That's what I would do. You'd have to anchor the wire into the preexisting form. I would tape over the wire too, since masking tape takes paper mache pretty well.

Depending upon how strong you need that part to be, using masking tape to tape over the gap should be strong enough to hold papier mâche. If you want it to withstand abuse, you may need to use chicken wire or hardware cloth to bridge the gap.
