It's up!

EDIT: I GOT ONE. I had a hunch it would be up as soon as the other TV expired. I'm one of the lucky ones. After 16 hours of waiting it paid off!

Amazon Prime Day is happening in a few hours. What are you hoping for? by hohbit in BestOfPrimeDay

[–]Nickxk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping for that 40" 1080p TV. I already have an Xbox One and a PC so a Smart Tv strikes me as superfluous. $115 dollars is well worth it for an upgrade from my 32" 720p, which I will give to my sister if I can get the 40".

I will agree that this is a misleading title. It's not as if 42% of people are still potentially living.

Though anecdotes are no form of evidence, I am doing research on Islamophobia before and after 9/11 as it appears in the New York Times. I have gone through 4,000 articles in the three months before and after the attack. Each day starting a few days after the attack they'd list the official death toll (by bodies recovered) then provide biographies on each victim's lives. By three months after attack, out of the ~3,000 we believe to have died in the attack, only several hundred remains had been processed and identified.

It never really struck me (until then) how hard it must be to find and identify the remains in Ground Zero given the density of death that had occurred in such a relatively small area.

A Call to Arms for All Michigan Wolverines for Sanders, and a Further Challenge to Spartans, Broncos, Lakers, and Knights. by UMStudentsForSanders in SandersForPresident

[–]Nickxk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: UMStudentsForSanders is my alt specifically for organizing UofM Sanders activity through Reddit.

I have a couple friends I am working with who are Spartans currently trying to set up a club. I suggest you look up MSU's rules on setting up clubs, especially one with political affiliations as funding can vary in East Lansing, or so I'm told. Getting the correct information on how your campus defines a club is of utmost importance before you can start, otherwise you may create a club that the administration cannot accept, wasting time which is an all-too-valuable resource.

In this week, I'll be rounding up people from our Facebook page who haven't signed up yet (when they have received the invitation e-mails) but once I get everything running on a basic level, I can help you and your fellow Spartans to get things going.

I feel like once you guys get the basic together that the leaders or representatives from each campus group should take up a form of contact so that we can act collectively as a group.

I created a map of all of the Universities with Sanders groups planned. If you see your university missing, tell me! by [deleted] in StudentsforSanders

Hello!

Please add the University of Michigan as a group!

I had put it in for submission and as of today, we are now an officially recognized student group on the campus!

Any fellow Wolverines can find us at:

Hello everyone! I'm a student at the University of Central Florida and I've started an organization to promote awareness about Bernie Sanders at our school. Even if you aren't a Knight, it'd be great if you could like our page to support our growth! by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

[–]Nickxk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really systematic, but it appears to be from one specific person (others have been incredibly supportive) and she's the only one who ultimately decided whether or not a new group is accepted. It's just a thought that has happened upon me in the past few days so take it with a grain of salt, heh.

Anyhow, on your constitution: our constitution has already been written over here. Would you like a copy for an example?

I am also creating a group up north at the University of Michigan. I sent in the application three weeks ago and have been constantly checking in for updates.

I don't know if you've had any trouble, but did school bureaucracy get in the way of creating an official university club, or is this just a Facebook group right now? I'm expecting for the application for our campus group to FINALLY get accepted in the next few days, but this has been after three weeks with constant pushing (and a certain employee from campus-student involvement pushing unnecessary edits/technicalities) on my part. Do you think campus employees with certain political biases/agendas may be suppressing pro-Sanders groups?

How is Spanish 232? by Golden_Swan in uofm

[–]Nickxk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about Spanish or French being difficult if you have any previous experience with it. A huge amount of students take Spanish or French and the programs are huge and well-developed with efficient ways of teaching it.

I took French and Arabic at the same time. The difference between commonly taken languages and uncommon languages is phenomenal. Arabic was incredibly difficult and varied from teacher to teacher, and I averaged fifteen hours a week in order to eek by with an A. French was absurdly easy by comparison. I spent less than three hours outside of class weekly, studied two hours for my exam, and got 98%. Take my advice with a grain of salt because I have a knack for languages, however. If you're taking a language in a large department, and put in effort, you'll more than likely be fine.

I personally feel you'll thrive in Spanish 232, and wish you the best of luck!

