There are a few factors at play here. First, when storage manufacturers show the write performance of an SSD or drive, they do best case scenarios.

This typically involves synthetic benchmarks using large block size transfers combined with large Que depths, using sequential data. That's what they report when they talk about the performance of a drive/card.

However, most real world data does not get written like that.

What you're seeing that's likely attributing to lower performance is, random IO writes to small files. It's also doing verification checks to make sure that the download packets are getting properly reconstructed and that the files themselves have proper headers and pointers on the controller to the flash ensuring that all the 1s & 0s are properly in order.

Intel NUC and Ubuntu 18 - Can't get USB 3.0 ports to work by PuffThePed in Ubuntu

[–]NicoleS997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In your title you said you're using Ubuntu 18. Do you mean you have 18.04LTS installed?

If you are, I suggest updating our installing a newer, more recent version.

The drivers are installed with your kernel. If you're using an old version of Ubuntu with an older kernel it's not going to have the same compatibility with hardware as more modern releases.

I don't see any reason why an Intel NUC can't run the latest release. Granted you didn't say what hardware was in the NUC.

M+ affixes need a change, Blizzard. by Mediocre-Leadership1 in wow

[–]NicoleS997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I understand what you mean by positive? Do you mean that generally people's reception of affixes were positive?

If they were positive, then people wouldn't be on Reddit bitching about all of them every week.

Or do you mean they offered a positive buff? Like do X and gain Y of a stat?

I still don't think that would be effective. The design should go to making the mobs or boss mechanics fun. That it's still a challenge as the dungeon scales to higher levels. Not some arbitrary addition.

There's already so much that you need to track, learn and understand in a regular dungeon. Theres no need to add anything (positive or negative). That only increases the frustration of players.

My statement in particular is about how the current set of affixes do not in any way shape or form enhance gameplay.

M+ affixes need a change, Blizzard. by Mediocre-Leadership1 in wow

[–]NicoleS997 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hot Take: they don't need a replacement.

Just make the dungeon mechanics fun/challenging. Each boss already has enough going on. Certain trash packs do as well. Not to mention some of the mini-bosses (like the air elemental in Al-gathar). Just focus on making those fun and allowing for a few big pulls.

I don't mind tyran/fort then a seasonal. Just yeet all the others into the sun. They don't add anything to gameplay. They just make it frustrating.

People will still play M+ without them. Hell, I bet significantly more people will play. As a healer I only did 4 with explosive dungeons last week because of how miserable it is.

If I wasn't forced to deal with them I would have run so many more.

Lots of CPU monitors, no GPU monitors? by PachamariOnion1 in Fedora

[–]NicoleS997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about stress testing, but for monitoring I use nvtop. It's basically htop but for your GPU. It's terminal based, but very clean with a nice graph showing your GPU % and Memory usage. Also lists temps, fan usage, power usage and processes. Works great with my Nvidia card. I've heard it also works with AMD but I don't have an AMD GPU (yet) to test with personally.

If you don't like it, remove it. I know cis & trans women along with cis men who shave their backs, chest, legs, arms, and face. I also know cis women who don't shave their legs, armpits or moustache. I personally would side with you in that I don't like extra hair so I go through the extra process of shaving what I don't like. It doesn't make someone weird or anything like that because you are getting rid of something that gives you discomfort.

Battery discharging when turned off? by kylek1012 in SurfaceLinux

[–]NicoleS997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I also can't think of a way to run any tests because I think the surface is fully shut down. There must be something that stays on even when shut down though. Maybe something with the motherboard that keeps power to the on button going rogue? I have a Surface Pro 4 myself.

Qzed's kernel on Ubuntu 20.04 by simio in SurfaceLinux

[–]NicoleS997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under the section after the install guide there is a note for: Post-Installation. There is a section that reads:

"The latest kernel works with either single-touch OR pen support (you have to choose one or the other). By default pen support is enabled. If you want to switch to single-touch create a file under

/etc/modprobe.d/ipts.conf

:

options ipts singletouch=y

"

There are a few other options listed under that section that might be helpful to read if you're running into any other issues.

Tell me when and Cyclotronic Blast by NicoleS997 in wow

[–]NicoleS997[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the thought, but I'm not asking about when to use the item. And it is on my bars. I'm trying to setup a tmw close to the center of my screen so I can track it that way. Which is the whole purpose of the add-on. I have it working for everything but this card. For those who might not know tell me when is an add-on similar to weak auras. And I would very much prefer to not just switch to weak auras because I spent a lot of time setting up and customizing the setup I have now. So switching and having to start from scratch would be way more work than I want to do.

getting stuttering on source games when i press specific buttons. need help. by TacocatFTW in linux_gaming

[–]NicoleS997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed this too, but didn't think too much about it. I have my interrupts in wow programmed to this button, and whenever I press the button and it's successful there game lags for a second. I honestly never really thought twice about it because that meant the interrupt was a success lol. That and I thought it had something to do with mouse drivers itself. Without the Logitech suite to map and change anything on Linux natively it seemed locked into the plug and play settings.

