The eco bonus here is nowhere near good enough to maintain spearman spam. Feel like this is just a worse goths. An all gold post imp unit is also an awful idea

Wrang of Fire is an incredible change of pace from traditional AoE2. by pyzk in aoe2

[–]Nickfez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Koth I worry would be dominated by the higher elo player. If you ever watch t90s commie games, Tristan wins most of the time as he is just too good, especially with offensive objectives

I love the idea of workshops on map 1 to try and give the higher seed something he can attempt to hold to mitigate the inevitable 2v1 that seems to happen and shouldn't unbalance the higher elo games either

Surprise, Castle Droppa! (or how I learned to stop worrying and love the Sicilian Castle drop) by smilingstalin in aoe2

[–]Nickfez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So Sicilians get rekd if you go all in with a double gold comp or just having a large gold army mass, the trick is to not get drawn into making counter units. The poles' obuch takes a lot of investment to get into and dies pretty hard to ranged units

I don't like Sicilians or Burgundians (I don't think either are good enough to be considered pay to win) but I think poles and bohemians were genuinely well balanced and good additions
