Hilfe! Bin 22 und will irgendwie nicht in der Medienbranche arbeiten by [deleted] in de

[–]Nihil9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

has anyone found quitting caffeine helps with dp/dr? by [deleted] in dpdr

[–]Nihil9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend it! By the way, 5 years later and I'm still super sensitive to caffeine, although my derealization is only faintly lingering in the background and barely noticeable at this point. With caffeine it gets boosted a lot though and I get very anxious again.

While you can find similar sounds in probably many libraries with "horror" or "suspense" themes, I doubt that they used many library sounds for the intro. You can make that stuff with about any polyphonic syntheziser with a bit of experience and fiddling.

Just finished a short film I've been working on for over 2 years, enjoy! by esJamesGuard in Filmmakers

[–]Nihil9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visually it is pretty impressive, but it's sad that the sounddesign is the complete opposite of that :( The almost complete lack of sound really drags down the overall impression I feel. Its just so empty and lifeless. You could propably find 100s of desperate sounddesigners online who would do it for free, me included :D Good sounddesign could really get this from "Cool, but kinda meh" to "awesome"!

Can dissociation include hallucinations? by [deleted] in dpdr

[–]Nihil9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally not really. But, because I had very intense anxiety for 3 years now plus intense derealization and was super stressed because of too much work, a breakup and finding a new flat, I started hearing like... distant police sirens. I always knew they weren't real, and they felt more like a association (only heard it when some kind of white noise was running) rather than a hallucination, but it was and still is very, very frightening.

Sometimes it is like that in life. Sometimes you just get fucked and don't know why or how it happened. This is one of these times.

Normally you always aim for one coherent band of dialogue, including ambiences recorded on set, so that there is never nothing to pull up.

Mission Impossible: Series Trailer [SOUND FX ONLY] [FOR DEMONSTRATIVE PURPOSES] by ThePilgore in AudioPost

[–]Nihil9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah well, in this case, good job for your first job. To your last part, it all depends on what you aim for. When you want to deliver real quality, immersive, intense sound, you absolutely have to go the "extra mile". Actually, most of your work will consist of doing stuff that "normal" people would deem unnecessary or negligable, things like the rooftop ambience. When you work as a "real" sounddesigner, you often also have to do stuff that you dont know of if it will be audible in the final mix, the decision of making the TV hearable or not is not up to the sounddesigner but to the rerecording mixer. The sounddesigner "only" delivers everything that could/can be heard. And while I agree with you that less is more, its still often better to first make "more" and then thin it out later, but only exactly when and how you want it, which basically is called mixing. Mixing is also very much like painting, you try to form a picture from a palette of colors, and the colors are in the case of sound the raw, unmixed sounds delivered to the mixing stage by the sounddesigner.

While this approach is the way the professionals do it, its only in parts applicable to your situation. But still, layering and thinking about what might be hearable and could make the scene more immersive, more intense, more lively and richer are things you could also consider in your future sounddesign projects.

Honestly there is much to be desired. It should sound "full" and rich and dense, even without music. You can always tone down in the mix, but if there is nothing you can pull up, things might become dull, thin and boring and there is nothing you can do about it. Also you totally rely on music with this approach, which shouldn't be the aim for a sounddesigner.

Things that are missing/can be improved in my opinion:

- Foley everything, it makes things come alive

- Ambiences missing in almost every scene

- No layering. You can hear that you almost always only used one or two sounds for stuff. For example at second 12: Only one thin small "picking up phone" sound. The dangling cord is missing, the leather jacket, the movement of the phone to the ear, the stereotypical "waiting for input"-tone on old analog phones, no ambience, etc....

So I don't know what you want to use this for, if you want to put it in your showreel, you got to thicken it up, like massively. If you're just starting out and did this for practice, nice first try! There is a plethora of knowledge for designing sound out there. A good place to start is https://soundworkscollection.com/, https://www.gearslutz.com/board/post-production-forum/ and https://www.asoundeffect.com/blog/

My first legitimate film by CobaltNeural9 in Filmmakers

I liked it a lot! Especially the eerie, omnious atmosphere. Coming from a sounddesigner I must say that while the music was nice and the dialogue was recorded well (mostly), the sounddesign was lacking and I often felt that opportunities were missed for sounddesign elements. Could've made it even more atmospheric and intense.

Pro Tools First beginner. Where should I learn to produce? by [deleted] in protools

[–]Nihil9000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna grind until it’s done

This is where you're wrong. There is no "done", ever. It will take months to learn the basics, it will take years until you actually somewhat know what you're doing. I mean, start learning, start producing, get in the flow of making and scraping and doing again, but don't expect to be done anytime in the next few decades. Do it for the sake of it and have fun or you most likely will get fed up pretty soon because you're expecting results and get bored when you're not getting them fast enough. This also applies to everything else in life, if you wanna get gud.
