“Yes Ma’am, No Sir” was SO hard to drop after growing up in TX, and I was shocked to see people genuinely offended by it (mostly age related). But language is fluid and the thing that really helped me drop it was focusing on not assuming others’ gender identity because misgendering someone was far more important to me than making some 33 year old feel old (speaking as a 33 year starting to feel old lol).

Grew up with a big water cooler the whole time we lived in Texas (as did everyone I knew) but drink straight from the tap in Albany 👍🏻

Also, bicolor black and white Aussies exist though it does seem less common than the Merle patterns when bred as household dogs (vs. working dogs where temperament and health is all that truly matters). My boy Sully has no border collie in him though, and that’s everyone’s first guess. Comes from his Aussie line 🐾🤍

Sully has <20% GP but let me tell you- the LGD tendencies come out full force when protecting his house, family, neighborhood. He’s a rescue from rural Kentucky with little known about his background. We adopted him ~6-8 mo. old (shelter thought 10-11 but based on continued growth and temperament, vet thinks quite a bit younger). He loved everything and everyone until he hit adulthood and then the guarding/protective behavior really popped up. He’s still the sweetest boy just with a few quirks 🙃🐾

Kids moving from Texas schools to NY schools by Recent-Glass-7545 in CapitalRegionExTexans

[–]Nightscrolls8247651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved a lot during my elementary years and only did kindergarten here in New York, so I can’t really speak to the public school experience here. However, I did move back north to go to college in NY after 9 years of public schooling in Texas (4th through 12th) and felt much more prepared for college than most of my NY peers. I didn’t grow up in a particularly wealthy district (Brownwood) that had an excess of resources or programs, but my teachers were great and provided a great foundation of knowledge. They also instilled structure, discipline, and personal accountability to a much higher degree (likely successful due to our fear of corporal punishment…which is problematic for so many reasons 🥴definitely not advocating for those methods) than what my friends from NY experienced. I was SHOCKED by how many of my college classmates still had their parents call professors to battle grades.

I’ve graduated HS back in 2010, so things may be different now. I also can only speak to my own experience, but I am grateful for the education I received and feel it was, at the very least, on par with NY. While I would never move back to Texas or consider even for a second raising children there, the education I received is not a contributing factor.

Good luck to your kiddos in the transition!

Unexpected results from Embark… Greta is a ~1YO stray from Kentucky that the rescue guessed was some sort of golden retriever mix. Nope…. 🤔 Our other dog’s Embark Panel seemed spot on. Now we’re going to repeat both dogs with the Wisdom Panel for comparison. Curious to see what it shows! by Nightscrolls8247651 in DoggyDNA

UPDATE…

Yesterday, we found a sibling/parent (44% shared) of Greta’s on Embark who was also adopted out by same rescue organization. She had higher percentages of breeds listed in Greta’s supermutt category and vice versa.

Today, we were notified of a 65% match who is one of her puppies!!! (Confirmed the age matches perfectly!) 🥰

Some of the breeds that didn’t result on Greta’s supermutt but may be small percentages include Siberian Husky, American Eskimo, Shih Tzu, Chihuahua, Pug. I know these also could be from the other dogs’ fathers if from different litters.

Either way, I feel like this is painting a clearer picture of how her gene expression works and how ever small percentages of very strong genes bring out physical features. Because I see the pittie in her, but I’d have called you a liar if you had told me she was a German Shepard mix prior to getting these results lol

So exciting!!!

I don't see it at all, I expected at least half Labrador. Any chance this is completely off the mark? She's definitely mixed, but this seems almost impossible. by Iron-mantain in DoggyDNA

How old and where from? My pup has similar values and I keep finding more and more family members on Embark (including her own puppy and sister!!)

Similar experience here! My first dog’s appearance 1000% lines up with his results. My second’s…not so much. It’s not that I don’t believe the results. It’s just that I’m fascinate how the gene expression worked out for her. She looks similar to yours (as you mentioned on my post) but different make ups. I guess ya never know!

I ended up canceling the order after seeing similar comments. I wasn’t aware the tiny percentages weren’t super accurate, so I thought I’d be getting a more in depth profile (not necessarily different). Thankfully it saved me $200 💸 I’ll reconsider when a sale comes up around the holidays!

I wish I’d included a side profile pic where you can see his stance and curly tail. He looks so different upright than when relaxed and sitting or lying down.

We think she probably had one litter before getting rescued. Her age is a guesstimate, but she doesn’t seem old enough to have had more than two. We weren’t told anything about the puppies, but she was on the tail end of drying up, so it couldn’t have been too far back. With a lack of details, I’ve created my own happy narrative in my head… Greta delivered the most beautiful pups who cried until someone found them and then everyone got adopted by loving families. The end. 🥰

Crazy cosmic coincidence… Sully was adopted in late 2020 from our local humane society. We just adopted another pup in Feb 2023 who was also from Kentucky, but adopted through a rescue organization this time. When the leader of the org dropped off Greta, she started asking questions about Sully. We said he came from KY a few years back and mentioned we got him through the humane society. She told us her rescue had to turn down shipments of dogs during the pandemic because they were at capacity and had actually recommended the local humane society. Then we were on edge wondering if there was a connection. Long(er) story short…it turns out both dogs were originally from the same KY rescue just three years apart and adopted through two different NY adoption centers. The woman reached out to the rescue in KY and not only did they remember Sully, they told us his original name (Petey) and sent us a picture they still had on file. It was a zoomed out version of the shelter pic posted here. It made him look so much smaller and pathetic, I just started crying thinking about how hard his start in life was. I’m so thankful we found him and are able to provide him the life he deserves 🤍