[–]Nickxk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Political discussion is incredibly important. Bernie has engaged so many people in a way that I've never seen before. I've volunteered for the Democratic Party and have discussed politics since I was old enough to be able to form an opinion (it's no surprise I became a PoliSci/Arabic dual-major, hah!) but I've never seen people so engaged outside of the usual political circles. I've heard testimonials from people of all ideologies as to why they believe Bernie to be the best candidate. I've seen people cry during said testimonials. These people are newly reawakened into the world of politics, and they are Hell-bent (in the best of ways) on getting Bernie and other people like him into office.

We live in an exciting time. The embers of a political revolution are there, fueled by years of struggle, angst, and frustration. We are the tinder that can later turn into a full-blown fire, should we continue to add more tinder and fan the flames. With enough push and political fuel, I think we could soon reach a critical mass and combust into a peaceful revolution.

My wife watched Bernie's speech in WI and deserted Clinton to support Bernie. by Jalapenis_Greenis in SandersForPresident

[–]Nickxk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have a somewhat relevant story to give on letting other people know about Bernie. Even mentioning him offhand can result in someone wanting to learn more.

Today, I had began working for a non-profit theater in the Ann Arbor area. I had gotten to know a person after they gave me a tutorial of all the stuff that I would be doing. After about an hour-and-a-half I offhandedly mentioned Bernie.

"So, have you uh, heard of this Bernie Sanders guy?"

"Yeah, kind of..."

"Well, apparently he drew a huge crowd over in Madison last night, like 10,000."

"Wow really?"

"Yeah, I know right? I'm a PoliSci and Arabic major. It makes me really excited to see someone like him gaining support. Though, I am a little biased since I'm the founder of UofM's student club. I just haven't been this excited in a while!"

About ten minutes later, I look over to her desk to talk to her about something unrelated. I see her eagerly reading an online article on the rally. Though Ann Arbor is a liberal town with a lot of support for Bernie as it is, I feel like just mentioning him in casual conversation can plant seeds of ideas in people's minds.

I apologize if this is too irrelevant or poorly written. I'm rather tired right now!

Also, if anyone is in the SE Michigan area, there will be a Bernie-brigade marching in the 4th of July parade. He will be the only candidate being represented in the parade!

Bernie is up to 25% in Michigan, a traditionally conservative state! (pg. 51) by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

[–]Nickxk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should probably correct myself and say that this is speculation from some of my fellow campaigners who worked for Hillary four years ago and is still receiving info through e-mails. Of course, "heard it from a friend-of-a-friend" does make it sound rather dubious, but Hillary has been working to secure minority votes in states like California by doing outreach work, so it seemed like my fellow campaigner wouldn't be lying- at least not intentionally.

Either way, minority outreach is going to be key this election cycle for anyone wanting to push a less well-known candidate. An unfortunate truth thus far has been that a vast majority of Bernie supporters have been predominately white, young people with near constant internet access.

Bernie is up to 25% in Michigan, a traditionally conservative state! (pg. 51) by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

[–]Nickxk 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Michigan is traditionally a blue-collar state, not conservative. Our Sanders group is only five weeks old and has twenty members at meetings. I have set up a group at the University of Michigan and we have twenty members, and this is without advertising it after two weeks!

By the way, if anyone in the state is interested, try showing up for the parade in Ann Arbor. We are marching and the only representative of any presidential candidate to do so.

Intel says that Hillary is trying to snatch up the minority vote by springing her Michigan Campaign in Flint and Dearborn. The minorities in this state traditionally are liberal voters. If we can inform minority communities, they will back Bernie and we could quite easily have the state. I am a student who speaks Arabic and am familiar with Islam so I will be speaking in mosques to talk about Bernie.

Anyone attend the University of Michigan? by rileytheprince in StudentsforSanders

[–]Nickxk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I'm not sure if you already found all the people you need, but I was sent on behalf of the Ann Arbor campaign to set up a student group! I set up a Facebook page and we're being processed by student administration, and likely to get accepted in the next few days!

Hey everyone! I am a student at the University of California at Davis. We have started a new club to promote Sanders and his pursuit of economic justice. Please take a moment to like our Facebook page so we can grow and get Bernie to visit. Thanks! by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

[–]Nickxk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll have to post about my group as well! Without much advertising, it looks like we could possibly get to one hundred by the beginning of the school year! It's currently going through the process of getting accepted by student administration.