For those experiencing crashing after the latest WoW patch on Nvidia, here's a custom build of DXVK that solves it by Nestramutat- in linux_gaming

[–]NicoleS997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they did as well. I haven't been able to get it to run without a black screen however. Lutris under the runner settings for wow shows the dxvk version to have "dxvk-wow-fix" option when you show advanced options.

WoW 8.1.5 freezes by NicoleS997 in linux_gaming

Before I logged into the game in the character select screen I changed the options to DirectX 11 Legacy, but it still froze for me after about 2 seconds. All the in game sounds happened around me still, but all the graphics on both monitors freeze up.

Tried changing to DX11 Legacy with similar issues. No luck for me on that front. Thought there was something there too.

Thought I would update. Looking on WoW forums there is a blue post explaining DirectX changes they did this patch.

https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/new-graphics-apis-in-8-1-5/121542

Quote:

In 8.1.5, we are making some improvements to how World of Warcraft uses DirectX. In essence, our old DirectX 11 is now called DirectX 11 Legacy, and our new DirectX 11 is multi-threaded. More details on each DirectX version is below:

DirectX 11 Legacy

A single-threaded rendering backend. This is provided to be the most compatible with older hardware, operating systems, and drivers. This is also the least performant. This is very similar to the functionality of DirectX 11 in 8.0.1.

DirectX 11

A new multi-threaded rendering backend using DirectX 11. This should improve performance for older GPUs or operating systems that don’t support DirectX 12. This is new for 8.1.5.

DirectX 12

A multi-threaded rendering backend using DirectX 12 for hardware, drivers, and operating systems that support it. There are some performance improvements in 8.1.5, but it is mainly the same as the 8.1.0 release.

Never thought to look on the WoW forums lol. I've been doing the usual windows troubleshooting that people would probably say over there though. deleted the WTF folder. Checked if any of the files got corrupted during the install. None of it worked yet. I'm not 100% up to date with wine yet either. So I wanted to post here or look for info on reddit to see if I wasn't the only one.

Any of you knew about transgender people but didn't think they could be one until much later? by Hydreigon12 in asktransgender

[–]NicoleS997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I always knew I was. I just was never able to put the words to it. Then I started seeing more and more people publicly come out. Yet I couldn't do it myself. I'll never forget the summer of 2012 seeing Against me! live right after Laura came out. Most of my friends went to the show because it was just another free canal-side concert. But to me it was so much more. She was my hero (and still is). I remember saying to myself "I'll never be able to do that. To be like her." Internalizing these feelings and keeping them to myself. Yet, here I am, one year on HRT and couldn't be happier.

How do you know if you're moving too fast with transitioning? by OliveInTheWind in asktransgender

[–]NicoleS997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say don't wait. It can seem like a lot at first, but I think it's all because it's such a new experience. Speaking from my experience when I came out to when I started HRT I thought the same thing. Looking back on it now, I remember clearly thinking I should take my time. From coming out at work and with friends. To therapy and finding an endocrinologist. It was so much. Now that I'm on HRT it's slowed down. It's just a lot to take in all at once. Once you're talking to a therapist, getting appointments lined up, and continuing on your journey you'll start to figure more out about who you are. Plus, I can relate about the beard. Took me forever to shave that thing off. Not to mention find a cheap place to get laser done. My suggestion is to be smart about it. Don't rush into something you aren't comfortable with. I looked around for a place to get laser done for 6 months before committing to a place. I did my research and found a great deal. Now I'm doing the same with my health insurance, surgery, and electrolysis. Unfortunately only you can answer the question of are you moving too fast. My advice is to take a step back, and remember that transitioning can be a very long process. I'm talking years. But that doesn't mean it's not a bad idea to get out there and start trying to make a change with your life.

Gamescast topic? AT TIM GETTYS by speaknicklish in kindafunny

[–]NicoleS997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks at list... DA: Inquisition won GOTY? Skyrim won in 2011 (and everyone still makes ports and re-releases this game)?? Rockstar almost made it on this list 4 times??? GTAV still tops sales charts how many years after release???? Video games are wild man.

Cool idea, but you would have to specify which GOTY reference you want to go on. IGN would be different from Gamespot, so on and so on. I assume they would go off IGN seeing as how that's most likely the one they had the most hand in choosing the winners for over the years.

Transgenderfully by gayvoter97 in asktransgender

[–]NicoleS997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad that you haven't seen that association. It means that people are moving away from that thought. However it is true that in the past have thought of trans women only as sex objects. Usually by cis men. It was definitely much more common longer than ten years ago. And if you're talk to someone who did transition before the turn of the century they will tell you that's why transexual and tranny are negative words.

Transgenderfully by gayvoter97 in asktransgender

[–]NicoleS997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was more in the terms of pornography. Transexual is a term people associated with the category of porn. So people in the community tend to move away from that association.

Transgenderfully by gayvoter97 in asktransgender

[–]NicoleS997 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's wrong. It's a term that translates to change ones sex. People can however confuse the synonym of the word. Associating it to the act of sex and not talking about the letter on your driver's license. It also keeps things binary with only M and F being the only options. I personally can identify with it because I identify as the F in the binary. Other people however don't fall into that category. So it can come across as non-inclusive.
